The Electric Music Machine follows the six resident composers of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop as they use a wide variety of sound sources - ranging from plastic-bags to the latest in computer-controlled music technology - to create music and effects for BBC programmes.
In this extract, Richard Attree develops music for the BBC schools radio series Popalong, using a state-of-the-art computer system, while Peter Howell puts the hum into hummingbirds for Wildlife On One: Birds of the Sun God.
Originally broadcast 29 March, 1988.

It’s funny to see the polarizing comments surrounding the slap bass sound. You can almost guess a person’s age based on whether they love that sound or hate it.

great video on how to produce vaporwave music. 1. get a Macintosh Plus running Digital Performer 1.0 2. add reverb to the bass line 3. play some 7th chords 4. profit

... yes, well, all true - except no 4. The RWW was eventually closed down because we couldn't make a profit 🤔

Reminds me of my old days with cuebase on my old Atari ST in the studio. Lots of Kenton midi for the analog stuff and digital offerings from Yamaha and Casio. Halycyon days. Love to know what happened to that Elka Synthex at 10:05

This is incredibly insightful, the process of developing a musical idea from scratch condensed into just 11 engaging minutes

Yes, that's still relevant (despite the embarrassingly dated sounds etc).

Sadly the Radiophonic Workshop lost something special when they went digital and started to sound like everyone else who could afford the same equipment.

Ah, the late 1980's - the shittiest time for music, when studios wanted to sound 'real' without the need for players.
