I remember watching this final round and my dad said if Jack wins he’d take the family for a steak dinner. Great result all around.

One of the great things about the U.S. Open is that the final round round falls each year on Father’s Day, so the dad’s get a hall pass to watch as much of the final round as they want. For this one I was at my in-laws and my father in law was an avid golfer (although he was an Arnie guy and did not like Nicklaus). It was a big deal that Jack was in the hunt at age 40 and I barely moved out of my chair for the entire round. I just sat there for hours not saying a word, not wanting to jinx the moment. I barely noticed that the family cat was asleep on the table next to me the entire time. For at least 2 hours I barely breathed or made a sound. When Nicklaus raised his putter on 17 knowing his putt for birdie was going in I screamed “HE MADE IT!!” Well that poor cat started scrambling for his life, I swear leaving claw marks on the wooden table. We laughed about that for years and the story was retold many times, especially on Father’s Day.

18 majors, 19 second place in majors. Most top 5 majors over 20 more wins over the next player, Bobby jones 13 majors( the ams in those days had the best players in the golfing world) retired at age 28 went months between majors without touching a club , received law degree and several other degrees during this time. But because jack continued jack is the goat, during Bobby's time nobody was close to his major total, he retired on top of the mountain.

Thesa were the glory days of championship golf on television. At that point ABC carried the Open, the PGA, and the British Open. I really enjoyed the intro's, when Jim McKay would set up the final round, then "Love's Theme" would burst on the screen, with McKay saying " ABC Sports ... presents a National Championship ". It set up a day of DRAMA !

That opening anthem with Jim McKay giving a dramatic narrative followed by Love’s Theme by Barry White’s Love Unlimited Orchestra was the introduction of the best day of golf during my teens, 18-hole coverage of the final round of the U.S. Open every year on Father’s Day.

Seeing Jack waive off the celebration to allow Aoki an undisturbed line, & opportunity to putt is what makes Nicklaus so special. Grace, & Composure no matter how things play out. What a guy.

Jack giving the opportunity to Aoki to putt out on 18 first was a class act not taken. Truly inexplicable.

Nicklaus wins the US Open, Watson wins The Open, Nicklaus wins the PGA. Then in 1981 at the Masters Watson and Nicklaus are first and second heading into the final round and should be paired together. But organisers choose to send out the final two pairs First (Watson) & Third (Norman) and Second (Nicklaus) & Fourth (Mahaffey). Jack was FURIOUS.

But only thirteenth on the money list in 1980, despite winning the two most lucrative prizes. Which indicates, as the OP suggested, that Jack in 1980 wasn’t quite the player he had been from 1963 - 1978.

Hate to break it to you, but Jack was never electric and quick: he always played slow and stolid, which drove a lot of people nuts, especially the way he would stand an eternity over putts. I really don't get the comment at all. Here he's setting the US Open record, crushing his drives, and he's not the same force?🤔🙄

to encourage better, more exciting play, how about a system of per-hole financial rewards and penalties in rounds 3&4 of all pro tournaments? Like +1K per bird, +2K per eagle, and -1K per bogie, -2K per double bogie etc. Think how cool it would be on #12 at the Masters to watch one thousand dollar ball after another disappearing into the murky depths of Reyes Creek!
