The Brazil national football team participated in the 1982 FIFA World Cup, and in doing so maintained their record of being the only team to enter every World Cup Finals.
Brazil played until the Second Group Round, where they were defeated by Italy. This result meant that they finished the tournament in fifth place for the second time in history.
All eyes were on Brazil in Group 6. In Zico, Sócrates, Falcão, Éder and others, the rejuvenated auriverde boasted an offensive firepower that promised a return to the glory days of 1970. The tri-campeão lived up to all expectations in the First Group round, beating an unexpectedly strong Soviet side 2-1 in a very entertaining first match thanks to a 20-metre Éder goal two minutes from time, then Scotland and New Zealand, scoring four goals each time.
It was in Group C, a true "Group of Death" with Brazil, Argentina and Italy, that World Cup history was made. In the opener, the Azzurri prevailed 2-1 over Diego Maradona's side in an ill-tempered game in which Italy defenders Gaetano Scirea and Claudio Gentile proved to be able to stop the Argentinian attack.
Argentina now needed a win over Brazil on the second day, but they were no match. Although the Brazilians had the better of the play, Maradona's Argentina side continued pushing for an equaliser and had a clear penalty denied by the referee. After that, Brazil scored twice, and Maradona was sent off after he kicked a rival in a moment of unsportsmanship.
The third-day match between Brazil and Italy would be a game to remember. Twice Italy went in the lead through Paolo Rossi's goals, and twice Brazil came back. At 2-2, Brazil would have gone through on goal difference, but on 74 minutes, a poor clearance from an Italy corner kick went back to the Brazil six-yard line where Rossi and Francesco Graziani were waiting. Both world-class strikers reflexively aimed at the same shot, Rossi connecting and sending Italy to the semifinals in one of the all-time great games of World Cup history.

If there is ever a country that can produce another 82 national squad like this team it’s Brazil 👍🏻 the problem with modern day Brazil is these boys are now being sent to football colleges ! The 82 squad were probably one of the last self taught on the streets of the Favelas picked up at 15 and put on a league teams books . Now we still get that extraordinary street skill but only from the odd few , Ronaldo , Ronaldinho & Neymar 👍🏻 but never a complete team anymore like in the 70’s & 80’s !!

Sir, you definitely know what you are talking about. After that game finished, football went downhill. Everybody started being more defensive than necessary and that killed the beauty of the game.

@@thornbird6768 You still had a great team in 86 WC and many players were still there from 82 WC team so 82 was not your last great team . Go and check your 86 WC team names :) They were unlucky with penalty shoot out vs France plus Zico missed penalty as well ,perhaps some players from 82 team past they best ...I don't really know but it was top quality team .

Bullshit, have you see 86, the same as always, 90? the same as always. But, today it's about millions and millions of Dollar, and you simply can't win only attacking, that's simply bullshit! since 94, the first games always 3-0,4-2.2-0... because in the first turn you can risk, but after that you are out, when you loose, and you can see it, EM 2021, Italy and other's the first turn 3-0 vs Swiss, 3-0 Turkey, don't remember the last! then it started to decline,, i remember Italy Belgium, i think 2-1, then 1-0 until final penalty, like many times before! it happens only in rare case that a final is won with more goals, we vs Brazil 2014 7-1 , but Brasil was extremely bad, we were only good, but Brasil was guilty for that result! because?? absolute bad Defence, and after 2 goals even the best striker start to loose the motivation! Italy Germany that's something else, both Europe superpower, enorm rivaliti, passion, will not to loose, i'm German and i don't remember a match that it was not full of action, defense and attack! they ended always with more goals, only one time we meet us during a WC,Euro and ended in penalty, 2016!

