A long term project of ours, the 1985 Subaru Brat GL.
We found this Brat in 2011 near the town of North Bend, WA.
The original EA81 engine had thrown a rod, after 369000 miles, (and most likely some neglect from the P.O.) and needed a new engine donor.
Luckily, Dad had a spare EA81 engine from a 1982 Subaru Wagon, it only needed to be rebuilt.
We had the Engine prepped for rebuild; heads resurfaced, cylinders bored up, new 0.50 over stock size pistons, new camshaft, new bearings, etc.
We assembled the Engine and Started the car for the First time.
This Brat still uses the original Hitachi Carburetor.
The CV axles were replaced along with the Brakes.
You can hear the EA81 Boxer Engine Sound as we cruise the Brat around...
Also shows some of the visual changes that happened over the years...
Hanging out at the 2012 West Coast Subaru Show (WCSS) and hanging out with others that have cool old cars...
More of this Brat and other Classic cars to come.
I do not own rights to the brands shown in the film, however they are my belongings and can be used as I please.
Some general information about the Subaru Brat if you would like to know:
The name BRAT is an acronym from Subaru, it means Bi-Drive Recreational All-Terrain Transporter.
Our '85 is a Second Generation Brat, there were only two generations.
The First Generation Brat was introduced in 1978, it was powered by the EA71 Engine and had Single Range 4WD. The EA71 Engine is a 1600cc (1.6L) Boxer Engine.
1981 marked the End of Production for the First Generation Brat.
For the last year of the 1st Generation Brat ('81) it was available with the EA81 Engine and Dual Range 4WD on GL trim models.
The EA81 Engine is a 1800cc (1.8L) Boxer Engine.
1982 was the first year of the 2nd GEN Brat, all 2nd GEN Brats use a variant of the EA81 Engine. The GL trim model 2nd GEN Brats were available with Subaru's version of T-Tops, called "Fun Tops" or "Twin Halo Moon Roofs". The GL model also came with Dual Range 4WD. The DL trim model 2nd GEN Brats did not have the Fun Tops, and had Single Range 4WD.
All Manual Transmission Brats were 4 Speeds. There was also an optional Automatic Transmission for the Brat; it was a 3 Speed AT with Single Range Push Button 4WD.
1985 was the last year that the Brat was offered with the "Jump Seats" in the Bed, as our Brat has. These Rearward facing Seats in the Bed helped Subaru dodge the "Chicken Tax" that was placed on all Imported Pickup Trucks to the United States. Technically, the Brat was a Four Seater Passenger Vehicle, and not Licensed as a Truck. The United States was the only place that received the Jump Seats because of this...
1986 and 1987 were the final years of the Brat being sold in the United States, and did not have Jump Seats. These Brats are Licensed as Two Seater Trucks.
In other parts of the World, the Subaru Brat Pickup was sold under different names:
In Australia it was known as the Brumby or sometimes the Shifter.
I've heard that the "Shifter" was the only Brat variant that came without 4WD (a FWD ONLY variant).
In the United Kingdom it was called the 284 or sometimes the MV.
Some regions called it the Targa or simply the Subaru Pickup Truck.
Whatever name it wore, the Brat was only exported from Japan, and was not available in their Japanese market. (JDM)

As someone who just did headgaskets on their 86 brat I'm shocked you found a shop that was willing to machine the block etc. I'm in new england and noone here is willing to touch one of these motors. Are you in the Subaru Brat Owners group on facebook? Would strongly recommend joining if not. I've been there 2 and a half years since I bought my brat. The info you have rebuilding this car could help a lot of people! Was also crazy seeing a new waterpump considering how rare they've become lately...
@creativelivingnorthwest
@creativelivingnorthwest 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks @Branden It helps that this engine was built in 2012, when parts were still more plentiful. The shop that did the machine work is owned by an old friend of our family that specializes in VW engines, but works on all kinds of engines etc. I replaced a Water Pump about two years ago on a Brat, and was still able to buy them at Napa at that time... although I'm not sure what the current market is like on those. I'm aware that the Oil Pumps are no longer available however, luckily the original was in good condition and I have spare pumps in the wings. I'm a member on the Brat Owners forum on Facebook, as well as all the other ones; 4x140 or GTFO, Old School Subaru, Subaru Brat USA, Subaru L Series, Brat Parts and Accessories, Vintage Subaru Parts and Connection, PNW Old School Subaru, Subaru Loyale, 4x140 PCD Wheels, and the Brat For Sale Community. Not to mention the OG USMB Forum. I give my input here and there where my knowledge is useful, and ask my own questions and post my own pictures from time to time. @@canalwaysgetmorepets Projects are never really "finished". If they are the Enkei 3F Mesh then it sounds familiar. I have a set of those myself that have been worn by my '86 Dual Range Wagon. They are great wheels but currently mine need new tires so they are resting in the wings for the future.

