This was one of my favorite seasons in Nascar. 1988 was a great year for Winston Cup. Four first-time winners in one season (almost unheard of in those days). The first year for Earnhardt’s black paint scheme with the Goodwrench sponsorship. Bobby Allison’s and Neil Bonnett’s final wins in Winston Cup. Ken Schrader’s first win which returned the #25 Folger’s Chevy made famous by Tim Richmond to victory lane. Alan Kulwicki’s first win. Surprise wins by Lake Speed and Phil Parsons. This season had it all. It officially turned me into a Nascar fan. The kind of racing during these years is sorely missed today.

Absolutely. NASCAR came a looooong way from 5 cars that could afford rnough tires to race for a win. This midwesterner/ASA fan was THRILLED to see Kulwicki rise, Rusty establish, Martin getting closer. Sets up beautifully for next year

Between 1987-1999, there were a lot of instances where the 2nd place point man won the race but the champion ran just good enough to get the title to conclude the year. I don't mind those races.

Nascar should never changed the points .the playoffs are a dam joke. I thought it was ok when they first did it an only top 10 were eligible but now they put half the field an you jus got a bunch dam people who have no chance an are essentially jus in the dam way .they should go back to the way it was

Amen brother! Every other racing division in the world is decided off of who has the best finishes who has won the most races and who has accumulated the most points! Nascar on the other hand has turned it into some BS playoff crap!

Yep an they went an fucked bristol up when they dropped the banking from the steepest in the world down to 24 degrees. They don't no wen to leave something al9ne.only thing they should done to bristol was leave everything alone_¹except rip that dam concrete up an put it back to pavement an that's it an they shouldn't ever touched Atlanta..they should never used a resttrctor plate they should jus tore Daytona an talladega down after 87 an this was the perfect track in my opinion

Because it was. And Davey Allison was my 2nd favorite driver behind Awesome Bill, and just ahead of Alan Kulwicki.

Final race for Benny Parsons Final race for Cale Yarborough (who finished an impressive 10th) Last race for Kyle Petty in the #21 car Last race for Sterling Marlin in the #44 car (He stayed with the same team in 1989, but they changed numbers in the off-season) Last race for Neil Bonnett in the #75 car

This was also Hoss Ellington's (Jarrett's 1988 car owner for 10 superspeedway races along with Cale Yarborough for the rest) final official start. (He also DNQ'ed for the 1989 Daytona 500)

@@MatthewLewisAtlanta That Ellington team stables was in my hometown of Wilmington NC. That's almost unheard of these days not to be based in the Charlotte, Mooresville NC area.

Earnhardt fans I think hate Jeff Gordon for beating Earnhardt out for what would have been his 8th championship in 1995, but if Rusty Wallace had completed the choke job he so valiantly began at 1989 Phoenix it wouldn't have been an issue. They should be mad at Rusty, not Jeff. Rusty did finally do the choke thing in 1993 though, after taking lessons from Mark Martin in 1990 and Ricky Rudd in 1991.

Mike suffered a head injury in the Snowball Derby just a few weeks later before the 1989 season began. He was sti suffering from the effects of it when he stepped aside prior to the 2nd race of 1989. He tried a comeback in 1990 with Bobby Allison's new #12 team but was released early in the season and never returned to top tier racing.

Bill was not exactly known for his mic skills. He never really wanted the fame, but thats what happens to winners. Its still mind boggling, and hard to believe how the Melling team fell apart after the 88 championship. Just 4 years later, Bill shocked us all by bailing to the Jr Johnson team. After winning the cup, the Melling number 9 only had 5 more wins.

Dale intentionally stuck his driver side finder into Sterling's right rear tire hoping that he crashes with a tire that let's go as a result of Dale"s actions.

Wallace and his crew did everything he needed to (save somehow taking Elliot out of the race) in order to give himself the best possible chance that day and really you can't do much better than pole position, most laps led and the win. But it wasn't enough as Elliot only needed to finish 18th and he was easily inside that finishing 11th. 24 points was the difference at the end and I still think what mostly cost Rusty was that 2nd lap crash at Richmond that basically took him out of the race though no fault of his own. But that's racing, that crash at RR could easily have happened to Bill Elliot. Its just the way the cookie crumbled. Thanks for uploading this SMIFF TV.

Wallace won the last 4 races for crying out loud, 3 of them after being down 2 laps.

I was just looking at some old races and amazed at how many times he was lap(s) down and ended up winning, 89 bristol, 91 bristol, 92 richmond, 93 dover, and if the ones you just said count toward that total that's like 20% of his wins and I'm sure there are more I haven't seen or know about

THEBULL in retrospect both Wallace and Elliot certainly deserved a championship, Rustys came the next season. Now if we could only find more guys like these guys..

@@MrChristopherHaas Yeah I started watching NASCAR in 89 when I was 6 years old and watched every race from then until the middle of 2001 when I went through basic training, after my training I watched until around 2009/2010 or so, but then I just kinda lost interest after that period of time. I paid attention a little bit to Stewart winning the championship in 2011, I always kinda liked him as a driver

This is off the hook and ENTIRELY more exciting than the 'participation trophy', easy does it bullshit they parade as racing today. Did Earnhardt win a stage? Do they need overtime??? 😂😉 gtfo with that shit. Oh, and '88 was absolutely one if the most memorable seasons ever in nascar as is echoed in the comments. Sub plots abound!
