Extra Time at the Empire Stadium.
Sammy Lee is clearly offside. The linesman gives it but is overruled by Referee Clive Thomas.
I'm not sure it was a free kick either. Nice reaction by Dalglish to Billy Bonds' tackle.
Magnificent save by Ray Clemence.
When asked, John Lyall told referee that he "felt cheated." The ever popular Thomas reported him to the Football Association.

Even though i was only 7, I remember this game very well. I was at my cousin’s house and he was absolutely West Ham mad. When Liverpool scored in the 118th minute he burst into tears and ran upstairs to his bedroom. His mum turned off the TV and went up to console him. She decided to take us out to the park and then to dinner as consolation for the fact that West Ham had lost. It wasn’t until the 9pm news came on that we realised that West Ham had equalised in the 120th minute.

Offside according to the Laws of the Game in place at the time. Back in the early 1980s, no such language concerning "interfering with play", "involved in active play", etc. existed in the Offside Law. Back then a player could be called offside if the ball was played down the left flank and a teammate on the far right flank was in an offside position.
@krishnarajballie6294
@krishnarajballie6294 9 жыл бұрын
I agree. It is ridiculous. You miss the point . The Laws of the Game back then did not invoke any sort of judgement call on the part of the ref. with regard to offside. That's one reason why it was eventually modified to include phrases like "Involved in active play", "seeking to gain an advantage", which all involve a somewhat subjective judgement on the part of the referee. Incidentally, back in the 1970s and 80s players were also sometimes "persuaded" to step off the field momentarily if they were near the end line but in an offside position so as not to be called offside. Now of course that brings up the whole question of "leaving the field of play without the permission of the referee" but that's a different matter.
@krishnarajballie6294

David Shreeves I am well aware of the "player hiding behind the keeper|" scenario of which you speak. Has nothing to do with offside. Anyway, I don't believe you know "nothing about the game" as you seem to think I've implied.

To all the people arguing that "interfering with play" was not part of offside in 1981, you are only half correct. The idea that an offside player needed to be interfering with play, first appears in 1903! It was re-emphasized several times over the decades. When I used to run the line in the late seventies, referees used to remind us of it. The thing was, everyone assumed that to be counted as not interfering a player had to be about 50 yards away on the other wing. That's why players did step off the pitch to show non involvement with play. Starting in 1997, and coming to a head in 2005, the Law was essentially redefined so that interference meant touching or challenging for the ball, or blocking line of sight

As a Hammers fan, it wasn't offside and the player wasn't interfering with play either! Parkes had clear vision as the ball came through and Lee never touched the ball, but Liverpool had a great side and West Ham did very well to beat and compete against so many First Division sides! The replay finished with a deflected Bonds own goal, so Liverpool always had their bit of luck. They could've done with a bit of that this season!

Lee wasn't offside as he was in a prone position, as a result of the hit he took in the back, so the rules as was allow attacking player to be in an offside position and not be flagged as long as he doesn't interfere with play!
@numsig

This rule didn't apply in 1981. If you were offside, you were offside, end of story. Clive Thomas had a knack for exploiting the fact that "referees decision is final" rule which was far less questioned in those days allowing for all sorts of unscrupulous decisions to be gotten away with. In an era with some very dodgy decisions and people like Clive Thomas and Don Revie active.... you can be sure there was a lot of unreported corruption and bribery.

Clive Thomas spent his career awarding dodgy decisions to Liverpool. Also see the 1977 FA Cup Semi final. Linesman cleary gave this decision but was told to drop it by Thomas, in 1977 the linesman was quoted as saying Thomas came in after the match and said "Ok, we have to all get our stories straight with this one lads" after disallowing a winning goal that was neither offside nor handball.

Absolutely nothing wrong with the Kennedy goal. These days nobody would blink an eye, the downed player is clearly not interfering with play or seeking to gain an advantage, and the goalkeeper can see the ball all the way. However back then referees who applied the rule correctly as we would today were few and far between. Clive Thomas, a man ahead of his time.

Wavy Curlzz Bitter. “Cost West Ham two cup wins” indeed! McDermott’s offence wasn’t a sending off according to the Laws of the Game. It is also not clear that the ball wasn’t going to hit the bar anyway. Sammy Lee was not interfering with play - this was indeed part of the Laws of the Game at the time, contrary to what you say. He was on the floor, having fallen there accidentally and not seeking an advantage. It’s also disputable he was even in an offside position at all. Would be interested to know how Liverpool “cheated” in 2006!

1. Lee WAS 100% interfering with play ... he CLEARLY ducked ... if he continued to get up the ball would have smacked him in the head .. .so disallowed for offside should have been the correct decision. Clive Thomas's incompetence/negligence cheated us out of winning the League Cup. 2. In Cardiff West Ham put the ball out for Liverpool's injured player ... but instead of doing the usual sporting thing and kicking back to the GK, they kicked right into the corner and pressed creating the chance for Gerrard's once in 1000 attempts goal. Not specifically cheating but unbelievably unsporting! ... that's why we feel cheated out of what would have been a deserved win in 2006. The better team lost that final.

@G K He isn't implying that it is "luck"... he is implying that in fifty odd years of football, the old adage "these things even themselves out" still hasn't applied to Liverpool yet. Getting favourable dodgy decisions all through the 70s, all through the 80s, 90s, 00s and even today with a "new" system.... Liverpool still gets the decisions almost every time. Clive Thomas was the 70s/80s version of VAR for Liverpool. He still hasn't made up a reason for the 77 FA Cup Semi final goal being disallowed!
