In reality during this attack the Argentinian pilots flew their skyhawks and daggers extremely low, often at 4 metres over the sea to avoid being targeted by naval artillery, often flying in between ships to prevent them from shooting as they could target other ships in the vicinity. When they approached using the cover of the mountains, they nevel flew over 20 metres to take advantage of the the earth curvature, and the terrain.

I'm a Brit, but I still think that those Argentinian pilots were the most daring, skilled and bravest pilots to have fought in my lifetime. A few more breaks and a few more bombs arming themselves and they might have won the war for Argentina. In the words of Wellington, "...it was the nearest run thing you ever saw in your life."

@@PeterEvansPeteTakesPictures That is assuming Thatcher (who wasn't affected by the bombs) would have given up. Not sure about that. Also 4 m over see and 20 over mountains seems a rather bold claim. To put it diplomatically. Not least because of the infamous weather.

Nice one Capt. I was 15 years old and furious some country had invaded our lands " suggestive". My Dad and I would stay up late watching news night and teletext about this. Many years after I came to realise what a waste of life on both sides, I even felt sorry for the Argentinians being used by the failing junta to hide the fact their economy was shot. I do recall an Argentinian General said " If you look back at history the Brits do not like to lose in war". RIP to all souls lost both sides with no hesitation.

I think true patriotism is understanding that one’s nation isn’t perfect but instead hoping and working to make it more perfect overtime and that includes acknowledging the mistakes of the past. Unfortunately we can’t undo these things but ideally we can learn from them and never repeat them, though we so often do.

I was about 12 years old when this war happened. When the news came on the telly, my dad would tell me to go to my room, I had no idea why back then, but now I understand that he did not want me to potentially see the horrors of war on TV, at such a young age.

Met a fellow in Iraq, he was a contractor with a PMC from the UK. He was a Falklands vet. After that he went AWOL from the Royal Navy, joined the Foreign Legion, did six years, went home, joined the Army and did a tour in Northern Ireland. Hell of a guy. He calls beer “sherbet”, which I get but don’t get at the same time. He lived an adventure and is a second hand lion now.

Hi Cap. greeting from Argentina. I saw 2 mistake on the loads of the Mirage and the A-4C. The frist: M-2000 have the marks of the of the M-III sqn (Grupo 8) figter only, not the IAI Dagger (Grupo 6) that made the attacks (fighter bomber). The comon loads in the Dagger was 3 drops tanks (1300lts) and 2 bomb. in the rear fuselaje hardpoint. For the A-4C, we never use the bomb on the wing hardpoins, only drop tanks. And for the Fleet air Arm Sea harrier, as far I remember they use 1 x wing AIM-9L. The GR.3 operates from the HMS Hermes, because her mayor capacity hangar. I love this historical reenactments

Oil and natural gas has been discovered around the Falklands, which just so happens to be correlated to the Argentine government increasingly reasserting their claim to the islands. As I recall, the bbc explained in detail exactly why the British ships were 'lucky'. The next day, that lead to them being very unlucky because the bbc had helpfully reported that the bombs were being dropped from too low an altitude and weren't getting the time necessary to arm themselves which is why they were hitting the ships without exploding. That bbc report lead to an adjustment in Argentine tactics and several ships went down with the biggest loss of life in The Falklands War, many of them, as this report says, only 17 years old. Several hundred young men lost their lives, others were maimed for life both physically and mentally because of it. The soldiers on land had a much harder time too because The Atlantic Conveyor was sunk and that carried all the transport chinooks, we only had one left. As a result the army had to walk over 50 miles before they even begun fighting, without the artillery support they should've had(also sunk/no transport). Who gets to play the part of the bbc?

Without them the troops had the horrible task of advancing across the island on foot carrying all their equipment.

Reports from several Argentinian pilots showed many deliberately avoided engaging Canberra thinking she was a hospital ship - she was used as a point of reference during the attacks though. Ironically being painted white probably saved her as multiple attack runs went straight over her head. I presume (although I've never found anything to confirm my suspicions) some pilots would have used her as a shield thinking the British wouldn't shoot towards a hospital ship.

You're carrying too many Sidewinders - the Sea Harriers over the Falklands carried two (although mounting four was possible) - Also the Argentinian planes did not have flares.
@LondonSteveLee

PS perhaps that balances itself out because some certain Sidewinder kills were being defeated by flares that wouldn't have been there.

@@Rover200Power GustaHeavy it's true. There is no record of Argentinian pilots calling the Harriers "the black death". And there is a lot of bibliography in Spanish that they simply do not know in England. The pilots called them "Harriers", which is a simple and quick word to understand. On the other hand, the British and Americans use the phrase "The Black Death" to name something in several of their wars. It must be something cultural. But surely not on the Argentine side. My two cents.

@@balker8973 It's been suggested that the Argentines called Harriers 'botflies' (moscardones), which in Spanish could be mistaken as 'muerta negra' to an untrained ear over a distorted radio reception. In either case, anecdotal evidence from the likes of Sharkey Ward and David Morgan says that the Harrier pilots would taunt the Argentines by broadcasting over unsecured radio "La Muerte Negra ees-a coming!". I have my doubts as the veracity of that claim, as EMCON surely would have prevented it, but I wasn't there and only have their word on it.

The blue/grey (extra dark sea grey I think it was called, but looked blue to me) and white scheme was painted over as dark sea grey on the voyage down to the Falklands to make the Harriers less visible over both land and sea and in the dark skies.

You mean the French Exocets? There were allegations that a British SAS team had covertly sabotaged a batch that France provided during the war, and they certainly helped Britain hoover up Exocets on the secondary arms market to prevent resupply. France didnt provide the IFF kill codes they put in the exports to prevent them being used again French ships though (at least not before the British losses) as this would have destroyed their credibility as an arms supplier.

@@watcherzero5256 Probably a reference to the fact that many of the bombs dropped in San Carlos by the Argentines failed to detonate. Thirteen bombs struck British ships and failed to detonate. It was thought that the Argentines were not setting their fuses correctly to account for the low level attacks and the bombs did not arm. This was reported in the British press and their bombing became more successful as a result, most notably the sinking of HMS Coventry.

The bombs worked as designed - they issue is they were being dropped below the minimum fuse height because they were scared of Sea Dart.

the Falklands conflict is an interesting one. The Falklands islands are wayyyyy the fuck away from the UK, but the residents there feel like British citizens (i respect that). People in Donbass feel like Russian citizens. So the Ukraine intervention is a lot like the Falklands war (minus the fact that Falklands is 99998 miles away from UK and Donbass is actually on border of Russia)
