There were some who thought the '84 defense was better than the '85 defense. If we had better QB play, who knows? We may beat San Francisco in that NFC Championship game after the Bears stunned Washington...

The 85 bears was probably was a little stouter against the run because of Refrigerator Perry. Eric Dickerson ran all over that 84 defense but that 85 defense shut him down in the championship game

@@Tone22845 Agreed. Fridge took Hartenstein's job and Hartenstein was no slouch!!! The one thing that mystified me was the two weaknesses the Bears had on defense. First, in the game thay lost, a weakness was definitely exposed...spread the field and put in a slot guy. If the Bears were in the 46, they had Marshall and Wilson on the line with the front four. Slot guy has the middle of the field open. Ditka told Buddy to play a nickle D becuae they couldn't cover the slot guy. Same with a RB coming out the backfield. Again, in the 46, isolate a RB against an LB, he breaks containment and the field is wide open. Check out the 2nd Packers game and see what Eddie Lee Ivory did. Why teams didn't pick up on that remains a mystery...

@@mbroadnax1 buddy was hard headed. Even with the eagles when buddy left & Bud carson became the eagles DC in 91 that defense became 1 of the best in history because they relied on their front 4 instead buddy Ryan's aggressive blitzing scheme that exposes the defense

WOW! I’ve been hoping to watch this game for years. If I remember correctly, Bears CB Leslie Frazier has an unreal interception in this game. Madden, ‘thru the end of his career, continued to reference Frazier’s INT as the greatest he’d ever seen either on TV or in person. I WOULD attempt to describe Frazier’s in-air, over the receiver, acrobatic thievery, but it’s impossible to do it justice. You are just going to have to watch.

It is interesting on how viewing a football game has changed. When you watch a game now so much info is on the screen like the score, quarter, time left, etc. When you watch a game from this era no info is on the screen. I started watching in the middle of the game and had no idea what the score was or time left. I really wanted that info. I had to wait 23 minutes until CBS finally put the score, quarter, and time on the screen for a commercial break. Over time the telecasts have really changed.

yes certainly you take the modern graphics for granted when you go back and watch older games. but it is a less cluttered and more natural experience when you watch games before that.

no phones and internet to track things in real time back then neither, the only way you could get lead leading statistics back then was the daily newspaper or sportscenter which was fairly new

How slow, is Dave Finzer? It was like he was running in slow motion! No wonder why he's gone in a year! And one more look, at the inevitable ineptitude of Bob Avellini! You gone in a year too Bob!

When Ditka first became coach, Dan Hampton said at the first team meeting, Ditka told the players"give me 3 years, ill have you in the Super Bowl. The bad news is half of you won't be here to see it". Amongst those who were gone were both Finzer and Avellini. Ill never figure out what made Neil Armstrong think Avellini was ever an NFL Qb

@@sukhastings4200 I think you can thank Jack Pardee for this. But then again, I think all Pardee had was Gary Huff and Bobby Douglass in his first year, and a washed up Virgil Carter in his 2nd year of coaching the team. I guess he had no choice but to give Avellini a shot. When Armstrong took over, he had Mike Phipps, but he still stuck with Avellini, then Vince Evans who was wildly inconsistent. Even after Phipps lead the Bears to the playoffs in 1979, he still played Evans the next two seasons. What made the Bears somewhat watchable was the start of their legendary defense. I forgot what year Alan Page came to the Bears, but Buddy Ryan began developing the defnse to the point when it became obvious Armstrong was going to be gone after 1981, Fencik wrote that letter to Halas. The rest is history

Lets not forget to add Bob Thomas, the Bears god-awful FG kicker to that list.. Thomas was AWFUL & terribly un-clutch! Thomas cost the Bears so many games and did so in every imaginable way possible for a bad placekicker to hurt your team.. It's not just his propensity for missing FG's, Thomas missed XP's, stunk at kicking off, couldn't onside kick if his life depended on it. It was Thomas's proficiency for MISSED FG's & his lousy, low-effort kickoffs cost the Bears field position on a regular basis.. I never understood why they stuck with him for so long... if I recall, Parcells & the Giants signed to start the '86 season after an injury to Ali Haji-Sheik. Thomas was cut after a WEEK ONE game in which he missed a late game-tying FG. Hitting that FG would've taken the game into OT... Parcells cut him immediately after the game

@@nurserock77 Yeah, I tried to bring up that point to some guy who was big on showing USFL games. I made some rather saucy comments concerning Vince Evans and he lost his shit! I said the USFL was about Evan's speed and he goes on to tell about his 14 or 15 year career. It's like, the length of your career is moot, what did you do during it. Evans was a back-up for the last 5 years of his NFL career. I also pointed out that at that moment that we were arguing about this, we were watching a USFL game! A league that does not exist anymore! And he sucked in that league too! Thomas kicked for a long time, but he fit right in on a lot of bad teams. But Finzer, Jesus! RUN DUMMY! I can hear my old man screamin it right now! They're off to Arlington Heights now, good riddance! Hard to have an emotional connection to a team that threatens to move every 10 years!

Forrest Gregg. He hated Ditka. He didn't like the Bears. He also promoted questionable play in his players. 1984 is the year the NFL started enforcing natural grass length standards. Lambeau staff used to let the grass grow extra long before the Bears played to suppress Payton.
