It's the 1980 USGP of Motocross at Carlsbad California - the mecca of motocross at the time. In the ten years since the first USGP at Carlsbad, no American had won the overall 500cc championship. While American motocross riders were becoming more and more competitive with the Europeans throughout the 1970s, only two US riders had even won a moto at the USGP at Carlsbad prior to 1980.
In this great moment of opportunity, enter Marty Moates - a local privateer rider on an LOP-backed production Yamaha YZ465. While most all fans and even the commentators expected Brad Lackey to be the US rider to dethrone the Europeans at Carlsbad, it was Marty Moates who got the hole shot in both motor, and rode like a world-beater to (literally) beat the world on his home turf.
This is perhaps the quintessential underdog story played out on the largest stage of American motocross, with coverage provided by ABC's Wide World of Sports.

I was 13 years old and my dad and I watched this and we couldn’t believe Marty won both motos.. I’m 54 and my dad has passed, but every time I watch this race I get tears of joy in my eye, as it was one of the greatest sports moments I ever witnessed. The other was the same year with the US Olympic Hockey Team winning Gold. Watched that with my dad as well. Amazing memories. 🇺🇸

Yep, there were a lot of great racers in that race. Brad Lackey was world champion. He got by Moates once. LOL. That was briefly.

As a 15 year old Japanese, he was my greatest hero. The first American to win in his home country over a World GP rider, just as I had imagined from the news and pictures in the motocross magazines at the time, the amazing riding and the crowd's enthusiasm were the best!

Absolutely, John. Between Moates' win in 1980, and the US MX Des Nations perfect score in '86, there were lots of highs, but this still takes the cake.

I raced there. I lived in Vista and on Sundays I would hear this roar of something every now and then. It was the 500 motos taking off all the way from Carlsbad.

I loved the mix racing back in the 1970s and 1980s those were real racers and did all that working out of a van , had to be a mechanic, racer and truck driver so much better then todays

It was certainly a more attainable activity then, back when most could perform a top end rebuild in a couple of hours, vs. the massive time and expense for any four stroke motor work.

Thank you for posting Teddy. Great choice of music. Same scenario as Rudy: the underdog wins! In my opinion, quite possibly the greatest (or one of them) upsets in all motor-sports history. Still give me chills to watch this over and over. In fact, I acquired an '80 YZ465 because if this victory....

You're welcome! Yes, one of moto's greatest underdog tales and very deserving of the "Rudy" treatment! My dad also acquired a Yamaha 465 shortly after this race. Great, great motor and such a strong racing pedigree!
