Kmart was the place to be! It was where my family and I would go for essentially everything. Back in the 80's, Kmart had clothing, electronics, a pet shop (i.e. goldfish, hamsters), a jewelry corner, an ice cream counter (my favorites being bubble gum, pistachio, and chocolate), a cafeteria (They had the best Salsbury steak with mushroom gravy!), and, of course, my favorite toys around (i.e. G.I. Joe, Transformers, M.A.S.K, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, ThunderCats, and Silverhawks)! Bring Kmart back now! Christmas is here! We need you now!

I think this is the best jingle I have ever heard. It has everything musically in it; half time, double time, meter change, 2 verses and a bridge, a key change, incredible bass playing, awesome vocals and harmonies, catchy melody and lyrics, ALL IN 60 SECONDS! Nobody does that today.

There's a piece of history for you. The Commodore VIC-20 was the first computer Kmart ever sold! That was a new threshold in affordability for personal computers at the time. But by 1984, it was obsolete, having been overtaken by the Commodore 64. Odd to see that Kmart was still selling it (and still advertising it proudly).

Probably...this was a good commercial for them that they ONLY revised with a '84 Olympic tie-in. At that time...Kmart would have had ZERO problems getting ANY merchandise into their stores...they would have done the picking & choosing. I'm sure that they sold the Commodore 64 at its release...since it was a low cost personal computer.

Both are awesome. The C64 only became cheap because CEO Jack Tremal was betting on the price of chips to drop.

Yep The newest game console, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, didn’t came to Kmart until at least 1991 I remembered playing The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past at Kmart on July 15, 1993 while wearing Wrangler jeans and sweeping a beautiful girl (in her beautiful formal gown) off her feet

I'm the same age as the little girl whose daddy is holding her and the mommy put the baseball cap on her head at the end. I grew up going to Kmart. We didn't get Walmart until I was a teenager, and Target always had cooties! Kmart has always been my store, but now there isn't one for hundreds of miles.

Kmart was the local shopping center in my neighborhood. The nearest Walmart was miles away. I was born in '87 so I never heard this jingle but man, it gives you such a sense of fun. That was the aura of the 80s in a nutshell for ya. I was born a generation too late.

ONLINE SHOPPING is DOING HARM to LOCAL TOWNS and LOCAL JOBS ... and, if you have a SMALL BUSINESS wanting to sell online you are now required to follow more GOVERNMENT RED TAPE and CONSUMERS are made to PAY MORE TAXES!! (see LETTER TO THE EDITOR ... LINK below) DON'T BE FOOLED ... these big stores WANT YOU to SHOP ONLINE and they are happy to CLOSE MORE STORES if they can. Why have several hundred stores in the U.S. serving LOCAL COMMUNITIES and provide LOCAL JOBS ... just have two or three WAREHOUSES to do the very same thing! Having NO stores allow businesses to make a lot more profit with less overhead ... but expect HIGHER PRICES with less stores to compete with them. Most of these warehouse jobs can be moved to Mexico for even CHEAPER LABOR costs ... ROBOTS are already doing the work in these warehouses. And think of all that TRASH ("packaging") you toss from ordering online!!! SHOP LOCAL and see what you are buying and help SUPPORT YOUR COMMUNITY and LOCAL JOBS, too. And, to add to this LETTER ... are all those businesses in China that ship to U.S. states also COLLECTING and REPORTING the SALES TAX or are they void of the burden now facing small businesses in the U.S.? www.journaltrib.com/articles/commentary/online-sales-tax-collections-challenged-2/?fbclid=IwAR1CQtNLHmje05-DePJocFoWoR0r-VnymbYyBkiWxjiwtFii5fUT4369rc4

Back when K-Mart was way ahead of Walmart in the game. And almost 40 years later, Walmart is THE Retail King while K-Mart is pretty much now dead. I remember as a kid we'd mostly do our shopping at K-Mart at our local mall. Back then, we usually went to our Walmart once a month. Back then, in our town, Walmart was smaller than K-Mart. I always loved to spend my allowance at K-Mart back in the 1980s. I could always find the coolest toys for a great price. And we also had Kay-Bee Toys in the mall. If I couldn't find something I wanted at K-Mart, you bet I'd be able to find something at Kay-Bee's. I remember our Mall was THE PLACE to hang out at during the eighties. K-Mart was our Anchor store. And we also had a Waldensbooks, Kay-Bee Toys, a Record Shop, JcPenney's, Goody's Clothing, a local restaurant called J's, a couple of shoe stores, an arcade, and a video store. Now, we just have a Rose's, a shoe store, Hibbett's Sports, and a Bath and Body Works. At least J's is still around. It is truly a shell of it's former self.

My late father, who worked for a major forest products company in the Pacific Northwest, used to travel on business trips to Hot Springs, Arkansas on a regular basis to visit the mill operations down there. I remember that he and some colleagues went to a local Walmart there in the '80s to check it out, as it hadn't yet made its way up to our region. Dad must have not been very impressed, because he vowed that he would never set foot in one ever again, and held true to that for the remainder of his life. Meanwhile, even as a middle-class family, we patronized our local Kmart and Sears fairly regularly, as much as we did stores like The Bon Marché, Frederick and Nelson and Nordstrom's back then. It's a shame that of all of those stores, only "Nordy's" is left, and even that is nothing like what I grew up with when it was still a primarily Northwest-oriented concern.

Long before Walmart, my family shopped at Kmart & Pamida. Both were great stores. Then along came Walmart. I remember the first time that I entered Walmart, I was afraid that I might get lost. I was probably 10 years old. That Walmart was one of the original, very small designs, without any grocery department. Compared to today's supercenters, it was a speck of a store. And to think, Kmart & Pamida weren't anywhere near as large as that first, small Walmart. Yet, they had most of what we needed. If they didn't, then there were other stores downtown that did. Oh yeah, the downtown that Walmart killed off.

I miss K Mart. Walmart and Target have never had the same emotional effect. Other stores I miss include: Woolco, TG&Y, along with Howard Brothers. Someone wrote a book about K Mart's 10 big sins. The stores were bad about being out of stock on certain items. Try getting waited on too! Self-checkout counters would have actually helped them. Perhaps they should have put Martha Stewart in charge.

My hometown had K-Mart, Roses, and K-Mart in the 1980s. The town I now live in, it only had a TG&Y, along with a local Department Store downtown. Now K-Mart and TG&Y are now gone. And the town I currently live in has a Walmart. My hometown has Walmart and Roses. But Roses is now where K-Mart used to be. And where Roses was is now a Big Lots.

They were very popular in the 1980s here in the United States. However, Walmart and Target overtook K-Mart in the 1990s, and they could never recover after that. Here in the States, most K-Marts are now gone. There are just a few left.

The last time I went to KMart was during Christmas. I asked where the video games were, and they said they no longer carried them in store and asked me to use the website instead.

We lost our local Kmart in Chambersburg PA on December 1st, 2019....they couldn't even let them have one last Christmas! Kmart is almost gone now, below 200 stores.....where did it all go wrong and how did it come to this?

In my hometown of McMinnville, Tennessee, we lost our K-Mart in May of 2002. It was really sad when it left our Mall that year. A year later, it became a Factory Outlet store. And in 2007, it became a Roses.

K-Mart is the prime example of not resting on laurels. They thought they didn’t need to change anything for years. That gave the competition time to catch up and surpass them.
