Kmart was the place to be! It was where my family and I would go for essentially everything. Back in the 80's, Kmart had clothing, electronics, a pet shop (i.e. goldfish, hamsters), a jewelry corner, an ice cream counter (my favorites being bubble gum, pistachio, and chocolate), a cafeteria (They had the best Salsbury steak with mushroom gravy!), and, of course, my favorite toys around (i.e. G.I. Joe, Transformers, M.A.S.K, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, ThunderCats, and Silverhawks)! Bring Kmart back now! Christmas is here! We need you now!

I think this is the best jingle I have ever heard. It has everything musically in it; half time, double time, meter change, 2 verses and a bridge, a key change, incredible bass playing, awesome vocals and harmonies, catchy melody and lyrics, ALL IN 60 SECONDS! Nobody does that today.

There's a piece of history for you. The Commodore VIC-20 was the first computer Kmart ever sold! That was a new threshold in affordability for personal computers at the time. But by 1984, it was obsolete, having been overtaken by the Commodore 64. Odd to see that Kmart was still selling it (and still advertising it proudly).
@F1JV5 жыл бұрын
Probably...this was a good commercial for them that they ONLY revised with a '84 Olympic tie-in. At that time...Kmart would have had ZERO problems getting ANY merchandise into their stores...they would have done the picking & choosing. I'm sure that they sold the Commodore 64 at its release...since it was a low cost personal computer.

Back when K-Mart was way ahead of Walmart in the game. And almost 40 years later, Walmart is THE Retail King while K-Mart is pretty much now dead. I remember as a kid we'd mostly do our shopping at K-Mart at our local mall. Back then, we usually went to our Walmart once a month. Back then, in our town, Walmart was smaller than K-Mart. I always loved to spend my allowance at K-Mart back in the 1980s. I could always find the coolest toys for a great price. And we also had Kay-Bee Toys in the mall. If I couldn't find something I wanted at K-Mart, you bet I'd be able to find something at Kay-Bee's. I remember our Mall was THE PLACE to hang out at during the eighties. K-Mart was our Anchor store. And we also had a Waldensbooks, Kay-Bee Toys, a Record Shop, JcPenney's, Goody's Clothing, a local restaurant called J's, a couple of shoe stores, an arcade, and a video store. Now, we just have a Rose's, a shoe store, Hibbett's Sports, and a Bath and Body Works. At least J's is still around. It is truly a shell of it's former self.

My late father, who worked for a major forest products company in the Pacific Northwest, used to travel on business trips to Hot Springs, Arkansas on a regular basis to visit the mill operations down there. I remember that he and some colleagues went to a local Walmart there in the '80s to check it out, as it hadn't yet made its way up to our region. Dad must have not been very impressed, because he vowed that he would never set foot in one ever again, and held true to that for the remainder of his life. Meanwhile, even as a middle-class family, we patronized our local Kmart and Sears fairly regularly, as much as we did stores like The Bon Marché, Frederick and Nelson and Nordstrom's back then. It's a shame that of all of those stores, only "Nordy's" is left, and even that is nothing like what I grew up with when it was still a primarily Northwest-oriented concern.

I was probably 10 years old. That Walmart was one of the original, very small designs, without any grocery department. Compared to today's supercenters, it was a speck of a store. And to think, Kmart & Pamida weren't anywhere near as large as that first, small Walmart. Yet, they had most of what we needed. If they didn't, then there were other stores downtown that did.
