Carlton Fisk in 1985 at the age of 37 was the White Sox regular catcher and he hit 37 home runs, 107 RBI, and amazingly stole 17 bases. Then, five & six seasons later in 1990 & 1991, Fisk was still the White Sox regular catcher. He hit 18 home runs in each of those seasons at the tender ages of 42 & 43. Awesome ball player! Inducted into the MLB HOF in 2000.

"Gotta send Meachum to stay out of the double play", funny how The Yankees ended up doubling into a double play. Only Meachum, and Dale Berra could pull off such a feat! How these two made it to the majors, I'll never know. But still, GREAT childhood memories of being a 9 year old rooting on The Yankees with my father! Edit: 2:14:24 "And I have no idea what Billy Martin is thinking except maybe murder" HAHAHA! Vin Scully THE GOAT OF ALL Announcers!

I was 11 when I watched this game...also rooting for the Yankees. It was one of the best baseball games I ever watched, and I had mad respect for Fisk making that double play even though it probably caused the Yankees to lose. Funny how that play stuck with me 40 years later that I went on a search for it, and found this video.

It's amazing to think that with 2 months left at the time after his first at bat, Mattingly will hit 22 more HR's and knock in 63 more runs!!! MVP85!! bdog
@millypoo7713
@millypoo7713 3 жыл бұрын
But the reason he was able to drive in that many runs is because of Rickey Henderson as the Yankees lead-off hitter. In 1985... Henderson hit .314 with 99 walks, a .419 on base pct., 80 steals in 90 attempts, and scored an incredible 146 runs in 143 games played. Without Henderson, there's no way Mattingly drives in that many runs. Rickey got overlooked for the MVP and it really could have gone to either player. It also could have gone to George Brett who hit .335 with 30 HR & 112 RBI for a mediocre hitting KC team. The eventual '85 WS Champion Royals won their division by just 1 game over the Angels that season. It's easy to see that without Brett, the Royals don't win their division. Meanwhile, the Yankees finished 2nd yet a NY player was still voted as MVP despite the Yankees not even making the playoffs. Mattingly was great, but Rickey Henderson was just as extraordinary as was George Brett. It could have gone to any one of those 3 players. I personally feel Brett should have won it because his team made the playoffs, and he had a lot less help in the lineup compared to Mattingly. As a matter of fact, the Royals were second to last in runs scored in the AL in 1985 with 687. Meanwhile, the Yankees led the AL with 839 runs scored. Again, Brett did not have the players around him the same caliber that Mattingly did.
@bdog1323
@bdog1323 3 жыл бұрын
@@millypoo7713 Of course, that's why it's still a team sport. You can even say that Henderson wouldn't have scored as many runs if it weren't for Mattingly's bat that year. It's a thread that can be pulled many times. Did A-Rod deserve MVP twice in Texas for a last place team? Besides, AL east was a beast during this time & if not for a bad call in the world series in '85 Cards might have won. But could've, would've, should've isn't the history we know. But during this time Mattingly was such a sweet swing to watch.

If the Yankees pull this game out in extras I wonder if the tagging 2 runners out at home is still remembered the way it is. The Yanks almost won this game on a miraculous comeback that could have knocked the odd double play off the front page. I get the sense this play symbolized Yankee futility during the 80s and yet 85 was their best year during this postseason drought of 82-94. If they win this game in dramatic fashion, well I guess then the game would just have been remembered for both the double tagout and the finish then. It's just so taylor-made for every blooper reel in the 80s if nothing else.

Vin Scully: There's two men at third! The throw to the plate is in plenty of time to get ONE and get TWO! CAN YOU BELIEVE IT? The Yankees base running blunder, and Carlton Fisk heads up tagging 2 guys out back to back, then popping up quick, chewing his gum, checking on Henderson, the remaining baserunner. Can't help but laugh at whole thing. When the runners held up to see if the ball would be caught or not, they really should have been held up, therefore leaving Rickey on first base with a 400 foot single. But at least there would have been no one out. Maybe the 1st runner try to score, but not Berra, the 2nd runner. Lol. Poor Rickey, standing on 2nd base, thinking "I should have had 2 rbi's."

