I was a teenager in 1987 and I remember me thinking "This Lipton is the beginning of a new era in women tennis" Graf beating Martina 63 62 in SF and Evert 62 61 in F. That was amazing!

What came after the toenail clipper cut was her fault. She had two choices: to ignore the paper cut and keep playing, or allow herself to expect pity from tennis fans in taking some time off. She chose the latter for her own reasons. Steffi is THE GOAT, no howling, screaming nor steroids necessary.

@@MrBjorn6 Dunces can't put very basic pieces together. If Steffi were a teenager in the late 1990s, her coaching and training would have been according to the times: more power and variation. With what she would have had naturally (what had her win 22 GS's) Steffi would have probably won 80% of their meetings. Nothing and no one will ever match the excitement of Steffi's Golden Slam Year.

Look at Martina blowing on her racquet at the beginning of the match thinking “I’m on fire, my racquet is hot” 🙄. I do acknowledge that every elite tennis player, to show their dominance, must have a level of arrogance. Martina and Serena are more vocal and expressive while Steffi and Chris are more cool and reserved yet equally intense champions. It’s so interesting to watch. Martina showed us how confident she felt from the start and wasn’t complaining about the wind but as soon as Steffi started hitting forehand winners especially at 24:06 and 39:32, the gusty conditions was an issue for Martina. Steffi could not care less how the wind affected the tennis ball. She adjusted and compensated like a seasoned veteran at such a young age (I think she was 17 at this time). Steffi handled the tough conditions so well yet Martina, with all of her experience, could not cope with it. Ultimately, it came down to Steffi able to hit through the wind with her forehand. Martina, who was #1 at the time, literally and figuratively got blown 🌬 💨 away in the semis. Definitely intimidating!!!

Martina was incredibly theatrical at times, especially in the 80s. One of the problems with it though is that she was often incredibly easily distracted and her mind would wander. I think in that incident you mention, it seems like her mind isn't really there. She's sort of joking with her entourage, and she looks over to them as she does it. As this match progresses, you can tell that she's not really mentally in the match - her mind is allover the place. You can see that kind of thing in quite a few of her matches during her 80s dominant patch.

Very focused match by Steffi here against probably her toughest opponent. By contrast, Martina's concentration and focus was very up and down. She said years later that she'd been burnt out since the end of 1986 but didn't realise it until years later. Perhaps some signs of it here - she went through the first half of 87 without winning a single tournament.

I think 87 was a better year for MN compared to 88. I agree that she is quite ‘fragile’ mentally. Even going to the extent of using the 200G in an effort to follow Steffi. MN wasn’t very nice to Steffi when she they were on the tour but MN was always complementing Steffi’s athletic abilities and tennis skill after she left the sport.

@@markdecena4559 definitely a very odd period in MN's career, psychologically. She said something interesting recently - that during that period in the late 80s she found that she couldn't play her best tennis against Graf and to a lesser extent Sabatini. She said that the thought of playing her best and then still losing to either of them was too much for her to handle, so she'd seize up mentally at various stages in their matches.

There was a point where Martina had a match point or one point away from match point (can't remember which) but Graf hit a net cord I believe and the ball bounced over Martina causing her to lose that point. Martina was in a position to hit a winning volley because Graf hit the ball right to Martina and Martina didn't have to move or lunge to get to it. If it wasn't a net cord it might have been some dust that flew in Martina's eyes at the There was also a point where Martina was at the net and this was late in the match with Martina trying to close the match and some dust flew in her eye right at the moment she was trying to make a volley. I remember her taking off her glasses to wipe her eyes after that point. I don't know if Im confusing this with the net cord point or both happened. Sorry my memory is not perfect on this one.

I think sometimes it's easier to return a hard hit shot. If you're in position, you can rebound your opponent's pace back at them. If the ball is coming at you slower with spin, you have to generate all the power yourself and also try and judge how the spin is going to affect the flight of the ball.

