I was a valet right out of high school and used to drive Continentals, Mercedes, Jaguars, Cadillacs, Rolls Royce, etc. on a daily basis. While they all had their own individual pluses and minuses, without a doubt, the Continental had a ride unequaled by any of them! The only other car quieter inside was the Rolls. I miss the old Land Yachts!

I owned a Lincoln Mark VI Signature Series Coupe & that car was all about comfort & class. People always stopped to tell me what a beautiful car it was, and this was in the late 90's! Everyone who rode in it didn't want to get out, the seats were the softest & biggest Lazy Boy type seats available -pure heaven. The engine could not be killed, and it drove like a dream. Yes, it needed repairs like any car of the 80's did, but it was solid & reliable. Sadly it was stolen and I still miss it. =(

I remeber my cousin had a 1980 Town car, he bought it in 1983, i was amazed at the technology with the pushbutton keyless entry, the digital instrument cluster and the stereo system. His was White/White leather with the Lincoln factory turbine wheels, man that car was really nice, i was sold as a Lincoln fanatic after that, i just thought they were so close in competition with Cadillac or in my opinion, just a step better in refinements than Caddy.
@EbonyBunny12 жыл бұрын
The Buick Riviera was the first American car with a digital dash and trip computer, like the Lincolns started in 1980. For 1979, the Caddy Seville & Eldorado offered the trip computer, without the digital dash, but the trip computer was a 1 year only feature. The Buick Riviera continued with the digital dash & trip computer. After 1979, Caddy just gave you avg & instant fuel economy, even with a digital dash ( I think 1981 they started offering a digital dash on the Eldorados & Seville)
@1983jblack Жыл бұрын
@EbonyBunny1 Continental had a Miles to Empty feature on the Mark V beginning in 1978 - An early crude form of trip computer but none the less, it was there

Can't but agree with ya! Older American cars are so much better than new ones either way, they just have a lot more character. But so could be said with a lot of car companies, including Benz. Their older cars have so much more character than their new, because they weren't agressive looking, or anything like that. Was just a relaxed ride with a relaxed design, without sudden curves and angles.
@TVHouseHistorian4 жыл бұрын
I was impressed when they came out with the electronic key pad you could use to unlock the doors or open the trunk. I think that option came out in about 1982? For the time, it was state of the art. Loved these cars.

I had lots of seat time in these. My dad had an black80 Continental Towncar sedan like the one in this video. It had the 351 variable venturi carbureted v8- sounded so good! had a muted, polished rich sound, so luxurious. It also had the softest ride of all the Lincolns I've ever rode in- buggy coach style. He also owned a moonlight blue metallic 84 Towncar, so classy with the moonroof and 1/2 coach vinyl roof. oh, and it had the spoke Lincoln wheels (not hubcaps!) 302 central fuel inj.

What I wouldn't give for a Lincoln Mark VI with opera windows and a half vinyl roof ! They were really elegant cars. Maybe opera windows will make a comeback at some point. I have a weak spot for hood ornaments too.
@boofdfast8 жыл бұрын
The Lincoln Mark VI came in two AND door door versions, the four door was discontinued so not to compete with Town Car sales. I love the Mark VI with the round headlights on top of the hideaway lights... Very badass looking.

They neglected to mention the Premium Sound amplifier, quadraphonic 8-track tape player and optional cassette player. No mention of the external thermometer and power glass moonroof. They also ignored the Versailles which was in it's final year.
@chickenjo232 жыл бұрын
I have the 82 Mark VI Pucci Edition. When you pull the knob for the quadrophonic sound I was amazed how good it still sounds. Mine has 27,000 miles on it. So quiet and smooth.
@Quad8track2 жыл бұрын
@@chickenjo23 That's sweet! Although the knob is to turn on the external amplifier. It's only in quadraphonic mode when playing a quadraphonic 8-track tape. Otherwise, it's 2-channel stereo going through 4 (actually 6) speakers. On your car, the front channels go through the front doors an dashboard speakers pointing up at the windshield. My 1977 has 4 speakers.
@seand27113 жыл бұрын
Those Continental Mark VI models were sharp. However, that optional touring headlight was hideous.
@davidellerman67589 жыл бұрын
Wow! All of you missed the fact that the Continental Mark VI Sedan is nowhere to be seen in this video. One of the best kept secrets of the 1980 models was that the 4 door Mark VI was an eleventh hour addition to the lineup because of the failure of the Versailles. Ford new the new front drive Seville was coming for 1980 and desperately needed a competitor. That is why the four door Mark VI offered no designer series until 1982 and it did not offer a carriage roof, which the 2 door did, until 1983. Although both offered Specialty Roof options in 1982. The bumper slot grille was canned on the 80 Continental to help differentiate it from the Mark because there was already a serious amount of styling shared between the two models. However the grille was deleted from the 81 Mark VI so the two models could share the same bumper as a way of cutting costs.
@boofdfast8 жыл бұрын
The Mark VI was available in two and four door, but the four door sedan version was discontinued, so it wouldn't impede with Town Car sedan sales. The Mark VI had some versions available with round headlights mounted atop the hideaway light panels, very elegant and classy Baroque touch.
@boofdfast8 жыл бұрын
The Town Car Coupe was also very rare, I think going from 1980-82? Maybe 1981, but discontinued to allow the Mark to be the sole Lincoln 2 door coupe offering. I used to own a 1975 Lincoln Town Coupe, in Sandalwood Beige Metallic.

