This 1985 TWA commercial has a catchy jingle and is one minuet long, most commercial are 30 seconds. Lovely shots of the crew, JFK, and 747s. "Leading the way, TWA" The ad agency was Ogilvy & Mather.

When Delta bought or rescued Pan Am (not sure of the exact structure of the connection), Delta could have run its international service under the Pan Am brand, so Delta would be national, and Pan Am would do the international flights. Not sure if this would work, but it would capitalize on both company's strengths.

At nearly one full minute in length, this particular version of the 'Leading the Way' commercial is unique in that it aired only a handful of times, the first being on January 20th, 1985 during Super Bowl XIX (another, shorter version subsequently aired more frequently throughout the rest of that spring). Designed by the Ogilvy & Mather ad agency in conjunction with Stew Long, TWA's Senior VP for Marketing and Sales, the slogan 'Leading the Way' - with its television, radio and print ad variants - replaced the previous slogan 'You're Going to Like Us'. This minute-long Super Bowl commercial was the new slogan's debut. Alas, by September 1985 the commercial had been shelved by Erv Kaufman, TWA's new VP of Marketing and Advertising, who was never a fan of airline commercials featuring music and singers which he felt had saturated the market for airline advertisements. While he was correct that airline commercials in the 70s and early 80s did indeed feature a chorus of singers, virtually all of them had folk singers (including the 'You're Going to Like Us' commercials). When heard by modern-day audiences, those commercials do not age well, as they have more of a hackneyed vibe to them. "Leading the Way" singing vocals, by contrast, have a more soulful, gospel vibe which gives the 'Leading the Way' commercial a more contemporary feel.
@scottnichols36853 жыл бұрын
By the end of 1985, TWA’s DNA was being destroyed by Icahn, and this catchy campaign was a casualty. Erv Kaufman was one of the many that Icahn’s regime brought in to create a “new” TWA...very sad.
@compazine3 жыл бұрын
@@scottnichols3685 You're absolutely correct. The slipshod way in which Icahn went about his (mis)management of TWA enabled those like Kaufman, who really had a tin ear for advertising. The ads sponsored by Kaufman were stripped of all music and contained only pertinent information like routes and pricing, information which Kaufman believed was the only thing TWA's potential-customer audience wanted to hear. To see how wrong Kaufman was about this, you need only look 4 years later to British Airways' popular "Globe/Face" commercial designed by Saatchi & Saatchi. Just as TWA's 'Leading the Way' commercial was innovative with its use of soulful, R&B-style vocals at a time when mostly folk-style singing dominated the industry, British Airways was innovative with its use of opera-style vocals -- clearly demonstrating the emotional power that music with innovative singing has towards a potential customer audience.

I flew a TWA flight from Tampa to St. Louis back in 1983. Our plane was a 707. As we pushed away from the gate the veteran captain announced that it was the last day of service for the 707’s which were to be retired from the TWA fleet the next day. I could hear the pride and emotion in his voice as he knew how that aircraft revolutionized air travel and now was passing into aviation history. Bill Allen, CEO of Boeing had bet the farm developing the 707 and if it did not succeed the company would likely fail. A great history of this is covered in the book “Empire, The Life, Legend and Madness of Howard Hughes.” Hughes owned TWA then and nearly bankrupted it by buying the fleet of new 707’s from Boeing. He too bet the farm on the 707. The rest is history. Bill Allen and Hughes changed the world and became aviation legends. I loved that airline. I will never forget that Tampa flight. I still have my TWA Ambassador Club Card.
@scottnichols36853 жыл бұрын
BS. It was Pan Am’s order that saved Boeing. Hughes’ madness nearly drove TWA to extinction before he departed the scene. TWA couldn’t pay for its initial order, and was forced to operate with only one 707 for months.
@stephens71072 жыл бұрын
@@scottnichols3685 I stand corrected, you are right. Pan Am's were the first orders for the 707 in '55. TWA's were in '56 and '57. Been 35 years since I read the book. I edited my comment.

Keep hold of the TWA ambassador Club Card. It will be worth something in the future. That or hold on to it. There's always a one in a million chances that the impossible happens and TWA returns and it's brand is released from American Airlines. Even though that is most definitely unlikely, you never know. You can still fly TWA a/c. Under the current skd, Delta is flying many ex-TWA 757's from JFK to the west coast. SAN, SFO, SEA, LAS and I think PDX. I see the SEA flight pass over my house [Buffalo, NY} almost everyday depending on winds aloft. This week, most of the cities listed here have gone well north of their usual routing [over Buffalo] due to winds which makes my day better. Also, Delta is also flying ex-TWA +/- 20 B717's [not for long]. I was fortunate enough to fly the 747 from STLHNL and then the return from HNLSTLJFK. I wanted to sit in the first row in hopes to catch the forward view. I didn't have enough seniority and got "bumped" upstairs. Gee, what a shame that was. haha Did you all know that DHL still flies 4 ex-TWA 767-231's? I'm am going to be really sad when Delta terminates the ex-TWA 757's and 717's.