Tougher to go down the line or inside out with her grip which was closer to a continental. One of the first things my coach taught years ago, put lots of top to players with continental, but regardless of whatever spin you give them, they will usually go crosscourt when rallying or passing.
@th8257
@th8257 3 жыл бұрын
Her forehand was notoriously fragile. When she wasn't on form, or if she was under pressure the. It could break down quite badly. Going cross court is the percentage shot - it goes over the lower part of the bet and gives you more space to hit into. Also has to be remembered that Martina was trying to hit to steffi's backhand because it was her weaker side.
@guyinsf
@guyinsf 2 жыл бұрын
@@th8257 True about her forehand being off off at times but during her era before Graf the majority of female players didn't have a forehand as a weapon so for someone who was fragile "at times" with her forehand Martina was also one of the few whose forehand was actually a weapon when it was on, more so any anyone else.

Graf is not the GOAT. In fact, it’s shocking how few records in the WTA world record book that she actually holds. Graf has the golden grand slam and most weeks at number one, but that’s about it. She has a shocking amount of losing head-to-head records at 9. She has a winning record against 3 of the all-time top 10 players. Evert holds the record with winning H2Hs against 4 of the all-time top ten. Graf does not have the most titles at the Austrian, French, Wimbledon, or the US Open. Those records belong to Williams, Evert, and Navratilova. She does not have the most GS titles on the various surfaces.. hardcourts, clay, or grass. Those records again belong to Williams, Evert, and Navratilova. She’s not the best at any grand slam or on any surface. She doesn’t have the highest winning percentage all time or at the grand slams. Those records belong to Court. So how again is she the GOAT? She isn’t. Here are some of the major Open Era (not amateur) records in women's tennis and the person who holds the record: Most grand slam titles= Williams Most tournament titles= Navratilova Most titles in a single season= Court Most consecutive singles titles= Navratilova Most titles on hard: Williams Most titles on clay: Evert Most titles on grass: Court Most titles on carpet: Navratilova Highest winning percentage on hard courts= Evert Highest winning percentage on clay= Evert Highest winning percentage on grass= Navratilova Highest winning percentage on carpet= Navratilova Most AO titles= Williams Most FO titles= Evert Most Wimbledon titles= Navratilova Most USO titles= tie Evert & Williams Most consecutive GS titles= Navratilova & Court Most Olympic Gold Singles= (No repeat winners) Graf, Capriati, Davenport, V. @Max E In order to be even considered the GOAT in tennis a person should hold several of the following records… most GS titles, most tournament titles, most titles at each of the grand slams, most titles on each of the surfaces. No one in their right mind would suggest that a player gets to be considered the GOAT without having at least a few of those records. Here is Graf’s standing on each of those records…. Most overall GS titles= no (Williams holds the record. Graf is second) Most overall tournament titles= no (Navratilova holds the record. Graf is third behind Chris and Martina. Navratilova has 60 more titles than Graf. Chris has 50 more than Graf) Most AO titles= no (Williams holds the record. Graf is tied for second with Court, Goolagong, and Seles) Most FO titles= no (Evert holds the record. Graf is second.) Most WO titles= no (Navratilova holds the record. Graf is tied with Williams for second) Most USO titles= no (Tie Evert & Williams hold the record. Graf is third) Most titles on hard= no (Williams holds the record. Graf is second) Most titles on grass= no (Navratilova holds the record. Graf isn’t even in the top 10 here. She never won a single grass court title except for Wimbledon) Most titles on clay= no (Evert holds the record. Graf is distant second. Chris has 70. Graf has 32). Most titles on carpet= no (Navratilova holds the record. Graf is third behind Chris and Martina…and the distance is wide. Martina has 88. Graf has 31). How can someone not be the best at grand slams, the best at tournaments overall, the best at any of the four grand slams, or the best on any surface and be considered the GOAT? It takes a bunch of double taking, lies, and a series of ordinal rankings to somehow catapult Graf from a bunch of 2nd-5th place (or worse) records to number 1.
