ファンタジーの世界を背景とした、アクションゲーム。8方向レバーで移動、剣とジャンプにボタンを使用する。敵と戦いながら森を抜け、城を目指し進む。城内に入ると、今度はいくつものトラップが待ち受けている。全6ステージ。内容にマッチしたBGMが、このゲームを盛り上げている。また、体力回復アイテムの青い薬が登場するが、ほんの少ししか回復しない。
ストーリー:
主人公の盗賊ラスタンが、セーム国で暴れまわる怪獣ドラゴンの退治を、セーム国の姫からたのまれ「ドラゴンの首と国中の財宝の交換」を約束し、ドラゴン退治に旅立つ。

A platform hack 'n' slash game from Taito in which a single player guides a barbarian hero through a number of fantasy-themed levels, fighting through swathes of mythological fantasy creatures, including orcs, skeletal warriors and multi-headed hydra.
More powerful weapons can be picked up, as well as bonus items that can increase the barbarian hero's health and give increased protection against enemy attack. Players should be wary that some collectable items are cursed and will have a detrimental effect on the hero's health and performance. Unlimited continues are available throughout the game.

- TRIVIA -
Rastan Saga was released in March 1987 in Japan. It was known outside Japan as "Rastan".
Rastan was inspired by the 'Conan the barbarian' saga novels, by Robert E Howard. In the background of the first stage, giant stone statues can be seen that bear more than a passing resemblance to the statues that featured in 'The Lord of The Rings - Fellowship of the Ring'. While the film appeared several years AFTER Rastan, the famous LotR concept artwork that featured in the deluxe addition of the book had been available for some time.
The main character, Rastan, appears as a selectable character, ''Miracle Rastan'', in "Champion Wrestler".
The game contains several bonus items that are not normally dropped by enemies: A golden armature, a brown scroll and a yellow scroll. Graphics for these can be seen in the tile-sets and modifications to game's data tables can cause them to be dropped. The golden armature acts like the existing armature, the scrolls do nothing.
The game contains a built in test mode, activated by the value of two bytes towards the end of the code roms. Invincibility can be selected, causing 'NO-HIT' to be displayed at the bottom of the title screen. The starting level can also be modified.
The game forbids the initials 'SEX' on the high-score table. If you try, they get changed to 'AHA'.
Pony Canyon / Scitron released a limited-edition soundtrack album for this game (Kyukyoku Tiger : G.S.M. Taito 2 - D28B0008) on November 21, 1988.
Zuntata Records released a limited-edition soundtrack album for this game (Zuntata History L'ab-normal 1st - ZTTL-0038) on April 1, 1999.

このゲームは出たときは1面で死にまくりで全然進めませんでしたが、後にやりこむと1コインクリアできるまでハマりました。爽快感溢れるいいゲームですよ。1面ノーミスでクリアできるようになれば4面のボスで死なない限りハマりはありません。1面回復アイテムがあんまり出ないのでハマるときはハマります。２は全く別物のクソゲーですので触らぬが吉です。

I love this version, you get more depth of story with Rastan Saga (Japanese game) than with the non-Japanese. You hear Rastan's voice, you get more into the story, you care more.

Taito made up for it with Rastan Saga 3, an epic ending to the trilogy. Called Warrior Blade in MAME.

Wow, your play looks true Rastan. They say it Conan as the game is based on the movie Conan, the barbarian. It's really hard game and I could not even see the first boss waiting after fire traps. I love the background music (BGM) and the BGM was top class. Particularly it is wonderful when it combined with the effects of thunders and lightenings called by the fierily angry dragon who lost all the followers. Rastan move forward without fears and it is his courages and powers that makes me feel hero. This is macho game all masculinity is to always dream for higher vision and stronger arms. Thank you for perfect play!!~

He actually is based on the the original book Conan. That's why the intro was removed from the western version Taito was afraid the Robert. E. Howard estate would sue them.

This is the first MAME ROM run I've seen that actually performs as the arcade. I've seen a bunch of runs were they say it's on Norma difficulty, but they take reduced damage or bats aren't present in some sections, or buff drops happen in levels they shouldn't.

ラスタンサーガは一見するとえげつない高難易度に思われますが、一つ一つを丁寧に進めていくと難易度は高くありません（４面のボスで射程の長い武器を取れないとハマリますが、それ以外はハマリはありません。）。あと、オレンジ色の薬は体力が少し減ってしまいますが、10,000点もあるので体力に余裕のあるときは積極的に取るのが、当時のハイスコアラーのセオリーでした（時間さえ掛ければ意味なく稼げてしまうので、ハイスコアー集計で私の1,000,000点オーバーは認められることなく、直ぐに終わってしまいました。）。幻想的なグラフィック、OGR氏による壮大なBGM、やりこめば必ず上手くなれるゲームバランスと紛れもない名作でした。キャラクタが大きくなってのは良いですが、グラフィックの描き込みと動きが荒く、操作性の低下と戦略性もない「Ⅱは生まれてはいけない子」だったのに、当時悲しくなりました。

I believe my 7-Eleven had a test version of this game. The soldier enemies that are green were black on the one I played. All the other characters were colored normal. Also it looks like you were playing this on an easier setting? I didn’t see any flock of bats attacking you in any of the castles. Non the less great job!

At 2:55, if you stop and walk back left, to scroll that rope you just climbed back on to the screen, you will get a guy who, when killed will ALWAYS drop the ring! You can just see him appear and disappear in your video. (That's a mega-tip from me... the king of rastan!)

the cloak reduces damage by halve, the shield reduces dmg of proyectiles or fireballs, the ring makes your attack faster and also increases the duration of special weapons like the flaming sword or axe , the necklace doubles your points with each kill or gems collected and the staff or scepter makes more gems to appear
