One of my first ever Gib's Bike Shop custies is moving out of town and dropped off an abandoned vintage mountain bike project! This is a very cool, very original Mongoose ATB from back when ATBs were actually ATBs! No conversion necessary. This one is already what you want! Old school mountain bike tech at it's finest. A very fun project from a box of parts to a really funky all-rounder, practical bike. This is part 2 of 3. Enjoy the ride!

Just discovered your channel. I enjoy tinkering on bikes. Like you I adhere to “practical bikes for practical people “. I have donated a few bikes sharing with friends and acquaintances. Presently have 25 older bikes in my stable. So… my feedback is that your channel is spot on for me. Actually surprised to see how many folks are in agreement. I see so many folks on new go-fast bikes on the Greenway. Began to think I was the only fellow enamored with the older classics. Please continue and stay the course!

I absolutely loved seeing this old Mongoose restored. As a kid, that's one of the many bikes I coveted. There is nothing like an all chrome frame 80s bike.

I really like your videos. I can learn a lot from you and take better care of my bikes... I think that your bike restorations are very cool and it is nice that you give new life to great bikes. Right now I'm working on my Giant Toughtroad bike, it is not that old, 2016, I've taken it apart, clean everything, changed the BB and setting it up as a "gravel" bike... converting from flat bar to drop bars...

The "Ope" thing must indeed be Scandinavian. I grew up in a small Finn and Swede village out here in Mass. Everybody said Ope years ago and us now oldtimers still do. Thanks for sharing your bike knowledge with is.

Loved the detail in the 3 parts👍. My only concern is that all I hear when you are cleaning with the rag is the grit trapped in the rag rubbing on everything. I think you should invest in an ultrasonic cleaner. I got one and have never looked back. I use the formula 88 from home depot. My cleaner is 1o litres so I need 2 x5litre jugs. I use it neat not diluted 1:5. Everything comes up immaculate - usually let it run for 20 minutes. Even grubby chains come up roses! Just a suggestion. 😊

OK this is coming from an old timer the bearings in your bottom bracket you need to not just wipe them off, but put them in a small metal can with some lacquer thinner or some other hot degreaser and shake them around and let them soak for a while and get all the grease out of those bearing races/cups wiping them down with a rag doesn’t cut it. There are very small little pieces of metal that are worn and trapped in the grease so it’s imperative that you get rid of the old grease be sure and blow them out with some compressed air when you remove them from the Degreaser then put a glob of grease in the palm of your hand hold the bearing on edge like a coin and drag it across your palm and scrape it so that you pack the grease into the bearing itself and all through the cup then turn it 180° and repeat not just scoop it on around it please. This was taught to me by an old timer when I was about 10 years old I am sure that it would’ve made that bearing right as smooth as glass when you were turning it by hand, I must say though I have learned a lot from watching you. I appreciate your time and talents. Good luck with your channel.

Nice work, @bkefrmr! It seems like bike manufacturers used the U-brake on mountain bikes for a very few years and then gave them up as a bad habit. I had a 1986 Specialized Stumpjumper Comp with a U-brake.

Really enjoyed bringing the Mongoose back to life. My only suggestion is to please start wearing nitrile gloves. The petroleum chemicals you are working with are nasty and the more your hands are unprotected the more you are exposed. It takes time but after a couple of decades you can’t undo what’s been done. Having worked for a longtime around chemicals, I always tell the upcoming generation to protect themselves because not too many years ago there wasn’t a thing called an old chemist!

I've recently got myself back into riding & tinkering.... Obtained most of my repair practice on BMX rides as a kid. I found a reasonable used Mongoose MTB frame to wrench on; converted the 21-speed to a 3-speed cruiser, upgraded the saddle & cockpit. Next will be the forks & headset, then a few accessories before new rubber. Has been fun. Thanx for all the great videos, have made things so much easier to learn the more complex set-ups than what I started on.

