Martin Back On Track
Steve Martin, troubled by a sore wrist through most of the season, began the Summer Tour in healthy fashion, coming from fourth place to win the $95,000 Buffalo Open.
Martin began the stepladder finals by defeating Art Trask and Guppy Troup. He next rolled his highest game of the tournament to get by a similarly injured and recovered Mark Roth, 268-255, in the semifinal game.
After jumping out to a substantial lead in the final match against Wayne Webb, Martin had a moment of worry as the top-seed stepped up in the 10th frame needing a double and nine pins to win his second Buffalo championship in four years. Webb left a 4-7-9 split on his first attempt, making Martin $12,000 richer for his sixth tour title. Martin had earned a berth in the stepladder finals by defeating hometown favorite Tom Baker in the position round game.
