Action and atmosphere from the opening round of the 1984 Irish Tarmac Championship. Originally produced by Flor Griffin at Cork Video Services (CVS), and presented by Robin Rhodes.
This report was originally uploaded to the excellent Rally Memories channel on KZfaq. It has been recaptured and post-processed using the usual VHSR techniques, in a bid to improve the quality of the footage. Nevertheless, image and sound glitches remain. In particular, one snippet of an early interview had to be spliced because of image break-up, and there is significant sound degradation towards the end of the report.

Ah John Price 19:25 . Knew him back in the 1980s. Seemed to turn up in a different car each year. Great enthusiast, tried his best.

Imagine an Opel, a Vauxhall or a Ford beating a Ferrari today! Also, interesting to hear about a Group 5 Escort. Didn't know that existed. Wonder what's different about it compared to Group 4. Finally, awesome to see an R5 Turbo in one of these, quite an exotic outside of the WRC events :-) (even more so than the Ferrari, mind you!) Too bad it didn't finish. Thanks for another neat upload!

In fairness, most 80's group 4 or group 2 (Sunbeam lotus) rally cars would beat a Ferrari in any decade in Ireland; Don't think Ferrari's were made for muddy Irish lanes.

@@itsnotmeitshim Still, with the same tires, I'd expect the weight distribution of its mid-engine layout to be advantageous. The Sunbeam is of course more compact which definitely helps on these narrow roads. And the best group 4 and 2 contenders were fairly optimized for their purpose, this has to show somehow (not even considering the Stratos or R5 Turbo here).
