I got a bit ancy and probably made a mistake, but I bought a major project. This video was when I first brought it home and cleaned it up. Since then it's looking a whole lot better, but I still have a ways to go. But here's the "New Project". Sorry for the repetition, the cleanup video was a few days later. More to come.

It's great to see a Cutlass SS on the channel. I haven't seen one in a long time.

Well it's not a Cutlass SS it's an SS. I had a 1981 Cutlass SS and thought I would make this 84 look like a 81, but it is going to be more than I want to get into. I believe the Cutlass SS was made in 81, & 82, maybe 83. But in 1984 they went to an SS, look the same except for decals and seat. It was a cool concept with the direct drive, it saved a lot of weight.

I always loved your Polaris Cutlass, it was a great running machine and reliable!

Yeah it was a fun machine. I beat the daylights out of it but kept it running and looking decent. When I saw this one, it brought back those memories, so I thought why not, but I think I opened a can of worms. I've got it pretty much cleaned up and painted, just need to reassemble.

Just picked up a red 83’ SS cutlass. My father owned a red one that is the same color and year when I was growing up as a young kid. It didnt run when I bought it but it didnt take much. just new clutch, carb clean, fuel lines and filter and drained oil and new fresh and she fired right up. and has good compression. Also needed new hyfaxes, and the aluminum track skid had some cracks in it. Also new wear bars. New windshield and throttle block and she is a ripper

Yeah they were pretty cool sleds. Light weight and pretty snappy, they didn't have much suspension, but 4" to 6" was the norm for the day.

@@ohok4775 Yea, they were pretty quick, it was my up north sled in the early 80's. Nice and light and nimble.

I don't have a snowmobile but why do they all have 2 cycle engines? Would a V-twin Predator work or is it to big and heavy? Nice wood pile you have there. The cold won't catch you off guard. Thanks and take care Ken

The main reason is the power to weight ration with 2 strokes being 2-4 or so times the power than a 4 stroke, and much easier to start a 2 stroke at -25° They do make purpose built 4 stroke engines for snowmobiles now though.

Snocrushr explained it well. 2 strokes have been the engine of choice up until recently. All manufactures produce a four-stroke in their lineups. Each has its pros and cons. Thanks for watching Lloyd.
