My first race was the 1981 World 600......I'm 46 now and still love watching these old classics. Miss these days.....the drivers, the cars, the sound were just amazing. Been to well over 100 Cup races since. Hasn't been the same to me since Earnhardt died. Went to Darlington this pass weekend. Throwback schemes are cool but it's still missing something. NASCAR needs some major changes. One is this coming weekend......no more Brickyard. Boring race. Time to find a short track or bring back an old track.

They need to get back to racing and team innovation and stop making cookie cutter cars for cookie cutter tracks. Since this is STOCK car racing, why not STOCK looking cars? Custom tube chassis underneath but factory body panels on the outside. Factory stock engine block and crank and team innovation on the rest.

@@kevinsrides2916 bumper cars at bumper tracks is nessessary I suppose. I would prefer GROWN MEN with CREDENTIALS that go beyond go carts (I’ll give Lake Speed a pass here lol) over 15 year old rich kids. The real cookie cutters are the DRIVERS. Someone needs to start a series with STOCK. CARS.

It was great back then! Even though, you may not have had as many winners, or quite as many vying for the lead throughout the race the strategy that was laid out and addressed throughout the race that often LED to the WIN!!! Most of the top 5 to 7 drivers could depend and trust one another to not pull stupid daring egotistical if I can't nobody will attitude! (I saw my first race in person 1971 Southeastern 500 Bristol speedway) I was sold , hooked, addicted, and totally enthralled, with NASCAR Grand national Winston cup racing! Grandstand A about seven rows down from the top off turn four! Get this now, $8.00 tickets those were great seats! Honestly, this is probably more than you really wanted to know but it seemed like and the most part actually when Darrell waltrip arrived with the die guard ride tickets annually started skyrocketing! 76 through about 80 I say this because 71 through 83 84 I was going to races from Pocono to Talladega and anything in between!!!!! I'm retired now!! I could go on and on and on, I used to love the sport!! It's not the same, in the very reason that you wished you had been there back then! (I hope that makes sense) I'm a big Richard Petty fan! Have been since I listened to my first race on the radio 70 wilkesboro 400.... Well the horn section has had it say! THANKS!!!!!

Pretty sure that young lady who was on the parade float before the race, could have been found in a conversion van behind the garage area...With Tim Richmond! 😂👍 As for the race, was happy to see Ol' NB win it 🙏 RIP Neil ✝️ But damn, what bad break for Bobby Allison & Wild Bill! So cool to hear Banjo Mathews working the booth with The GOAT, Ken Squire 💪

*POINT STANDINGS and WINS before the 1983 WORLD 600 (12 of 30):* #22 Bobby Allison (1706pts with 2 wins, GM) #33 Harry Gant (-134 with 1 win, GM) #9 Bill Elliott (-151, Ford) #98 Joe Ruttman (-180, GM) #43 Richard Petty (-185 with 2 wins, GM) #75 Neil Bonnet (-205, GM) #11 Darrell Waltrip (-208 with 4 wins, GM) #90 Dick Brooks (-342, Ford) #44 Terry Labonte (-354, GM) Ron Bouchard (GM #47) was 12th, Buddy Arrington (Dodge #67) was 13th, Dave Marcis (GM #71) was 14th and 1982 best rookie Geoff Bodine (GM #88) was 15th. The Daytona 500 and the Atlanta 500 were won by part-timer Cale Yarborough (GM #28). Drivers listed are the season's current top8, last season's top8 plus the rookie of the year before and whatever race winner that doesn't fit any of those 2 descriptions. Yes, I’m using the unsponsored names of the races. In Charlotte’s case, the Memorial Day race is the World 600 while the later one is the National 500.

Bill and Bobby getting after it only to have someone blow up right in front of them - carnage ensues. During the 84 or 85 season ESPN had a bit that had clips of the races Bill finished 2nd in during a pre-race - this was the last clip they used....sort of implying it was coming to checkers - not 50+ laps to go.....lol. Gotta love a good promotion.

In 1985, the race became the Coca Cola World 600. The following year(1986) It became just the Coca Cola 600. They began sponsoring the race and got the naming rights.

The more race track announcers tell fans to get away from the fence, the more of them run down there. These people, as has been recently documented, do not wish to follow rules. Tell them to scale the damned fence and go running around on the track and they'll go back to their seats. 😂

Per Wikipedia, this aired on the Mizlou Television Network, which was basically a syndicated "ad-hoc" network whose broadcasts were carried on various local stations like the old Hughes Television Network or more recently Jefferson-Pilot (now Raycom) Sports, which carries syndicated college sports broadcasts.