The Most beautiful Football Team who played at a Football World Cup !! Zico was a genius, he played a fantastic football. This team had to win this World Cup if the referee did not forget to give a red card to the Italian player Claudio Gentile. He took only a yellow one, but really deserved a red one (he deserved a red one even during the previous game against Argentina)

Several players deserved to get out of the pitch...Gentile tshould have been the first one. He destroyed the Tee shirt of Claudio Ardiles during this game...as he did with Zico against Brasil

The football they played was simply art itself….. like a Da Vinci painting… Eder was my favourite…. The goal against USSR was just unbelievable, chipped it and hit with the same foot before it even touched the ground.. and then the delicate chip against the Scots …but my lord if only his free kick had hit the bar and gone in….. it was so far out, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a free kick hit so hard….. what a player…

This midfield was beyond talented. I'd love to see this team play now on the carpet like pitches, lighter balls and boots, ultra protection from opposing players trying to break your legs. Not to mention the back pass rule. People say football is harder now, I tend to disagree.

As great as Brazil team was in 1982, the 1970 team was a better team. Zico himself has said, if he was to pick up the best Brazilian team of all time, he would choose the defense of 1974 World Cup, the midfield of 1982 (in which he was a part of ), and the forward line of the 1970 team. In other words he admits that his 1982 team was better than other Brazilian teams only in the midfield department. Hungary of 1954, Holland of 1974, and Brazil of 1982 are the 3 best teams that deserved to win a World Cup.

I only have footage to rely on ,but in terms of sides I’ve seen in my lifetime,that 82 team is still the best side I’ve ever seen & the only reason Italy won was because if u remember it was a different system in terms of qualifying, two rounds of group stages & then semi finals,Brazil only needed a point in that game with Italy to reach the semifinals, took Italy lightly & lost despite being head & shoulders the best team in the tournament that year!

This was the best team ever. True Brazilians, not like the ones of today. I am Italian, but Socrates was my favourite player. The Brazil players of today can only dream of being like these players. And more importantly, they played for their shirt. Viva Brazil and Italy.

the Italians were better as they beat them 3-2 and went on to win the world cup. The best Brazilian team was 1970! Not only was the 1970 the best Brazilian team, it was the best team ever! Pele and company were the best!

@@ronbonora7872 honestly amico, I still think it was the 82 team. I even Italy had a great team in that Final, they even went one up before loosing. But they were unlucky too, they had the long semi final against Germany and one day less to rest. Plus the Mngr took off their main striker. Socrates though, wow, to me, even though they had no Pale, the Best ever amico. Pitty today the Brazilians do not play like those days, actually, i feel some do not even deserve to wear the shirt. I love the Brazilian lady fans though😁😁😁👍

Nasci exatamente nesse ano de 1982 e é impressionante como o futebol, de maneira geral, era muito mais prazeroso de assistir. Tinha mais espaço para os talentos jogarem. Hoje em dia, mesmo as grandes seleções, fazem um gol e depois vira aquela “massa” lá atrás, só se defendendo e jogando de contra ataque. Como bem disse o doutor Sócrates uma vez, vai chegar o tempo em que a FIFA terá que alterar as regras e cada equipe terá que jogar com 10 jogadores para haver mais espaço. Como espetáculo, o futebol piorou muito.

Sadness after their fall. I was 12 years old. And even more in 1986 in guadalajara. And since then, a brazilian football with less "flavor", even with romario, bebeto and Ronaldo. Something special has gone. Disappeared.

in 1981 and 82, prior to the WC, this team beat Germany in Berlin, France in Paris, England in Wembley, Spain and Portugal... they had won all their qualifying matches. Mozer, Junior, Leandro, Isidoro Cerezo, Eder, Socrates, Falcao,Zico... holy the shit technique level was supreme, shame their 2 main strikers were hurt and they had to go with Serginho, who was a good player but not on that level... you put Careca or Reinaldo as their 9 and they win that WC and possibly are viewed as the greatest team ever, even with their defensive flaws

@@glaucosouza1971 Mais ou menos. O Telê não gostava do comportamento do Reinaldo, que era um craque, então nem foi convocado. O titular seria o Careca, que se machucou já na Espanha. Aí sobrou o Dinamite, que até hoje ninguém entende porquê foi reserva do Serginho.

@@SDonnini82 se não me falha a memória (de um desconto pls, tinha 11 anos na época) o Reinaldo já tava lesionado no joelho, foi convocado e depois cortado. Mas, na vdd o time idealizado por Tele era razoavelmente diferente, principalmente esquema tático...mas ai é papo pra outro chopp.