@creativelivingnorthwest
@creativelivingnorthwest 2 жыл бұрын
@@canalwaysgetmorepets I had to do research on what the wheels were called when I bought my set back around 2013. Most people confuse them with the 92's that are more common. The difference is that the 3F's have a "step" forward on the golden lace area so they have more of a factory offset than the lower offset 92's. Everyone wanted the Compe 8 Wheels in the 4x140 back then, so these wheels are actually harder to find than some of the other 4x140 Enkeis out there. Can relate with the priorities, my wagon is on steel wheels with city slicker tires. Function over form, mileage over looks.

@@creativelivingnorthwest the filter/separator under the hood and exhaust from cylinder heads back (so all of it...). Can't get a new Y pipe here in time so going to just try to find all good used parts.
@creativelivingnorthwest
@creativelivingnorthwest Жыл бұрын
@@ryanalder9691 Luckily, any EA81 or EA82 Y-Pipe will bolt up to the engine, it just depends on if the ASV spacers are still connected to the bottom of the heads how much room/ hanging header will be involved. So any hatchback, sedan, coupe, wagon, or Brat from the 2nd or 3rd generation should get you a Y-Pipe you can use. Then it is just a matter of routing the exhaust out the back with piping. I wonder how much it would be for an exhaust shop to just fabricate the whole thing?... As far as the filter under the hood... there are multiple... the fuel filter? air filter? charcoal canister - for the fuel system?
@ryanalder9691
@ryanalder9691 Жыл бұрын
@@creativelivingnorthwest , the fuel filter/separator, the one with 3 connections, one being a return to tank for vapor; I figure i could use a regular 2 connection fuel filter for winter and try to track down the discontinued part. Going to call some exhaust shops tomorrow but seems a lot do not want to deal with the Y pipe/catalytic converter. Mine does still have the blocks off of the cylinder heads for catalyst air.
@creativelivingnorthwest
@creativelivingnorthwest Жыл бұрын
@@ryanalder9691 I looked up "3 way fuel filter" on Google and came up with multiple results. Looks like a metal version, albeit in a slightly different layout than the factory unit. You could probably order it online or pick one up at an auto parts store locally. If you do go the route of having an exhaust shop fabricate the y-pipe header and rest of the exhaust, maybe they would be more inclined to do the job if you chose not to incorporate the catalytic converter. (Probably the tricky part they are wanting to avoid.) I'm not sure if you have emissions testing in Nebraska? Here in WA state we no longer have to test for emissions so a catalytic converter is not necessary. If I had the option to make a new header for one of these old subarus I'd have one made without the cat

I have a question about your description. You stated that they came without jump seats in the last two years of production. Is that because the chicken tax was lifted?
@creativelivingnorthwest
@creativelivingnorthwest Жыл бұрын
@nova 69 The chicken tax is still going to this present date, it started in 1964. I'm not sure why they stopped having jump seats for the 1986 and 1987 year Brats (the last two years of their production in the USA.) However the rest of the world never had Jump Seats in their versions of the Brat. Perhaps Subaru decided it was no longer necessary, as the run was coming to an end in the USA. Or they noticed how most people cut out the Jump Seats anyway in favor of using the whole bed as a cargo space, and wanted to save recourses from going to waste. From what I can tell, the original MSRP increased about $800 right after the Jump Seats were removed in 1986... So Subaru just decided to charge more for the Brats that did not have Jump Seats to offset the Chicken Tax that they were now paying for the then technically Pickup trucks, and no longer passenger vehicles. I own Brats from both the Jump Seat era, 1985 and before, and the non Jump Seat era, a 1986. The 1986 is registered as a Pickup Truck, and lists 2 occupants max on the door jam vin tag. The 1985 and older Brats are registered as passenger vehicles and has 4 occupants max on the door jam tag.

Ah yeah, I've seen that one and do like it. That is a really rare Subaru to find in the wild... It's an early 2nd Gen Hatchback with the 3rd Eye in the grill! I've only ever seen a couple of those before, and know why the guy that owns it went through what he did for it. There is something about these old Subarus! One of my daily drivers is a 2nd gen hatchback Standard edition, 4 speed FWD only with no options. As basic of a model as they offered, and it is great
