Unlike many racers today, good riders of that era had to be very smart and know how to read a race as it happened. They had to (no radios). Roche was riding perfectly for Kelly, but when Kelly didn't make the last separation caused by Sorensen, Roche knew what he had to do. at 5:59, you can see him reaching down to shift up a gear or two before making his move. Excellent move, plus the hesitation by the others = victory.

In Roche's book he said he felt terrible in the lead up to the Worlds, then come race day he felt he could do a good ride for Kelly, when the break happened Kelly missed the boat, Roche kept looking back waiting for Kelly to get back on, when it became clear he wasn't going too Roche took the bull by the horns, went for the small gap and the rest is history.!!
