T hanks for getting bit up for us... I enjoyed the vid! I'm about to pick up an 84 250 xls.. with 4700 original miles. I love these ole honda xl bikes. Unmatchable when it comes to trail riding down the gravel roads and creeks to unwind!

this was my first bike when i was 15.. was yellow (painted over the red).. had tons of fun on it ripping in the dirt... untill it broke down cause of tough handeling (and it was tired anyways... i always used to pull away full throttle letting the clutch go and hang on... it would make burnouts in the grass in 4th gear... with offroad tires on (the real ones).

I put 27k street miles on an xl 250s from 1981 to 1987. Bored cylinder, Wiesco piston , Super Trapp. Haven't thought about in a long time. Loved that bike. Front end is very heavy though. Fork seals pop easy if trail ridden too hard.

Nice bike! I have two of these. One has 2800 miles on it and the other I just put over 10,000 miles on it in one year. It now has 16, 000 miles. I’ve been looking for one of those luggage racks! Very cool that yours has one. I’m rebuilding one of mine, the 16K mile one, and I’ll be riding this bike across the US next summer so I’ll be putting another 6-8 thousand miles on it. They’re great bikes. And you can ride nice wheelies on them too. Trust me!

I think we just became friends lol 😂! My buddy liked this one so much he found a XL500S and talk about wheelies! That bike is fun too! I still ride this and also have two of these. This one has 5K miles now…I’m not able to ride that much per year but wow sounds like a blast! I may actually sell this not sure yet!

@@JerryJrsGarage Haha! Yup these are great bikes. My buddy, that owns our local Honda dealership, tells me all the time how people come in and asks if he knows of any XL 250s for sale. They always say, you know, the one with a 23 inch front wheel. He always thinks of me but knows I will never sell. I paid 400 bucks for both bikes and I’ve been offered between 2500 and 3000 apiece. I prefer my vintage bikes. Way more comfortable.

Yup. In the 60s Honda set the bar very very high they pushed engineering and they made great bikes instead of worrying about profit and the innovative the entire industry, from the mid 60s to the late 80s everybody was chasing them and they were some other great bikes but Honda set the standard for quality and performance and production and these are incredible Bikes even by today’s standards they’re incredibly tough for a young. My dream bike or my favorite bike would be a 1984 Honda XL 350 come at the disco break in front and if it had an electric start added on that’s all I want. But Honda just made them incredible tough they last forever they’re easy to work on easy to ride performance is good and there’s nothing really horrible on them. Most bikes have kind of a weak spot on it these were just very good all the way around good power good performance and super easy to ride. And these particular years the late 70s early 80s with that double pumper carb on it or some of the easiest kickstart bikes to start. These things if kept in even halfway decent condition almost always start first kick second if it’s really cold. You’re just awesome Bikes. People of been driving these for 40 years abuse them and they just start super easy run all day and are tough as nails. These bikes can put 60 or 80,000 miles on them easily and once you’re on it you’ve got pretty much a lifetime of fun. Boots are in the geared set up exactly right to be what it is, A dual purpose it’s basically a dirt bike it’s capable off-road it’s secured a little more mild and has a nice wide power band which makes it is one of the great dual purpose bike it’s good on the street it’s good off-road and does everything well. This 40 year old bike is as good as any other 250 dual sport out there minus the electric starter

Hello Jerry, I just bought the exact same bike (1980 Honda XL250S). I have always wanted one of these. Mine is really nice too. I wish mine had the rack. I’m looking for a rack now but I’m having trouble finding one. Please let me know if you find anymore information about your rack. I know you thought it was a factory Honda accessory. If you see one please reach out to me. Thank You, Greg

Greg Walsh hey greg, regarding the back carry bar. Its going to be hard because of the age of the bike. I recommend trying making one yourself. Or find one similar and modifying it. Good luck with your search.

Hey! Just bought a beautiful 1979 xl185s, been working on fixing it up but I'm stuck because I can't get the gears to shift. Any tips??
@TourSauceWA
@TourSauceWA 5 жыл бұрын
I've pulled on the casings but am beginning to think it's the transmission. Nt sure you're an expert on that but if I could get some advice that would be awesome! I can provide pictures etc.
@JerryJrsGarage
@JerryJrsGarage 5 жыл бұрын
Matt Stief Well I am not a very good mechanic to be honest and in that model I have no real experience although it is possible the trans sounds like has an issue. If you get the cases split and find trans issues you can always rebuild it much stronger. Try inspecting the clutch side first and hopefully it is minor and maybe something is just jammed in there.
@TourSauceWA
@TourSauceWA 5 жыл бұрын
Checked clutch side and got the clutch basket off- no damage. I'm thinking about it having to be an issue of the transmission. Any tips on a how to go about rebuilding the transmission? I also can't seem to get the star drive on the clutch side to catch and engage gears.
@JerryJrsGarage
@JerryJrsGarage 5 жыл бұрын
Matt Stief well the starter drive gear is the first thing I would look into next just for the simple fact that maybe that’s you’re issue right there maybe the starter is froze up maybe that starter gear his shot or the one-way bearing attach to whatever it is the flywheel I’m not really sure on that specific bike. I would think if you’re really into the bike it probably would be worth fixing but whenever you do the transmission just read the manual carefully because the first time I ever split cases I forgot to washer on reassembly And I was missing fifth and six gear that was on 250R though so yeah lol I am not always the best tech out there.

I just bought one and I noticed a lot of the other people in this comment section also own these. Can any of you please help me out with the front tire, so far I have only found one option (Bridgestone trailwing tw9). Are there any others. The front tire on the bike in this video doesn’t seem to have the same tread pattern as the trailwing so I’m guessing there are other options. And if the trailwing is my only option, what should I pair it with for the rear?

I’m not sure because I have never once attempted to order tires. Considering parting this bike out now that I’ve put a ton of miles on it.

lakings231 Well my other 80’ XL250 will go 80+mph the speedometer gets buried downhill. Easy 75mph cruising speed with a chinese carb and a Super Trapp Exhaust fresh top end. I think has larger rear sprocket? That may be why...this one rips it pretty good down the road.
