SMU had some amazing battles that season. One could argue they deserved to be national champions.

I believe Penn State had a slightly better team bc they could throw and SMU wasn't a good throwing/come from behind team, but had SMU WON THIS GAME they'd have been NC... maybe. PSU lost to Bama that year/ The Walter Lewis/Joey Jones/Ricky Moore BAMA team, good, not great... However, The Voters felt a loss vs Bama was more impressive than a tie w/ ARK. Geez, that was a lifetime ago.

@@bishlap Beating Georgia was more impressive than beating Pitt in what was a home game for SMU. I didn't complain about PS being number 1 but some of my classmates did. I lived in the DFW area so we were biased.

@@bobbywise2313 if I recall- That Pitt team was Dan Marino's worst and he had a terrible year. The game vs SMU was a low scoring shit-fest If my fkd up brain remembers correctly. After comparing teams AFTER the Bowls, yes, I can see why the writers (who usually suck) named PSU NC. Penn St shut down Herschel for most of the game - wonder how they'd have handled both Dickerson and James? anyway, PEACE.

@@bishlap I think it was generally known that the Penn State/ Georgia winner would be NC. And Blacklidge had a good game against the Dawgs. Warner was pretty good as well. The didn't totally stop Walker but controled him enough. They would probably have beaten SMU as well but SMU did have an underrated defense that year. I think it would have been close.

@@bobbywise2313 funny thing though, I'd bet if those same 2 teams were in the CFB "playoff" today , the powers that be would screw it up, or at least try to... they'd probably match PSU/SMU as a semi final so they wouldn't even play each other in a TITLE Game. Maybe, maybe not, I just don't trust anyone in CFB w/ power. Surprised to see anyone that still remembers College football from those days. Have a great weekend. PEACE.

The NFL Strike ended the next day with AMERICA'S TEAM returning to Texas Stadium beating Tampa Bay 14-9 and then 4 days later defeating Cleveland 31-14......GO COWBOYS!!!!
