Codex* bumped Genuine Risk in the Preakness, leaving it potentially in doubt as to whether or not he would have beaten her had that not happened, and she proceeded to beat him in the Belmont, so I don't see how you can claim with absolute certainty that he was much superior to her. He was talented, but so was she.

and Cordero said, "I knew if I hit the "bitch" she would slow, hang back, can't remember exact quote, but it's another video, if it's still here. The woman who approached Cordero her name used here is or was Genuine Risk2 I think. and BTW jesusisnotallright, GR wld've won if not bumped, Cordero drifted out fm the rail, on the rail, in the lead, no ground to catch up. And what does he do, he saw GR coming up on outside, just the way she won the KD. AND she came up between 2 lead horses in Belmont in the slop and came in SECOND. She didn't win, but point she is she was right up front. AND Codex came in 8th in Belmont. Jack Whitaker said after race, the REAL story of this year's Triple Crown is GR, the only filly ever to run in and PLACE in ALL 3 TC races.

bon1042 While I personally do think Cordero deliberately interfered with Genuine Risk in the Preakness and that Codex should have been disqualified, we can't really take the unverified claim of a random KZfaqr (and one with a name that implies bias) as absolute proof of Cordero's guilt. They could be lying, trolling, mistaken etc. That said, I do personally think Cordero is an extremely dirty rider, and he's been reported to be a bully as well, intimidating or taunting rival jockeys before races in an attempt to make them ride poorly.
@bon-jb4sk

I believe her. I understand, but your thinking drives me to frustration, to love GR and use her name +2 doesn't mean she didn't talk to Cordero and ask him about this. I can't imagine her making up" I knew if I hit the "bitch" etc. It is so outrageous and such a portrayal of his weak macho ego (super so with Latino and Italian men) for him to utter that word, demonstrates shattering of his ego when a filly won the KD and then came up on the outside just like she did in KD to possibly pull it off again was too much for him. He so clearly drifted way out fm the rail, fm being first, on the rail with no ground to make up, best place to be and then drift way out. Jockey Vasquez, the Firestones filed complaint. Vasquez also said he hit her with his whip she had a welt over her left eye. Listen to Arcaro and Cosell here on video. Arcaro thought he shld be disqualified. What more do you want??? Every person on YTube doesn't have to be a generalized random with bias, a liar, a troll, mistaken. Was she "mistaken" when she asked him and he responded the way he did. I'm a mature, honest person who never had much patience with denial, close mindedness etc. I understand what you say and it is true, but to almost dismiss GR2's story because it's on YTube and thus can't be the truth is so frustrating.

I picked Genuine Risk to win, probably mostly sentimental. But it sure was a thrill to see her deliver! What most people don't realize is that fillies against colts usually are successful by running on the lead early, then try to hold off the males (remember Winning Colors). But Genuine Risk (and Zenyatta) ran from behind. She took it to the field the hard way. Taking the bumps, running wider and losing ground, then finally grinding through with guts and heart to go past everyone. Class act all the way, Genuine Risk!!!

going to the post she was really strutting, looking lovely. "There will be a large price on her, but there really is NO price on her. There is absolutely No chance that this filly wld ever be sold..." "They love her..." That's nice. That Preakness..... then just think, in slop she came up right between 2 colts leading in the Belmont and came in second, placing in all 3 TC races. As Jack Whittaker said after the Belmont, "but the real story of this year's TC race is Genuine Risk."

The closest a filly came to winning the Triple Crown. A 1st in the Derby, 2nd in the Preakness (I was 11 during the 1980 spring racing and I was mad!) and 2nd in the Belmont. I fell in love with 43 years ago today because she proved girls could do anything! I miss her. Run free, Genny!!

Amazing to see this again. I sat with Leroy Jolley on Derby day and I can say that he could hardly believe it after she won. He just sauntered down to the Winners Circle and the filly was coming out when we got there. The state police didn’t recognize him and almost didn’t let him on the winners stand.