É por isso que eu sei que o Careca era o titular, mas foi cortado na Espanha após lesão. O Reinaldo nunca perdoou o Telê por não tê-lo convocado pra Copa. Ele diz que tinha totais condições de jogo.

Brasil contra URSS tuvo algo de suerte y mucho desorden. Socrates y Eder ganaron el partido, pero Brasil como equipo fue muy desordenado en el ataque y más en la defensa.....Las individualidades brasileñas jugaron al tope, por eso ganaron, no por un sistema ordenado

Looking back on it, Brazil in 1982 were not really a team - only a brilliant midfield - probably the best in World Cup history. But I think that apart from Argentina in 1974 and 1978 they were the last team to try and play real old fashioned attacking football.

Para os que falam que Serginho não era para estar na Seleção e que Tele errou, Serginho era a terceira opção. O titular Reinaldo se machucou ainda no Brasil e o reserva imediato, Roberto , se machucou na Espanha durante a preparação. E Valdir Perez foi o titular porque ganhou a confiança do Tele quando arrebentou na turnê Europeia que o Brasil fez em 81, inclusive pegando pênalti contra a Alemanha. Lei de Murphy.

En eso milenio solo los hermanos brasilenos ganaron 9 finales contra Europa y Sudamerica. Ganaran 3 finales contra Argentina 2004, 2005 y 2007. Ganaran 2 finales contra Alemania 2002 y 2016. Serginho Chulapa "pé torto" desde o primeiro jogo e Eder, um pouquinho melhor, mas nunca esteve a altura dos grandes atacantes brasileiros, de antes e depois de 82. Ali só saiu gol quando colocados na cara do gol, marcando de tabela sem nenhuma jogada individual em momentos decisivos. Assim ficou impossível ganhar aquela Copa expondo a todo tempo os jogadores do meio com o "clima do já ganhei" sem ter os matadores na frente!

Cara... eu nunca consegui entender Serginho Chulapa na selecão brasileira de futebol... nunca! Vai perder gol assim na China!!! Tá igual ao Miller qdo jogol pela seleção... mesmos sintomas: não sabem finalizar, aí vc tem que esperar que Zico, Sócrates, que não são centroavantes, resolvam... é pouco pra uma seleção. Foi uma péssima convocação essa do Chulapa... com todo o respeito que ele merece, afinal, funcionava, jogando pelos clubes que passou.

O Brasil continua produzindo bons jogadores, mas como vai ganhar uma Copa do Mundo com um técnico que acha que é mais relevante para o time o centroavante marcar o adversário do que marcar gols? Tite é um covarde, não compreende a essência do esporte. Até a seleção de 94, que era uma equipe que marcava muito, dava liberdade para os atacantes. Hoje o ponta direita tem que ficar correndo atrás do lateral e tem gente que ainda acha que isso é inteligência tática.

Não é não. Geração de 80 é uma cambada de fracassados, não ganharam nada e são superestimados por jornalista preguiçoso e petista. Os caras dos anos 90 e começo dos 00 são muito melhores, que dirá a melhor seleçao da história (70).

That was a wonderful side except for Serghino. He was given countless chances throughout the World Cup and blew them all. He should have been dropped early on in the tournament and Brazil may have gone on to win the World Cup.

@@ronbonora7872 I know you’re Italian and your team won mostly because of its defense and less ego. It was focused. Brazil went into the pitch with a 9” stiletto and unfortunately with Serginho also. But the artistry brought into the pitch is the reason this team is so beloved. I am Brazilian and Italy played concisely, almost surgically before a team with unbelievable individual skills.

A maior culpa foi sem dúvida nenhuma , Serginho chulapa , porque mesmo com as limitações de Valdir Peres , o time tinha uma boa defesa e um meio campo positivo , tanto que o Serginho chulapa era municiado constantemente , o time jogava sempre no campo do adversário , mas como o homem gol (Serginho chulapa) era perna de pau e pé torto , desperdicou uma tonelada de chances reais de gols , resumindo - se tivéssemos um centroavante matador , teríamos ganhado a copa facilmente .
