In this video I give a full in depth tour of a 1987 Toyota Pickup. I take viewers on a close look through the interior and exterior of this car while showing details, over viewing of features, and noting unique styling cues to the vehicle itself. I also show the engine and the details of it, start it up and see how it sounds under acceleration. A thorough tour/review of this car designed to give others a greater overall appreciation of the vehicle.

One of Toyota's best. I used to own a red '87, bought it bone stock base model. Heck it only had one side mirror! Carbed 22R. Served quite a few moves and hauling stuff. Lowered it, wheels ,and all, during the mini-trucking era in the mid-late 80's. lol Around '93, I lost it in a sweeper. Totalled. RIP but sure loved it!

01FozzyS love my 87 carb yota mines only got 196k miles has on rebuild on the motor gonna rebuild when she hits 210k mines the base but mine came with 2 side mirrors it's a 5 speed 2wd when I rebuild the motor imma out a front solid axle on and make it an awd along with a 4" lift I may only get 10 mpg but I sure do enjoy the little thing and being able to throw it sideways and it not damage it unlike these full sized pickups is awesome lol

My dad had a red '85 that he bought new in 1985 as one of his fleet trucks for his landscaping business. He sold it to one of his employees over a decade ago which it had well over 200k miles at the time. Not sure if it's still running today or not, but wouldn't be surprised if it still is. It was a great very reliable little truck.

I miss my 87, it was a 4 speed, no A.C., no power brakes, no power steering, no radio. Drove it for 400k 💛💛💛, and gave it to my sister who sold it 16 years ago. I ran into it recently, still running. I replaced 1 oil pan gasket, two clutches, and a master cylinder. I miss my baby 😔😔😔.

This video also brings back a lot of memories for me! When I was around 5 my dad used to drive this company truck all the time which was a 1992 Toyota '1-ton' pickup 2WD. He always had this truck and it was as if it was our own vehicle! I hated having to sit in the middle because the gearshift was right between my legs! :P It's too bad trucks like this are dying, the only thing you can get now like this but brand new is the Ford Ranger, which is being discontinued later this year... :(

Kyle, what you saw was the classic 22R 4-cylinder by Toyota. My dad had one in his old Celica, and I had one in my old '86 4x4 pickup. As someone posted earlier, these engines were carbureted - and they remained carbureted until 1990, but only in 2WD form. The carburetors are made by Aisin and are 2-barrel. They can get finicky over time and need some adjusting. Also, 2WD pickups like the one in this video came only with a 4-speed manual. They are some of the most reliable vehicles on Earth.

Bought my 86 for $2300 with 146,000 miles on it. The odometer stopped at 199,999 and it’s probably at 300,000 now. Most of the work I could do myself. It’s been almost 10 years, best 2300 I ever spent

Have you tried fixing the odometer? On mine it stopped right before turning 150,000. I pull the gauge cluster out and found the numbers that rotate, a piece has broken off. I found the piece and super glued it back on. And it has fixed this issue.

If I recall correctly, turbos only went onto the SR5 models. Horsepower jumped - if I can use "jump" in this context - to 135. Considering stock power was only 105, that's actually pretty good. The 22R-TE mostly benefited from a big jump in torque in the lower end of the rev band, over 170ft-lb which was VERY good, especially for a truck. I think they never offered the turbo on a carbureted engine, but for that I'd have to go check my books. I'm not sure.

@adambot3000 I already miss my 88 Toyota Pickup 2wd. R.I.P. The truck just got totaled in an accident , and only had 130,000 miles. It still runs like new, even though the cab is all smashed up. I used it like a 1 ton, with a flatbed and wooden stake sides, and it never let me down. It had a 22re and 3 speed auto, which is a somewhat rare combination. The old Toyota trucks were really built to last, and can do a lot more than most people think, even with 112 hp :)

Nope, pulled that stuff out of my head. And I'm not sure about the SR5 part. That started as a specification - "Sport, R-something, 5-speed," but it morphed into what was mostly a style package. I do remember you couldn't have the turbo on the carbureted models, just fuel injected engines only. I bought the last carbie unit from our local dealer, still runs like a charm. An old, slow, rusty charm.

@falcolombardi217
@falcolombardi217 9 жыл бұрын
Yeah, this one's carbureted, plus with a bed full of snow it's safe to assume it's pretty cold. I doubt he stepped on the gas pedal to prime it, so stack it all together and there's your hard start. My '85 is injected, so I'm pretty sure it was just an optional upgrade when it was built. That'll fire right up when you tell it to. Great little trucks, and when you get a hold of one with injection and all of the optionals like Extended cab, tachometer, A/C and such, they can get pretty cozy -- especially if you slap on a set of new shock absorbers. I stand behind these trucks wholeheartedly, they're like Kalashnikov rifles: cheap, simple, and unstoppably reliable - plus, with a little work they'll be pretty smooth and reasonably modern.
@elevatorman427
@elevatorman427 9 жыл бұрын
I like these older trucks too. If he would hit the gas pedal a couple times it would of probably helped it start easier. When I think about it being cold and probably sitting that wasn't a terrible startup for not pumping a carbed engine.