This may be the WORST baserunning by ALL offensive players ever. According to the boxscore, Rickey Henderson was credited with a single on this play. RICKEY HENDERSON! On a ball off the wall. I means he went BACK to first base and only advanced on the throw. This is Rickey fucking Henderson we're talking about. He should have been running for a double regardless of the play in front of him. He easily beats it even if the relay throw goes to second. And when the first base coach saw the clusterfuck going on around second base, he should have waved Rickey to second if for no other reason than to try to draw the throw there to allow 2 runs to score. So in just one hit, THREE players made horrendous baserunning decisions.

No offense, but how many times do people like you have to be told? Baseball is a business. Renovations are not cheap! Fenway and Wrigley are still around, because their owners can afford the renovations, and they have butts in seats all season long (until 2020). Yankee Stadium was renovated once, it was not going to be renovated a second time. Too many issues. Remember the beam that fell from the upper deck, and crashed into the seats below, back in 1998? The concrete was eroding from within. The place was too cramped, especially in the upper deck. The corridors were too narrow, which made it difficult to get to and from the bathrooms, and getting in and out of the stadium with sellout crowds took forever. They needed a new ballpark in order to be able to have modern amenities, and better crowd control. Getting in and out of the new ballpark is a breeze, compared to the old one. By 2008, it was time for a new ballpark, the old one, sadly, had to go. Circle of life.
@TheVCRTimeMachine
@TheVCRTimeMachine 3 жыл бұрын
@@mcorivervsaf Wrigley Field literally had sections of concrete rotting and falling into the lower deck. They had to install netting under the upper deck to catch the concrete until they could get approval for renovations. ALL the concrete in the lower and upper decks was removed and replaced. The only thing original to the park now is the outside facade, the steel skeleton of the stands, and the brick outfield wall. Too suggest that it was cheaper to build a new ballpark compared to a renovation of the old Yankee stadium is absurd. They could have gutted the stands again just like they did in the 1970s. The new ballpark is a sanitized, modernized, copy of the original. The Yankees had the money and the ability to do what they did in Fenway and Wrigley which are both older and had undergone numerous renovations in the past. To suggest the Yankees couldn't do renovations again, because they had done it once before is silly.
@mcorivervsaf
@mcorivervsaf 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheVCRTimeMachine I hate to be the one to tell you this, but you’re wrong. Ballparks are not built to last forever. If they were, would you want to watch a Yankee game at the Polo Grounds, with its ridiculous dimensions? I’ll bet not. You might want to take a look around Major League Baseball as to why Yankee Stadium had to be replaced. It was turning into an outdated, crumbling relic of the past. Part of owning a ballpark, whether it be the team, or the city, county, or the state, is maintaining infrastructure. The older a ballpark gets, the more expensive it is to maintain. You can’t just throw money at renovations, unless the cost is reasonable. You think this was some knee-jerk reaction to the rest of MLB getting new stadiums? Yankee Stadium was falling apart internally, and no amount of renovation work was going to save it. The 1974-75 renovations allowed it to last until 2008. The beam collapse in ‘98 was a bad omen, and a reminder: They needed a new ballpark. You can only renovate a place enough to the point where it becomes outmoded, and that’s what happened. Yes, it had lots of history, and great moments for fans, but what do you think happened to Tiger Stadium, and Comiskey Park, when they became aged and outmoded? They got replaced with newer parks, and better amenities for fans. Fenway, Wrigley, & Dodger Stadium, are the few exceptions, they are EXEMPT for now, but what about 20 years from now? Will the owners of those ballparks be able to pony up the dough for more renovations? We’ll find out then. Guess what? Sometimes, in order to move forward, you have to build something completely new to replace the old. Welcome to reality. It’s called PROGRESS. Move on.

Wasn’t in regular rotation but it would happen on occasion. Pretty sure they had a Dodgers-Cubs game on a Friday night a couple of weeks after this.

believe in the summer months when it was slow, they had some friday night games..also 8/2/85, the same night Delta plane crash in Dallas, which dominated the news

@@AskWlat I believe there was also a Dodgers/Cubs Friday Night Game was in 1986 with a young Jamie Moyer pitching in that game.
