Another very corroded penny from a bag, this one turned out to be a 1985 penny. It probably has not looked this good since 1985.

What's in the cocktail you used to clean that coin? And it's there even a she way to clean collectors coins without damage to the value? I've got a couple Roman coins that you wouldn't know were just to look at them, except I have a few others that came with them, would really like to clean them to see if maybe they're a different denomination or depiction. . .

But you know doing this devalues the coin right

Yeah but it was not worth anything to begin with, if I recall correctly, I pried this off the sidewalk.

With some hard work and elbow grease you too can make a penny worth a cent.

It looked like you were using ketchsup and mustard.

Each color is a different grit of the various compounds, but it does give the appearance of ketchup and mustard!

Great demo! I have some ugly looking corroded copper medallions that would definitely benefit from this treatment. I saw your earlier response and am wondering what the actual grits are. Thanks!

Id have to check each one, I want to say the final one is around 200,000 and I work up to that from maybe around a 10-15,000 depending on how dirty/corroded the surface is, I want to take off as thin of a layer as I can get away with so the detail of the coin still pops out and is crisp, the lower the grit, the more detail I'll lose.

@@relaxingrestoration6294 You did a beautiful job. It looked more like jewelry than a coin. Thanks for the information. It is much appreciated. Your craftsmanship is awesome.

1985 is after pennies switched to zinc. Why not restore a penny worth more?

I was more just cleaning it because it was dirty!

What are you using for polish? Thanks.
@relaxingrestoration6294 Жыл бұрын
Diamond compound and occasionally cream based polishes or cleaners if stuff is really stuck to the surface.
@@relaxingrestoration6294Can you tell us the EXACT compounds and grit, as well as where we might buy them??
@soonerfabrication404411 ай бұрын
Ahh you ruined the value of the penny, now it's only worth half a cent

I think I have a half penny somewhere that's junk, I should try restoring that at some point!

I would not send this to be graded, it had one penny's value to begin with in its condition and it still has that same value now.

Thought it was not good to clean a coin.
@relaxingrestoration62948 ай бұрын
If it's a rare or valuable coin then you should not clean it, that is correct. I do not clean valuable coins.

The proof is in his hairline that this is defy with the coin that's obviously been cleaned because look at a normal penny and look at the hairline
@relaxingrestoration62949 ай бұрын
Yes I am sure an uncirculated example would have crisper details, but if that were the condition I would not have cleaned it.

Yes the coin is nice and shiny but by doing what you did, if the coin was valuable whatsoever, you actively destroyed any value of the coin we had. YOU NEVER CLEAN OR POLISH COINS, IT DESTROYS ITS VALUE ON THE SPOT! Now if this was done just simply to make a coin shiny and show it can be done, that's one thing, but if you have a valuable coin you do not want to ever do this to it because all the value is instantly taken away.
@relaxingrestoration62948 ай бұрын
I only clean junk coins for that reason.
@craigsult34168 ай бұрын
@@relaxingrestoration6294 I'm very glad to hear that. I only bring it up because I have seen very valuable coins be reduced to pennies in value because someone thought it was a good idea to clean them.
