I was 22, living in Texas, closeted to my family, work knew but I'd never even kissed a boy, and I saw John Glines thank his partner on live TV. It was amazing. Truly a ground breaking moment.

I remember seeing this when I was in high school and feeling I was not so alone. Then I remember Johnny Carson making a joke about it the next night.

For anyone wondering, Johnny Carson's joke about this moment can be seen here from 1:23 to 1:50: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bpZjjJmAy5yukWQ.html&ab_channel=%EC%8A%AC%EB%A1%AF369 Apparently I am in the minority here; I saw Carson's joke and then looked up John Glines' acceptance speech to see what he was talking about. For most of you it was the reverse.

From what I can remember... it was not so much a joke, but in his opening monologue he said, "And I would like to thank my lover Lawrence". The audience laughed and he did a few of his classic uncomfortable "takes". Making me think there may have been something wrong with the proud statement I heard on the Tonys. (Strange what can stick in one's memory after 30 years!)

I've never heard that Johnny Carson made a joke about TORCH SONG winning the Tony or my speech. Do you remember what he said?
