It was miracle that Montana was able to pull himself together that season with the various injuries he had. Steve Young even though he was a good back up, was not starter material. He didn't come into his own until 1992 where after Montana was hurt, Young took over for good.

Young's 1st year he went 5-5 (before he got injured taking on a falcons lb) with a team that almost tree-peated. Steve Bono came in and went 5-1, and led the 49ers to the playoffs. lol.

Great game. If I remember correctly, both Ronnie Lott and Lawrence Taylor didn't play here. Lott was hurt, and I think Taylor was suspended for drug use.

This was not the only heartbreaking loss the Giants suffered in 1988

This is a classic Walsh-vs-Belichick matchup. It seems like BB would blitz a lot more often back then. Today, with so many advancements in the passing game and changing rules in favor of offense, he doesn’t blitz as much with the Patriots out of fear of getting burned down field.

Make no mistake, this was a Week 2 Playoff Game. The 49ers finished 10-6 and won their division and went on to win Super Bowl XXIII. The Giants finished 10-6 and missed the playoffs due to a tie-breaker with the Eagles. If the Giants win this, they're 11-5, win the Eastern division and likely make a Super Bowl run. Technically the 49ers knocked the Giants out of the playoffs in '81, '84 and '88. The Giants got the Niners in '85, '86 and '90. Brutal rivalry.

We was robbed in 1990 (and 1983 in DC). Bad calls, but, its not good for the league for one team to dominate. We understand, but Jeff Hostetler? lol!

@@kalidescopemind1Jeff played well enough that season plus they had a HOF defense and Otis Anderson running the ball so it didn’t matter who was QB to be honest

Man, 23:04-23:09 is one of the reasons why Jerry Rice is a God in San Francisco. That winning 78-yard TD catch seriously exorcised some demons that existed within the 49ers psyche. Remember the offensive (1985 and 1986) and defensive (1986) shit shows that the Niners had versus the Giants in the playoffs those two years? I bet Roger Craig (he wrote two paragraphs in his book Strictly Business about that 1986 playoff exit), Rice, and Bill Walsh remembered those games.

Got robbed in DC, should have won FIVE Super Bowls! (not counting Young in the 90s) The Raiders would have been a great test. 49ers got robbed on the three-peat too! Watch the phantom motion calls on big plays! Shouldn't have come down to Marshall. "Shit show"? You are a piece of work. lol. Psyche? Joe was in EVERYONE's head, and if you watched him play, you knew it too! Where were the Giaints in 1981, 84, 89, & 90? Hostetler? Don't make me barf big tuna!

Joe Montana is GOD in San Francisco. Why couldn't Simms throw a late TD to Emanuel? If you watch the game on THIS video, Jerry dropped a TD pass from Joe and gets ripped by Madden. "Jerry is paid too much money to drop passes like that!" Yeah we remember this game, and when we went into -20 windchill in Chicago and beat the 13-5 "Da Bears" in the 1988 NFC Championship game 28-3! Do the Montana Shuffle! lol!

So, not only was Steve Young starting, but Joe Montana was the holder for FGs. Strange times. Usually, the back-up QB, even if starting, does the holding.

C.K. 88!, Talk about payback. The Giants served the 49ers in the '85 and '86 playoffs, but in 1988 the 49ers were a different team and had a little payback on their minds. The Giants stood in the way of the 49ers getting to Super Bowl's XX and XXI, you think that didn't motivate the Niners in this game? Man oh man.

@@juliansmith4352 The NFL did the Giants dirty in '85 and '88. They went 10-6 and finished second in the NFC East both of those years and didn't make the playoffs. Then in 1990 with that expanded playoff you mentioned, they ran the table in the playoffs and got their second SB ring in five years.

How the tables were turned in 1988 when this game went down. The Giants eliminated the 49ers in back-to-back years in the playoffs (1985 and 1986, rather rudely I might add in 1986). But in 1988 the 49ers were a different team, super motivated, and pissed off because of the beatdown they got from the Vikings in the '87 playoffs.
