Circa 1990 the lady in my life had a wedding car business using white Silver Shadows. Because nobody gets married on a Wednesday we swapped cars. I upset the guys in the office by coming to work in the RR. She had fun tearing up the rural parts of Hampshire in my Alfa Romeo 75 2.0TS. Great fun.

Makes this Aussie nostalgic. In February 1978 I took delivery of a new S registered Silver Shadow II in Nutmeg, which was a Corniche colour available at extra cost. Mine had beige leather with dark brown piping. I trust this car comes with the front headrests as well as the rear. My other thought was Peacock Blue. But in the late 70's early 80's brown was all the go. When the 1979 series came out with the front washer / brushes for the headlights I asked for a quote to add them to my car. That was declined as they required indentations in the beaver panels below the headlights. How was it that a 24-year-old Aussie took delivery of a new Shadow II in Conduit Street London. 1978 was the last year of the tax free person import scheme for bringing back a car that you owned overseas. After 15 months Use & Possession you got it completely exempt of the 92.85% import duty and sales tax. This tax protected the Australian car industry. Even the Citroen ID19 and Peugeots were assembled in Melbourne from 1961 to 1967. That year of 1978 6,000 Aussies took delivery of every British and European car they could find the money for a half priced cars. Jags, Benz, BMW, Citroens, Ferraris. For a year it was my weekend car kept in a pub barn in Wiltshire. For my work - weekdays I purchased a new tax paid blue Citroen 2CV6. About the most extreme motoring transition possible. 15 new 2CVs = 1 Roller $$. Noisy 602 cc 2 cylinder air cooled to quiet 6,750 cc V8 waft machine.... After my year working in the UK living in London, 2 friends helped me disassemble the 2CV6 Club and pack into Citroen crates and sent it home on 2 separate shipments as second hand parts - 57% duty on half the new car value. I could only get an import license for 1 car per year that was for the Roller. 2 friends in the car club reassembled it for me in Sydney in my parent's garage. Meanwhile I went off youth hosteling around Europe for 5 months, often picking up hitch hikers or giving lifts to fellow hostellers. Usually, I would find somewhere safe for the car for the night and walk into the hostel with a back pack.. Even took it into Hungary but got fearful if anything happened and headed down to Yugoslavia after only 2 days and then on to the Italian Dolomites. I slept on the back seat a few times - quite comfy... Did I mention I scored a half price ticket on Concorde from London to New York on the first leg homeward Down Under. 3 hrs 23 minutes, 58,000 feet, Mach 2.02 ... living the half price dreams... I did 31,000 kms in the Shadow II in my 18 months in UK & Europe. Even camped at a 2CV Rend vous in Copenhagen. Disguised as a 2CV with a genuine Citroen 2CV6 Club covering the SILVER SHADOW II badge on the boot. Chevrons over the RR logos. 2CV Cross sticker on door. People found the radiator grill great as a shaving mirror... fun..