My best friend and I were screaming so loudly at the end of this race, two of my macho neighbors broke down my door to "save" us! (I refused to let them pay the locksmith.) When we shrieked again at GR's clearly bring fouled - IMO - in the Preakness, they again ran over, but only knocked and yelled that time.

Heh, maybe you'd be better off screaming words (e.g. "Yeah!") as opposed to just flat-out screaming. If you scream a word people might realize you're watching/listening to a sporting event (males frequently scream words for the same reason). If you just scream however people might think you're being murdered instead.

*+VialliForever* Well, my friend *was* screaming "Run you b*tch, run!" and I was screaming "Go, GOOO!" but this was probably interpreted as being commands directed at each other to flee from someone! Maybe another time, "Yeah!" *would* be the way to go! Heat of the moment. . . .

Susan Ouimette I can't say I blame you. Genuine Risk was truly great in this performance, especially considering that Rumbo was really flying towards the end. I'd have really loved it if she'd won the TC. I hope a filly manages it one day, or at least wins more than one of the TC races. Rachel Alexandra could have possibly won the Derby as well as the Preakness if she'd been entered for it, but she'd have never managed the Belmont. Genuine Risk was one of very few fillies with the endurance, speed and durability to have a chance at all three.
@AZdoberwoman
@AZdoberwoman 9 жыл бұрын
*+VialliForever* Given the new eligibility requirements for entering the Kentucky Derby, we're likely to see even fewer fillies run in it - *very* likely, several columnists have opined. If Zenyatta hadn't been as slow to mature as she was, who knows? Mike Smith said she still had a gear to spare in the '09 Breeder's Cup; maybe given a mile and a half, she would have shown us something special. I'm "glad," in a sense, that Genuine Risk was beaten fairly in the Belmont, as, if she'd won that race, her quite likely having been denied the Preakness -hence the Triple Crown - per what I saw as an obvious foul would have been a much more bitter pill to swallow.
@VialliForever
@VialliForever 9 жыл бұрын
Susan Ouimette I strongly disagree with the alterations made towards eligibility for the Derby. The old system functioned for many years, it should have just been left how it was. But if they ARE going to change it, then I think they should make similar changes to the Kentucky Oaks, and have a 'points system' put into place for that race too. Then make it so that any race that gives points towards the Kentucky Derby also gives points towards the Kentucky Oaks. That way any filly who competes in the unisex races and does well will gain points towards BOTH the Derby and the Oaks. That way, she will have the option of going into either the Oaks or the Derby, depending on which her owners feel is best suited for her. That will prevent fillies from being forced to choose between the Oaks and the Derby, and allow their owners to be under less pressure, as if they decide at the last moment that they don't want to send their filly to the Derby, then she will have still gained points to allow her to enter the Oaks instead.

I believe that Genuine Risk is the closest thing we've had to a female Secretariat. She was, like he was, the very definition of magnificent. Other fillies (like the much-praised Ruffian) may have been superior in one or two areas (e.g. sheer speed) but I cannot think of another filly that is/was as versatile as Genuine Risk. She was capable of just about everything. She could run on fast tracks (e.g. her Derby and Preakness performances), on sloppy tracks (e.g. her Belmont performance), at short(ish) distances (e.g. a mile and an eighth, like here), at longer distances (e.g. the mile and a half Belmont), she was durable (she had no health conditions, fractures or injuries throughout her entire life, other than one wounded leg from a freak accident that could have happened to any horse), she had immense endurance, she was brave (determinedly kept running even when the much larger Codex collided with her in the Preakness) and she had great speed (not exceptional, but she was faster than many top colts and fillies). Add that all up and we have quite possibly the greatest female racehorse of all time. Ruffian? Wasn't durable and never won against colts. Rachel Alexandra? Had distance limitations (she'd have never managed the Belmont, for example). Zenyatta? Had issues with certain types of tracks. They (and many other fillies that I've not mentioned) may have been superior to Genuine Risk in one or two areas (Ruffian and Rachel Alexandra were both front-running speed-horses and Zenyatta, being a giant, has an immense stride that enabled her to cover huge amounts of ground very quickly), but in terms of overall strengths I think that Genuine Risk was above them all.