Love this just watched all 3 parts of you restoration video! I have the same bike but in a teal green color almost like the Bianchi Green. This was the bike I stared my cycling journey with and rode my first Metric Century ride on it. I now own three steel bikes, the Mongoose ATB, Bianchi Alfana (down tube shifters❤), and a Surly Cross Check. This hyped me up to start the rebuild on my ATB as it has a busted bottom bracket it has been through two moves with me including from Hawaii back to Texas and I just refuse to get rid of it as it is just way too different and special. Thanks!

The old bike owner of the shop I worked in, prior to 1990, he trialed and sampled everything in bike lube available at the time, and TriFlow was not only the best he found , but also cost effective at that time. There are some newer lubes that are great these days, but TriFlow is my goto even today.. Probably because I'm used to working with it..

Bottom bracket shot was a pretty interesting angle in this video. I got to use your cable stretching advice. A local bike shop helped me to figure out how to re tighten a stem shifter (Shimano 7 Speed SIS S452) that decided to come loose on a ride. They installed a new cable since they worked on the shifter, but I noticed some skipping shifts the next day. Stretched the cable and dialed it back in for smooth sailing again.

You would have thought that the shop that installed the cable would have stretched it out and adjusted it so you wouldn't have to deal with that yourself.

About feedback: you should explain what lubricants you use for what parts and use cases. I mean, there's special purpose grease and oil for basically any bike part, but you seem to get everything done with just a few general purpose types of greases/degreasers and oils. I suspect that most of those application specific greases are more of a marketing thing or highend probike thing and don't make a real difference to daily drivers.
@HunterAtheist
@HunterAtheist 27 күн бұрын
It's mostly newer bikes that use brake fluid for hydraulic brakes, friction pastes for carbon parts, oil for suspension forks, etc. Older bikes tend to just use common lubricants and grease. They weren't any different from any other machine of the time. Modern bikes are so specialized for good or bad. Personally I prefer the simplicity of older stuff. It was made to last, and I don't need tons of specialty tools either.

About your front brakes. The non drive side, that's the side sitting on the seat looking down at the brakes that's on the left, is shaped different that the drive side. The side that's on the right sitting on the bike seat looking down is different.

Enjoy your videos. On the more intricate "repairs" such as the bottom bracket, it would be helpful if you'd go into a bit more detail regarding the tools being used, things to look for, ie: how to tell if bearings need to be replaced, etc. Thing you take for granted or do "automatically" are easily overlooked by those of us with less experience/expertise than you.

Little tip, I really want to see the bikes test ridden in the end, maybe even sold but I dunno how that's possible. The vids are also a bit long to sit through on a continuous basis, I love them, but eventually I won't be able to keep it up. However also maybe it's why I like them. Shorter tip videos might be good also, focused on single tasks.

I usually squirt some tri flow, or some thicker wet chain lube into freewheels from the front and back while I have them off and give them a good spin while I tilt from side to side. If they are really crusty I put some degreaser in first, give a good spin and set it aside while I work on something else to let it drain out. Its not worth spending more than a few seconds fussing with freewheels because they are so cheap, but this usually gets them sounding, and working nice again.

The why not to grease threads is it will throw off your torque settings and may back out easier so you need to tighten more. However some manufacturers will specify anti-cease or grease or something and factor this in to the torque settings. If you live is a dry hot climate, maybe skip the threas grease. However if you live somewhere prone to rust, definitely do it. I say why not though and just crank it down hard and keep and eye on it and she'll be right.

Replace the nut type bottom bracket! At the very least replace the nut type bottom bracket spindle with a bolt type. Those nut type had a habit of coming loose and ruining cranks. You noticed that the non-drive side was loose coming off. I had a 1986 Mongoose ATB and the non-drive side crank came loose and got ruined. Had to get a replacement. I have seen others with bolt type with replacement non-drive side crank arms. I tried reusing a bolt type on 1991 Nishiki mountain bike I restored for my brother and his non-drive side crank arm came loose and got ruined. I have replaced every nut type bottom bracket with a bolt type whenever I have done a repair or restoration to be safe. There is a reason that the nut type went away. They tend not to hold and the cranks wallow loose and get ruined. Thanks
