Never forget watching this in early hours of the morning back in 1985 with my mum, I was 15yrs old, it was just one of those moments you never forget.

The frames were won in this order: 1-0 to Steve Davis, 2-0, 3-0, 4-0, 5-0, 6-0, 7-0, 8-0, 8-1,9-1, 9-2, 9-3, 9-4, 9-5, 9-6, 9-7, 9-8, 10-8, 11-8, 11-9, 11-10, 11-11, 12-11 Steve Davis, 13-11, 14-11, 14-12, 15-12, 15-13, 15-14, 15-15, 16-15 Steve Davis, 17-15, 17-16, 17-17 and finally 17-18 in favour of Dennis Taylor. When the final black was potted by Taylor at the end of the final frame it was the only time he had led in frames during the entire match which was at the most important time.

Still amazing to watch 36 years later. Amazing comeback by Dennis, considering he was so far behind in the early session. The most famous snooker final in history.

Wow! 1985 is a different era, Slower table, thicker nap, probably different balls and No miss rule. But the human emotions are the same. A classic match that is part of the history and evolution of the game of snooker. Steve Davis and Dennis Taylor are part of it and represent all that is beautiful in the game and inspired generations.

Amazing to think Dennis Taylor was eight years younger than what Ronnie O'Sullivan is now when he won this. He looked about 50 even then!

What a moment this was. I was allowed to stay up to watch it, I was 7. Absolute scenes! And those glasses were epic.

I was 16 years of age. Sitting at home with my Mum and Dad watching this amazing snooker match was one of THE most memorable sporting events of the 20th Century.

It's the 'miss' rule that changes the game...multiple times that younger/contemporary viewers would think "that's a miss", and in many ways that would have changed the course of this frame. Having said which, as if life, we only play the cards that we're dealt, so - so be it! I remember watching this as a 14yo lad, it was absolutely magic.

I think this final frame still holds the record for the biggest watching T.V audience after midnight. 18 million.. I felt for Steve. Most people didn’t like him, very usual for us Brits who have an aversion to winners. Yes, it was an amazing recovery from Dennis, but incredibly, Davis was never behind in the whole match until this. And is anyone going to deny that Dennis had the purest of luck during the black ball exchange?

Hey Mr. Robert Pallet , same goes for me. I was 24 years old and watching it with my late mum got rest her soul. She was a big fan of Dennis Taylor and I myself used to play snooker everyday those days at the Hammersmith Snooker Centre those days. It was an old abandoned building those days , long gone. I love watching these old finals, for me 80s was a magical time. Wish I had a time machine and go back !!!

My dad said he watched this. He was 15 at the time, and his older brothers went out partying when Dennis won the final in the early hours of the morning, and he had to go to bed as he had school 😂😂

I'm German, and did not have the chance to see it live as a kid and had no idea there was other billard games than pool or carambole. When I first came to England four years later I learned about the game of snooker as the family I was living in liked to watch snooker. It was Dennis Taylor who played in a match when the local experts told me about the rules - and about the thing that Dennis Taylor won the most exciting match ever. I just registered but really got to know about it many years later when I first saw the final minutes of this final frame. The tension is unbearable even if you know the outcome. The last minutes are of such poor level but from that you learn perfectly about the pressure which is on top players as well (and no matter what sport). A legendary piece of sports history.

Remember as a 12yr old kid watching it live with my old lady,my mam was knitting and she hated snooker but was absolutely glued to the 📺 set,it was just sporting theatre with the highest level of drama,I'll never forget it for as long as I live.

Anyone notice the cushions/ edges are not as rubbery as of the snooker tables of today. The ball slows down as soon as it hits the corners

Dennis Taylor still looks the same. When I was watching this as a child (on re-runs) I thought he probably looked the age he was when he won it (36) but now being extremely close to that age myself I see he did look older than he was although now he looks his age.

Bloody hell! I need a whisky and shower! Steve Davis is my all-time favourite snooker player but let's face it, Taylor deserved this one!

Wednesday 15th September 2022. My eldest son Julian and myself, went to the ARENA THEATRE ST ALBANS, to watch a hilarious evening of snooker. John Virgo funny as always, Steve Davis, Dennis Taylor, reinacting their infamous 1985 final frame of snooker. Getting people up on stage doing trick shots, then Steve and Dennis having a couple of frames of snooker, jokes all round. Finished up with question time, talking about my hero's, Higgins, White, O'Sullivan, Trump. Great entertainment, everyone agreeing that RONNY O'Sullivan is the greatest of all time.