Interesting ! I was driving around some very narrow country roads in County Mayo, Ireland a few years ago, and almost got stuck head to head by the driver of one of these. He was in more of a hurry than I was, so I reversed (but only so I could get a better look at his car !) I never knew what year it was from. But now I DO. A 1980 eh ? NICE ! So thanks and all the best to ya.
@drewburk63095 жыл бұрын
Love these Lincolns. It's a shame the Mark VI was such a poor seller. The Town Car started out selling very poorly as well, but sales started turning around by 1983 and sold over 200,000 units in 1988. Astounding for a car at this price point.
@waterheaterservices4 жыл бұрын
In 1982 the recession did a lot of damage to sales, even to economy cars.

I wish they still made cars like this, they were solid, you SURE don't get that these days. another reason why time shouldn't have moved on...

For 1980, it was called the Lincoln Continental (base coupe and sedan models) and Lincoln Continental Town Coupe (2-door) and Town Car (4-door). For 1981, the base model became Lincoln Town Coupe and Town Car and the 1980 Continental Town Coupe and Town Car became the Town Coupe Signature Series and Town Car Signature Series. It was basically a name change, for the most part, to attract more buyers.
@patricksaxon39835 жыл бұрын

@Nightbird.13 жыл бұрын
@patsaxon You can usually find the 2 door Town Coupe either on Ebay or on Craigslist. If you want to search all of the craigslist ads nationwide at once, just go to allofcraigsDOTcom. I was just looking at one on ebay yesterday. Just be careful about the condition of the car and ask lots of questions pertaining to maintenance, what's been repaired, what needs repair, etc. You can have a car brought to you by a shipper easily, though not cheaply. Good luck!

why would anyone even care about performance? The only performance I need is the ability to make it go forward and backward. It's not even legal to drive as fast as those European sports cars can go anywhere but the autobahn (or however you spell that). For the first time in 40 years Americans are actually producing cars that have some competitive edge against more desirable Korean, European, and Japanese products. Remember what happened in 2009? That was no accident, not even American's want to buy their automotive flatulence anymore. If it weren't for the mainland Chinese having this bizarre obsession with Buick then you wouldn't have that either.

kaydee1696 And then for 1982-83, the Continental Mark VI became simply the Mark VI (per literature, service manuals and other promotional material) despite the leftover Continental exterior badging (which means it was called the "Continental Mark VI" only on the exterior for these two years), since as with the 1981 Town Car, the Mark VI was to show independence from the now Fox-based Continental series. For 1984, the newly-added Mark VII coupe (there was no sedan equivalent) was once again officially called a "Continental Mark," in that case the Continental Mark VII. But this Mark would again lose "Continental" from its model name (both officially _and_ externally) for 1986.

@Nightbird Some Limeys seem to think that all cars should ride like a buckboard wagon and sound like a lawnmower at 60mph, well if they tried driving 1000+ mile round trip in a car like that they would probably want to smash and burn it. Sure a 1980 Lincoln isn't for everyone but compared to the garbage coming out of Britain at that time with the wonderful Lucas wiring they fair pretty well I would say.

While it would ultimately go on to sell well as the Town Car, this was something of a sales dud in 1980. The Mark VI in particular was a flop compared to the Mark V. the Lincoln downsize just didn't play as well as Cadillac's had, though you could argue it was a better drive - margin which widened when Cad adopted the V8/6/4 and then the god awful HT4100.

I'm thinking this ad can't be real. I didn't think the Town Car trim was available in 1980, that it emerged as a model in 1981. Also, where are the 4 door Mark VI's? I understand they were a terrible crime against the Mark lineup from '69 on, but common, they're part of the story! If there really was a Continental Town Car in 1980 I have never seen one in person yet I've seen many Mark VI sedans. It's a simple anecdote but being a former owner of '84, '89, and '93 Town Cars I notice that stuff.
@hughjass54307 жыл бұрын
You're right. The Town Car emerged as a separate model in 1981. This is the 1980 Continental Town Coupe. The only difference is badging. The 2 door models were discontinued in '82.
