San Diego Padres 4 at Detroit Tigers 8, F -- Game 5 started out poorly for the Padres when Mark Thurmond gave up three runs in the first inning. But they managed to rally back and were within one run of the Tigers in the eighth inning when Kirk Gibson came up to bat to face Goose Gossage. Though Gossage had been encouraged to walk Gibson, Gossage decided to pitch to him instead. Gibson responded with a three-run blast that clinched the Series for the Tigers. Sparky Anderson became the first manager to win World Championship titles in both the National and American Leagues.

Thank the media for bitching. You see, on this day the 49ers lost their only game of the season on a Gary Andersen field goal, never mind it was only a single header game and flex scheduling would be 30 years off, it was still "abhorrent" to the mighty media that the World Series would be on during a slate of NFL games. So the next year the World Series was on NBC, it followed an NFL doubleheader. ABC carried the last one to date (game six in 87)

@aDg 2k18 At a time back then when the Red Wings and Hockeytown were the hottest things going they built Comerica and Ford Field and ever since the Tigers and the Lions have been pretty much crap. You began to see signs saying "For God sakes please don't build a new hockey arena" figuring it would just be a curse to the Red Wings as well. Well they've since built new facilities for all of the teams and everybody's crap. As a loyal fan I still remain hopeful And I couldn't agree more with everything in your comment. Growing up as a Tigers fan, I, too miss Tiger Stadium, too, Adam. But one of the definitive reasons Tiger Stadium had to go was on the screen when Parrish homered in the seventh inning. They showed the Tiger clubhouse celebrating. It was a cramped clubhouse without much room. As a sports writer in the 1970s, I knew that clubhouse. The dugouts were small and cramped. The toughest thing for me is that I've gotten used to Comerica Park. It's actually a fair park for both hitters and pitchers.

I just have to point out Fred J aminson's comment in this thread as being the biggest piece of shit in America. Having said that... I covered the Tigers for a radio station there in 1987, operated the scoreboard in 1997, and played in an exhibition baseball game there in 2001 just before it closed as part of Detroit's 300th anniversary. It may not have been the greatest HR in World Series history, but all things considered, it was by far the most satisfying. The media hype surrounding the Padres after they fluked their way into the playoffs and pulled an even bigger fluke over the Cubs, was insufferable. Especially the ex Yankees who wouldn't STFU about Steinbrenner, (who Nettles out and out accused of murdering Thurman Munson.) Goose refusing to walk Gibson, and Sparky laughing at the Padres for that debacle was as satisfying as Bautista's bat flip.

I remember this game like it was yesterday. I was twelve years old and the game aired on a Sunday afternoon. I was a Dodger fan, so I didn't really care who won...at first. However, as the series progressed, I started rooting for the Padres. Well, they got thumped! Not only in this game, but in Game 3 and Game 4. They didn't get out of Tiger Stadium alive! Watching this game again, I forgot how intense stadium fans were back then. The Padres in those brown and yellow uniforms, appeared soft in that environment. The uniforms were nice, mind you, but they just seemed like a soft West Cost team going up against a hardnose and hungry Midwestern team. Also, I love how the game was played back then. A lot more hits and stolen bases, as opposed to home runs and strike outs....Bring back stirrups and high socks PLEASE!!!

I spent many a ballgame at Tiger Stadium in the '60s. Back then, my grandmother from Germany, who immigrated to Detroit in 1949 after the war, became a Tiger fan and took me to so many games, I can't remember them all. Tiger Stadium was such a beautiful ballpark, all in forest green, and box seats back then were $3. Reserved seats, $2. Vin Scully, the master of silence during a big moment, didn't say a word for more than a minute and a half after Kirk Gibson's eighth-inning homer. And when he did, he commented about the discussion at the pitcher's mound over whether to intentionally walk Gibson or pitch to him. We all miss Vin. He was truly a poet.

I was there. Tore up the field after Larry Herndon caught the last out. It started raining almost immediately after the catch. I just instinctively went down on the field without even asking my Uncle. I grabbed about 4 feet of sod by a foot and folded it up and there was no security that confronted me. On the way to the car a lady asked for some of it, so I tore off a good 18 inches and gave it to her. The rest of it, I planted in my backyard. I was almost 13 years old.

It was so rare we did anything as a family as our father was out of the picture. As teens my brother's and I were so lost and this was the greatest escape of our youth. I dont think any of us realized for years how lucky we were that our mom (who ordered tickets through the Free Press) had ordered not one set but tickets for two games. Gibson was just a beast and I remember when he hit his second home run in the eighth we thought the upper deck was going to come down on us the stadium was shaking that much😮😮😮... 😅😅😅! Loved Vin Scully's call of the game and Gibson's home run off Gossage. Classic. But it also reminds of the great days of Ernie Harwell on the local Detroit radio broadcast. Ernie is definitely on the Mt. Rushmore of broadcasters in my book. IMO he's the best to ever do it.

Wiggins batted .364, so he did his job. And it didn't help that McReynolds was hurt. But yes, Martinez & Brown were horrid. But OTOH, this was my Tigers' year, and I doubt the Cubs would have beaten them, though it might have been a better series.

So Alan Trammell is a Hall of Famer, but you can’t really have Trammell in the Hall of Fame without Lou Whitaker right beside him. They came into the majors at the same time, played more games as the middle infield than any one else in baseball history, they won Gold Gloves together, had almost identical career hitting stats (both over 2,300 hits), were both a part of this powerhouse World Series champion team and almost retired at the same time, all the while playing 20 year careers for the same team. If Trammell is in the Hall of Fame, Sweet Lou should be too.

I watched this year of Tiger Baseball from start to end. I was born in 68 a few weeks after that WS. my dad died in july of 84 so I remember that year quite well. Went to a game a few weeks later when we went back home to Detroit after the funeral just to get away, and watched Lance Parrish park one on the lumberyard across the street from the park. One of my most vivid memories from when I was a kid.

I was a youngster who saw the Royals win in 1985 and was so happy to see us win again in 2015, but this was after two decades plus of 90 plus losses and such a debacle and futility. I felt like nothing was ever going to happen, or nothing would ever turn the tide. So, my thought is, you never know. Baseball can be a strange game. Things change.

@1.42.00 I can hear the upper bleachers in center field with one their creatively insane and profane chants. It starts out with one side yelling, "Less Filling!". Then the other side responds, "Tastes Great!". It goes like this back and forth like that a few times, then on cue it switches to, "F...You!" , "Eat S,,t!" Oh those upper deck "bleacher creatures" at Tiger Stadium. When things really got rockin' loud. they would stomp their feet, which made the whole stadium rumble and the upper deck centerfield camera shake. The sound of the rumbling floor would bounce out of the lower deck bleachers and project onto the field.