Tavy@ i still remember watching this live in 1985 and i must admmit its the most excitiing sporting moment i have ever seen. I was age 12 when i was lucky enough to have seen this live and at 12.3am or some late time it was still going on but how could my great mum and dad send me to bed when this was on as i had school the next day. But i had never seen or heard steve davis sound so gutted like that before, he seemend to be in a rage i thought and was trying hard to control it. Strait away i thought he didnt even want to talk to david vine. And he never spoke about the match or even the frame and black ball finish. Wich wasnt like steve at all. He just seemend to want to say 'i have nothing to say i am gutted and just dont talk to me. And once i get paid i am out of here. I thinck i heard or read some where it took steve a long time to get over that defeat. But well done dennis you were great. And what a come back. But if there was a 100 greatest sporting moments this has to be number one, easy.

What a great era for snooker

Yes watched this with my brother, we were both teenagers then punching the air and running around the living room at nearly 1 o'clock in the morning, mum came down in her dressing gown to tellus to bloody well shut up, great times !

A glorious moment of sport. What gets me is the reaction of the crowd at the end. You can hear people literally in hysterics - and not the laughing kind. In terms of tension and excitement I doubt this will ever be bettered.

Re Davis' last shot: in retrospect you can clearly see that he over-cut it. I remember that night so well. A Sunday night turned into the earliest hour of Monday morning and I was sooo pumped with adrenaline that although I started work early there was NO WAY I was going to sleep prior to about two hours before getting up.

I wanted to tell you guys a funny story, and it's all true. I was eight at the time of the momentous match, and my lovely Mum let me stay up to watch the final, and did we enjoy it? Yes. I was also a quite bright pupil at school, and learned to read at a ridiculously early age (my Mum said 1, but I'm sure she was exaggerating. It was 2, I think. Anyway they didn't really know what to do with me at school so, I'm not joking, they used to get me to mark the other children's English work. I like to think I was quite good at it, too (at least I could spell). Anyway, the day after the match, we all went into school and as usual, had to write in our News books. Half the page was blank for a picture and the other half was lined for writing. Mrs Evans (who never liked me) gave me a pile of books to mark, and the first one was from Wai who's dad owned the chip shop. There was a rather badly drawn table, some dots which I presumed were balls, a rather rangy looking Steve Davis and a bloke with very big glasses. Underneath Wai had written "last night we watched the snooker final." Cool, I thought. And then I opened the next book. "Last night we watched Steve Davis and Dennis Taylor. I wish Steve had won". And again, and again. I'll never forget it. We all watched the snooker final!

Steve Davis still owes me £5 for this result. And it kept us up till 2am with lectures the next morning

I was living in London at this time and remember staying up past midnight on a Sunday and into Monday morning to watch the end of this match ... I think most of Great Britain did. If I remember correctly Dennis Taylor won a lot of frames late to tie it at 17-17 and force the FINAL frame.

Considering he was at the absolute peak of his phenomenal powers at this time, already a triple World Champion and going for a 3rd in a row with nobody near his level of consistency, the mistakes Steve made in this frame were quite extraordinary

Davis's last safety on the black was superb! His position from that last red cost him the pink and maybe more.

They are so slow that I quit watching the match back in 1985 and just now tuned in to check if they had finished.

I remember watching an interview of Paul Newman, who was in UK to promote his film The Colour of Money (coincidentally a film about pool players), saying he stayed up very late to see the match to the finish even though he had a lot of engagements the next morning. Well, you me and half the country was awake for this great match! Unforgettable!

This match is the best world snooker final ever. The nugget built up an 8 frame lead but then in frame 9 the whole match changed the underdog came back to win an epic match 18 frames to seventeen. I was delighted for denis taylor he got revenge on davis for his defeat a year earlier in the semi final. Proves once again nice guys can win tournaments if they stick at it.

Love the fact how he tried to pot the black at the end with the cushion risking it all!!! Not many players would do that nowdays lets face that.

I watched this back in 1985, and 35 years later, I still think it's the best frame of snooker ever played.

It's good that Dennis had the glasses made with clear frames. Otherwise they might look a touch conspicuous and silly.

21:13 this one of the reasons why the miss rule was introduced but it would have wrecked this atmosphere and tension of this final. Was 15 when this happened and remembered watching it with my dad - classic match by 2 classics of the game

I remember watching this live, first time I ever stayed up late at the age of 10 and watched history..... Brilliant....

Taylor's brown blue and pink were all staggeringly brilliant and his double on the black was so so unlucky. Having said that, this film reminds me of an amazingly bad positional shot off a blur that Davis played, at about 1.05. He wouldn't have done that in another 100 attempts, and that one shot may well have cost him the championship.

£35k for second place in 1985 was not to be sniffed at.

I was 8 but I remember this as clear as day! I remember the late Alex Higgins win in '82 as well but that's because my mom loved Alex. Largely because he was Irish like my mom. Lol.

And what a commentator... Ted Lowe. Just the right voice for a match like this. I wonder if we'll ever see a final like this again. Final frame, final black? It might be a very long time yet.
