this was OUR BOAT!!! We sold her around 2011 or so, to a person who wanted to race her, in Folsom Lake, I believe. Looking at the video, she's the same even down to the pillows in the v-berth, which my wife made. The picture in the salon is a photo of Tarbert Harbor in the Hebrides, and your dinette table, I made as the original was just cheap plywood. I also added the heavy duty dogs which hold the table to the cabin. We had a VHF, full cruising lights for sailing at night or anchoring, and that mess of wiring is definitely NOT ours! We did all the wiring with marine grade connections, protected by heat shrink over the connections. Originally from Antelope, we even cruised her in the San Juans one August, leaving from Anacortes. We moved to high in the Cascades, and sailing in some of the lakes here, because of the steep-sided mountain surrounding them, makes them subject to high winds. We miss her, but it looks like she's doing a good job for you. She's a wonderful little boat!!

This is so awesome haha. Love seeing comments like these. One time we ran into my mom's old car. The guy we sold it to lied to the new owner and said a new motor was put in it. He popped the hood open and my father (a mechanic) knew it was the same engine from when we had it. But it was nice seeing the car again a few years later. Can't imagine seeing it on KZfaq though! Haha

This is probably one of the best videos I’ve ever seen for a “boat tour.” A lot of us cruise KZfaq watching model specific videos, hoping to pick up one or two tidbits of info out of dozens (if there are dozens) of 5-10 min videos. This one video topped all of that in one place. Thank you for going through the effort of making it.

Juan, my name is Jose. I live in South Florida. I just started to see your video about the Catalina 22 Sailboat. My spouse and I just came back from visiting my elderly Mom in Pensacola. While we were there my brother-in-law happened to have a Catalina 22 in his commercial warehouse and showed it to me. He said he takes it out, from time to time, out in the Perdido Key area, where the water is nice and calm. He mentioned that if I was interested, he would get it ready for next summer and that my spouse and I could go sailing with him and my sister (his wife). It's a long story but I have always been fascinated by sailboats! So here I am, learning all about your boat, which looks just like his. I like the way you present yourself (down to earth) and the way you take the time to mention important things about boating. I continue to watch your videos and maybe experience sailing next summer. So happy to find you and your videos Juan! Thank you! Joe.

We had a Catalina 27 and we had it at the time in Channel Islands. My dad and I raced sailboats and dad sold his Clipper 21 for the Catalina. The Clipper 21 is similar to the Cat22 with the retractable keel. Anyway one day we came back into Port after a race and there in front of the yacht club was the first ever Catalina 30. It was a bit beat up from testing and my dad inquired about it and eventually bought it. Well Butler took the boat back to the factory in Canoga Park and completely refurbished it for us and then my dad put a bow sprit on her and stepped the mast to the keel and added 10 feet to the length for racing. The boat had no interior as it was number one. They build these in three pieces, hull, deck and interior. Well the interior mold was not done and Butler wanted to get it into the boat show so he slapped the deck on it and locked it so no one could get inside. After that he used it for weight and balance testing for the interior design and thats how we came to buy it with no interior. The boat sat about a foot above the waterline because it was so light and our racing handicap was so extreme do to that it was hard to win a race even when we finished first. Anyway, we named the 27 Fury and the 30 was named Rage. If you ever see a Cat 30 named Rage it is number 1 and was my dads boat.

Oh Juan, this brings back memories. My folks had one built in 1982; Dad had bought a Sunfish in 1979 & lo & behold Mom loved it so much 6 weeks later they bought a used 22'. 3 yrs later they had one custom-built. Sailed every weekend they could down in Oklahoma. Dad died in '85, Mom tried on her own but it was hard (memories, not lack of sailors or ability) & sold it in '87. VERY FUN BOAT! Enjoy!

I’m a retired professional “soldier” not sailor, but I have sailed for decades and still don’t know all the terminology… I’ve been picked on by MANY that know all the terms and have been accused of “not knowing how to sail” simply because I don’t talk the language… but not by anyone who has ever sailed with me! Great video, I enjoyed every minute of it! Was like someone giving me a tour of my own boat! Thanks for sharing!

We used our keel lock bolt on our Venture 21 for safety but the real joy was being able to loosen the tension on the cable-suddenly the harmonics generated by the vibration and magnified by the sound box of the hull would disappear! You couldn't tell how fast you were going by the pitch anymore but you could hear everything else. I don't remember exactly how long it took us to figure that one out but I do remember we wished we had done it from the beginning! "Unsinkable", the Venture 21 was filled with foam blocks under all the berths. Three small kids and a hyper vigilant mother and that was the deciding factor. Great family memories in the early 70's; and, great respect for things that pinch and the unforgiving hardness of stainless steel should you slip and slide a body part into a winch or cleat !