*+VialliForever* I learned just recently that she had a foal by Secretariat that was stillborn. The fates can be so cruel. What if . . .
@VialliForever
@VialliForever 10 жыл бұрын
Susan Ouimette Yes, she did. She had fertility problems throughout her whole life unfortunately, and produced only two living foals. Neither of them ever raced. It's a shame, not only because she was a great racehorse but also because her owners were very ambitious and had great plans for her. They had planned to send her to some of the best stallions, first to Secretariat and then second to Nijinsky II (who won the English Triple Crown), and then probably onto other popular sires, but it didn't work out because of her constant failures to conceive and miscarriages.

Ruffian is the greatest of all time instead of best female. She didn't need to beat a colt since she beat Secretariat and Man O' Wars record and was quoted by Secretariat's trainer himself that she was better. By the way she never lost at all. She set records in all her starts. She won the filly triple crown. She ran on serious injuries and still won against good horses like Hot N Nasty! Unlike this filly Ruffian had real competition. These horses are weak and she lost more then once as well and never did beat good horses or set records either. Ruffian would kill her anyway. Ruffian destroyed her times in a mile and Ruffian only ran once going a mile and it was the Acorn that she won by 13 and half lengths. Then again Ruffian ran once going 1 1/8 and won by 13 lengths as well and took that record and Genuine Risk can't get even a second to it and she ran that distance a few times as well. Going 7 furlongs as well Ruffian ran it once and her time is still faster by a lot and lets see Genuine Risk lost the Belmont Stakes and the horse who won that time is a good 3 seconds from Ruffians and Ruffian was even held back. And even in the Match race Jacinto picked Ruffian over a Kentucky Derby winner! She even pulled away before she broke down to be half a length in front. On top of it Ruffians records all stand to this day but one. You should research a lot before saying things that is why you really look like a idiot now for saying Ruffian isn't even good! On top of it Ruffian led every race by every pole and there was never a horse in front of her and if you seen her races when a horse comes to try and get near her she pulls away more and on top of it Ruffian won every race with ease and never been pushed or whipped other then once which she was injured and ran against a great horse which is Hot n Nasty! OH LOL this is gonna make you look way bad now Genuine Risk jockey is also Ruffians! I met him and even have seen the video of him in a interview of who is the best he rode and seen and it's RUFFIAN. Ruffian won 5 graded 1 stakes and Genuine Risk only won two! Genuine Risk lost to even females that weren't even good. This is a joke! Don't get me started on Rachel Alexandra or Personal Ensign!
@AZdoberwoman
@AZdoberwoman 9 жыл бұрын
*+johnofohu123* You could have written glowingly about Ruffian, and truly honored her memory, by lauding her while still respecting others. You instead took the lowest possible of roads, and came across as a preening, childish braggart whom her connections would no doubt be embarrassed to have as a fan. It's cheap, and it's tacky, and you've done her a disservice. What a sad lack of sportsmanship this displays.
@VialliForever
@VialliForever 9 жыл бұрын
johnofohu123 The first and only time Ruffian raced against a colt, she crumbled and died. At least Genuine Risk could hold her own against colts. If that's brutal to say, tough. I don't appreciate being referred to as an "idiot" when all I have done is state an opinion without insulting anyone. I stated that Genuine Risk was perhaps the greatest OVERALL female horse in my opinion. She was NOT the fastest, but she had a very well-balanced mix of qualities. She was durable (unlike Ruffian), she was reasonably fast (not extremely, but she was decent), she had a lot of stamina (unlike Rachel Alexandra), she could handle a variety of tracks and distances (be it dirt or turf, or 1 mile on a fast track or 1 1/2 miles on a sloppy one), and she had courage (many fillies would have been intimidated by a much larger colt like Codex running into them, but Genuine Risk kept on running without hesitation). In short, she had talent in every area, whereas most other top fillies only did in one (e.g. speed).

