The Raiders used him very wisely. He was simply a "base down" player used to stuff the run. Extremely effective. On passing downs he came out. During that era, I'm surprised that NFL clubs did not try other smaller NTs at linebacker.

the two teams played the year before in Chicago and that's exactly what happened. All of the Raider QB's were brutally knocked out of the game and Jim McMahon had a lacerated kidney that almost ended his career. The doctor wanted to remove the kidney and McMahon told him not to and lucky for him it healed on its own and he kept playing another 5 years.

Just amazing he played for that long after the Raiders damaged his kidney in 1984. The rule was at the time according to McMahon that players weren't allowed to play in the NFL with only one kidney, that's why he told the doctor not to take it out because there were no gauranteed contracts then and it was his livelihood. The guy was crazy but knew his body and gave the fans some great football.

We were all looking forward to Raiders vs Bears Super-Duper Bowl XX in 85' in what promised to be a barbed-wire clash featuring the roughest and toughest players in the NFL. Unfortunately, the Raiders were also looking forward and past the Patriots who stunned us all with their underdog win. Not being able to rely on an injured Plunkett proved to be a huge disadvantage. And thus ended the greatness era of the Raiders that started in 1967. From '67-85 only missed the playoffs in '71, '78, '79, '81, only 1 losing season in '81, 11 league or conference championship appearences, 4 super bowl appearances and 3 wins. Since then, playoff appearences in '90, '91, '93' 2000, 2001, 2002, 2016, and 2021. An AFC title in 2002 I'll grant but an afterthought to that crushing SB37 loss.

AL Davis was calling the shots and had given Wilson a huge contract a year earlier so he was going to live or die with Wilson. Plunkett would of been playing but he got knocked out for the season by the 49ers a month before this game.

@@mikemoxley2989 yeah either did I until someone mentioned it on one of my videos about the big contract. The guy said that Wilson was offered a lot of money from the USFL which was going at that time and trying to compete with the NFL so sounded right to me. Also Rusty Hilger was the backup since Plunkett was out so probably wouldn't have made much difference in the game if Wilson had been benched.

The Raiders made so many mistakes in this game, many of them completely unforced. Still, if Williams makes that 4th down catch w/ less than a minute left he most likely scores untouched and ties the game at 27.

Jesus, Al Davis. You need a frigging QB more than you needed Bo Jackson. What the actual hell? Just go get Steve Young and you’re neck and neck with Elway for the rest of the decade and likely for much longer. He’s right there in your backyard! I admit that getting Young from the USFL probably wasn’t that simple though.

yep totally agree. Patriots did the Raiders a favor and probably spared them a loss in the Super Bowl. Raiders and Bears did play the year before and it was a close game, with 3 QB's getting hurt.

What an ugly, mistake filled game. The AFC was so bad in the 1980s and this is a reminder of it. I mean Raiders Pass Catchers cant even run their routes properly nor hold on to the ball. I mention all of this because I watched my first Super Bowl as an 8 year kid 2 weeks later and as the Patriots got smashed by 31 points, I wondered how they even got there. Now I know.

yep Wilson had great mechanics but was not a leader and folded when he was under pressure. Plunkett and Stabler got better when they were under pressure that's why they won and Wilson didn't. AL Davis was obsessed with the guy for some unknown reason and kept him around for 7 years and the more he played the worse the team got.

@@minnesotavaughn6930 those are good points. the two special teams fumbles led to 14 points so one could say those were worse than anything Wilson did. Raiders didn't score any points in the second half and only lost by 7 so seems like with a good QB they could have overcame those special teams mistakes and still won the game.