First of all, good job with the video. Very informative. As a Catalina 22 owner, one can appreciate the detail provided in your video. I wanted to touch on the subject of the keel bolt. The keel bolt isn’t to “lock the keel” in place, rather to act as a friction brake in the event of grounding or hitting obstacles in the water so as to not damage the keel trunk; essentially to slow the boat down in a controlled manner. There is a common misconception with the keel bolt and it’s purpose. The Macgregor Venture had a keel bolt design that went through the head of the keel. The through bolt was specifically chosen to bend or break in the event of an underwater collision, which could easily be replaced. Beefing up or changing the design of the keel bolt on the Catalina 22 would be contradictory to the design plan; which if changed could result in damaging the keel trunk (thin fiberglass) to a point which could result in loss of the vessel or keel. Just some food for thought. See below for some interesting references regarding the subject. thisoldsailboat.files.wordpress.com/2015/12/why-your-swing-keel-lock-bolt-wont-save-you-in-a-knockdown.pdf www.google.com/amp/s/stingysailor.com/2015/11/07/why-your-swing-keel-lock-bolt-wont-save-you-in-a-knockdown-2/amp/

Steve Reeves sandals 😂 Blanco "Hercules" Lirio I was fortunate enough to have a Dad who wanted to sail. Built a sailboat (big sailboard really) It had a main and a job, so all the opportunities for learning were there. As far as terminology, I never sweated that much. I can sail away from the dock and return without a powerplant. If I had gone to some sailing school I probably would have left before the class was finished. But any time the wind was up, I was out in the whitecaps. I love sailing and flying. It's so elemental! I appreciate your informative videos. Thanks for the work you put into them.

This made me nostaligic. In the late 1970's, I had a 1974 fixed keel Catalina 22 in Seattle. We didn't have the popup; we did have the sliding galley (which was more or less useless--when you had stuff in it, it became too heavy to slide). Loved that boat. Her name was At Last and I sailed her all over Lake Washington and the Sound out of Seattle. Had her up to the San Juan Islands. She was my first keel boat and I cried the day I sold her.

When I was in high school (and long after) my band director had one just like yours, except his was at least five years older. He took all of us out on it during our end of the year party at Lake Oroville's Loafer Creek. We had to go in shifts of three or four, but it sure was fun. It was so relaxing to be racing across the water *silently*. Prior to that I had only been on motorized boats, so the quiet was a treat to me. I hadn't realized the cabins on these boats are so spacious! The ice chest mod is fabulous! I can't wait to see more.

I have to say, that was a very good purchase. You're dead right about electrical systems on boats. They do have a tendency to look exactly like yours, but on a boat like that, you can probably live without it, in this day and age, but it might make a good project for winter. It would certainly make the boat more liveable for a couple of days out. Only poor sailors drink warm beer! One thing that I noticed was your through hulls. You might want to consider replacing those along with the hose work and double clamp them with quality marine grade clamps. These are potential points of failure with potentially life ending consequences. You might also consider having some tapered dowls onboard within easy reach with which you can plug holes in the unlikely event of a disaster. And one last thing. Trailer wheel bearings and electricals. Once again, great purchase. Get the family out for a few weekends over summer and its paid for itself at the price you got her for. Enjoy her, I'm envious.

I lived in Rancho Cordova in 1960 and did my first cabin sailing on someone else's Catalina 22 at Folsom Lake. After moving to southern Ca the 1970's I wanted to move to a larger boat, which at the time was the Catalina 30 which became one of the most important sailboats of all time. It had a gas powered auxiliary eng was well laid out, and with a little effort would sleep 4. Its real popularity was the fact that it could be berthed in a 30 ft slip which was the least expensive slip rental for an ocean sailboat and many thousands were sold for this reason alone, Catalina had built a 27 but the 30 fit in the same slip as a 27 and provided more room and greater flexibility, great fun...but those days are over.

The kitchenette went in what you called the quarter birth. I agree with the bad wireing. Its why many boats burn. Catalina didnt make replacing the wireing easy either, but every boat has its issues. Also, a twin air mattress fits perfectly over the dinette. I keep my air matress, pillow, sheets and large beach towels in a laundry vacuum laundry bag. Then if i need my towels for a blanket i have them or there are always towels if needed.

1975 Catalina 22 swing keel no pop top. First boat I ever owned. Bought her with my first commission check from Pioneer at the age of 18. You know a couple guys/couples sailed a group of them from Texas down to Guatemala and then off to the Caymens returning to Key West about a decade ago. There was a write up about them going and returning but then the follow up story never materialized. Basically they said the sailing was easy it you watched for the weather windows and sailed to the boats near limits not yours. Controversy with the visit to Cuba I think kept the whole article out of print. Search youtube and you can find two video interviews.

Sailing is great fun and intellectual stimulation for young minds; as you have to process many variables continually to safely and effectively captain a sailing vessel. I used to sail a 30' Newport, in fact when I was 13 and my friend was 15 we sailed that boat by ourselves from Marina del Rey to the Isthmus at Catalina and back under full spinnaker for a 3 day coming of age weekend. We were lucky to have parents that trusted us enough to go on such an adventure, but I think they saw that it would build character and self reliance that would serve us well throughout our lives. You got a good deal on that vessel. Keep some marine epoxy and fiberglass material on board if you go on any extended trips. You are so right about sleeping on a boat, it is one of the real luxuries of owning one! Enjoy.