I swear this a true story. In May 1980, I was a 9 yr old girl living in the So. CA desert...out in the sticks...we only got 2 channels on the tv..36 & 42..and after Saturday morning cartoons, there usually wasn't crap on the tv, except ABC's Wide World of Sports...which, unless there wasn't something I was really interested in, like figure skating, or something like that, I wouldn't bother watching...but, this particular Saturday morning, it was HOT outside...damn hot! (as it can be in the desert...summer starts early...like in March!), so I wanted to stay inside...and suffer along with whatever Wide World of Sports was gonna show...which, was....ugh...boring Kentucky Derby! I didn't give a hoot, now or then, about horse racing...but there I was. So, I watched the whole thing, from the beginning...and I distinctly remember, when Genuine Risk was being led to the starting gates, that I was rooting for her...after all, she was a GIRL, she was wearing green (my favorite color!), and although her odds sucked (13:1...even at 9 yrs old, I knew that was sh*t), I wanted her to win! And...when she did win? I was all alone in my living room jumping up and down screaming SHE WON! SHE WON! SHE WON! I could not believe it....I was soooooo happy! I've never forgotten that day, or that horse. Until I saw the movie Secretariat, I couldn't tell you who won the Kentucky Derby before or after my girl, Genuine Risk...but I'll always remember her...a beauty who beat the boys...lol..!!!!

Genuine Risk is my spot for the 4th greatest filly/mare of all time and no one comes close to her accomplishments that will never be matched. The only female who won or placed in all 3 triple crown races let alone won the Kentucky Derby. This is something that will never be matched by any other filly!!! She is up there with what I consider the true greats: Zenyatta, Ruffian and Lady' Secret. All four have accomplishments that will never be matched

Thank you for sharing this video...it's very clear. The other video that's been up here forever is very difficult to watch...too grainy. Thank you again. This is great.

cont. I thought it was after you came back with new channel. I'm not talking about the original short video of the Preakness race. cf1970 also posted one showing an alternate vantage point of the race and the point where Cordero drifted way out fm rail.

some people put down Durkin as a caller, but if you miss Genuine Risk roaring up on the outside in this race, you're pathetic. This was my 3rd Derby, in person, and guess what? I'm probably the only person in that crowd that didn't buy a ticket on Genuine Risk. Young and dumb.

Rickey Beam Presumably just congratulating him for winning. They were/are friends. It's ironic though, considering that Cordero would be the one to cost Vasquez the following race.

partymanners, I can't seem to bring up the set of videos on 1980 Preakness. I had favorited the one with lengthy discussion by Cossell and Arcaro on controversy. Did they delete them fm your page? thanks

Hi, sorry I didn't reply on this. I thought you had posted new videos of 1980 Preakness. I favorited part 5 I think or maybe 3. It was the one where there was lengthy dialogue betw Cossell and Arcaro on what Cordero did. There was no question or controversy as far as Arcaro was concerned, and he stated emphatically that Cordero shld've been disqualified. There was, I think, more than one video, all the pre race and post parade film. Now I can't find them even one I made favorite.

We'll never know, had Cordero not done what he did in the Preakness and she'd been allowed to come up on the outside as she did in the Derby, would she have been able to overtake Codex.

Loved Ruffian but she was a tragedy in the making due partly to her genetics. By a sire who suffered three broken legs during his career(the fourth in a paddock accident took his life at 22), her dam Shenanagrins had at least one leg injury and was by Native Dancer who though a very successful sire line had many unsound progeny especially those who had multiple Native Dancer lines in their pedigrees (i.e. Eight Belles). Reviewer's own line didn't last long because he had too many unsound progeny that never made it to the track.

I just read that at that time GR ran the last 1/4 mile of the Derby faster than any other horse since guess who !! Yuh, Secretariat ran the last 1/4 mile in 23 sec flat.
