In part 4 of this video series on the 1986 VF1000R we remove the front forks and rear shock, strip them down to their individual components where possible, replace all the seals and then refit them to the bike, before filling with fresh ATF.

I feel your logic of ensuring you capture the rear shock oil, so you know how much to put back in is a little flawed. As it assumes there's been no leakage, which in my experience is rarely the case, even with good seals but especially 35 yr old plus shocks. Most mono shocks (I've worked on) have separate oil and gas using a bladder or piston (piggy back or separate chamber) the oil side is full and requires careful bleeding and regasing to somewhere 120- 160psi depending on spec. Others like this I assume? Gas/oil share the same chamber inside the shock body and don't require bleeding, but must have an exact amount of oil put in them and gassed to 120- 160psi depending on spec. My point being you've got to know the exact amount, not rely on what you can get out of the shock. All that said I do enjoy your work, keep it up my friend.

That’s a great observation and your absolutely right, luckily the workshop manual does specify 9.0 US oz of ATF for the rear shock if you blow it apart, which is close to what I was able to evacuate out of it. I just never blow them apart because you can’t find replacement seals. This is mixed air/oil shared, no bladder like the modern shocks. Generally I recommend customers to junk the original shock and get a modern replacement, as even after this procedure the shock is mediocre at best. But if the bike is extremely original I understand why they want to keep them. Thanks for watching the channel!