The Mac has a 90 hp Etec and the only time the sails have been up is when the dealer showed me how to raise them. My kids found out the Mac would pull a tube and for them, that's all we needed. Kids are grown now and I'm looking forward to the next video. Maybe you can convince me to have a go at those sails. PS Time to downsize the fleet, spend too much time on maintenance.

Excellent overview of the Catalina 22. Nice example here given its likely age. It's more of a coastal pocket cruiser than a lake boat with that heavy swing-keel and no mast lowering system. Polish lake boats have some ballast in the bilge, plus a much lighter swing centreboard, drawing a foot of water when up. They also have an A-frame at the bow, which allows the mast and furled headsail to be lowered or raised in minutes under way using a winch at the cockpit. More ocean-going versons have a stub keel and swing centreboard, drawing perhaps a foot and a half when up (somebody sailed a TES 22 footer across the Atlantic a few years ago). I'm surprised that Polish-style lake sailboats have not caught on in a bigger way; the Macgregor sailboats of some years ago were much less substantial than the Polish ones. That style of trailer sailboat certainly opens up many lakes and rivers, allowing easy passage in shallow passages beneath low bridges between sailing areas, e.g. the finger lakes of Ontario and New York state. The Canadian equivalent of the Catalina 22 is the Shark, a 24 footer, which also is extensively raced and has also crossed oceans, but it has a fixed keel.

Just watched this after viewing the 'exterior' vid & loved it, Juan. I just knew you were gonna say "atrocious" too (electr wires) lol. Glad to see you all enjoying sailing time when possible. Cheers!

Juan, you triggered a lot of memories. 45 years ago I was shopping for a trailer sailer, and the Catalina 22 was at the top of my list. Financial limitations placed me in a South Coast 22 instead. It wasn't a bad boat, but I really would have preferred the Catalina.

Great tour! Glad I stumbled upon this. Would love to master one of these things but I'm afraid my starter would have to be a Sunfish.

Nice tour, brings back memories of my 1984 C22. One item.. under the seat on the starboard side, you said an option for a sink. Well, there was a whole slide-out sink and stove that slid back under the cockpit seat. It rode in the tracks you see there. I don't know if many of those things survived the years. I had one it was beat to crap. thought I'd rebuild it but never got to that project. Rats nest wiring. I re-wired the whole boat with marine wire. I was never happy with the sloppiness of the behind-the-wall finishing of the fiber glass. The swing keel was a project.. watch out for the pivot hole.... ALL of the 550 lbs of the keel is riding on that hole. I had it welded and reinforced with nickel.. You'd have a really bad day if that broke and fell under your boat while underway. However, it was a great starter boat.. learned about boat repair... sold it and bought a new Hunter 36.... I now want a 43; Center console..with bow thrusters..... if you get the bug it never ends.

Congrats on a great new project, Juan. I live in Portland and charter sailboats up in the San Juan Islands. You are correct in saying that there is a feeling of freedom and bliss that can only come from sailing. I'm headed to the Islands again next week.

Sleeping on a boat is the best. Just got off the boat after 7 days on the water... I slept like crap last night! I miss that gentle bobbing and swaying (or not so gentle in the case of the squall that blew through friday night).

Though I'm watching this video nearly 4 years later, it's a great video, and you're do quite well with the jargon. I almost bought one for $2500 to be used while my 35 footer boat is being rebutted for ocean sailing, but decided against it. No simulator for sailboats, so the only was to stay current is by sailing. The Catalina 22 is the most produced sailboat, survives today as the Capri model, and the best part is that factory parts are still produced. And yes, the swing keel model is the most popular. Nice boat for a family like your.

Looks wonderful! The most "Gently Used" 1980 Model Ive seen yet! They probably took it out once every Summer month and thats it! A great NERDY SUGGESTION on the Swing Keel: Clamp a small piece of flexible sheet metal to the top of the cable and one near the bottom. Paint one Neon RED and one Neon GREEN. Drill a 1 inch hole through the backboard, and now you have an "UP" or "DOWN" Indicator! Probably worth every bit of time it would take to make this! Best Wishes from San Diego!

My father once owned a 22' trailer sailer. It was the same design as 'The Dove' apparently. It had a twin cylinder Yanmar Deisel in it, and twin keels.

Another great video, thanks! You are a really interesting guy -- planes, motorcycles, boats, hiking, spillways, nice family and cute kids, etc. What's next? But still can't believe you filled in your pool. My old house had a pool and I sure do miss jumping in after gardening.

Being a bit of a 'sailing nerd'---as it were---I want to congratulate you. Albeit not perfect; your use of the nomenclature was just fine. With that said I must admit you produced and excellent video. Very well done! Looking forward to the next video.
