Out of all the great west Indies quicks at this time Marshall was the best of them all.

Greatest I've ever seen, followed by Garner, Ambrose and Holding. Marshall and Garner both had wicket taking averages in tests of just under 21, which is remarkable. Most of the great quicks were around the 25 - 28 mark.

Back in 1988 nobody thought that this would be the last time the West Indies would win a test series in England. They were such a powerful team in the 1980s. 08/01/2020 they are a very very weak team now.😢😢😢😢

i don't think we will ever see such talent as we have had in this decade and a half of domination

Great collection of uploads thank you for this. I remember how before this series there was optimism about England’s chances.

Difficult to see why. Our bowling attack was pretty insipid. Gower was out of form, Gatting couldn't help himself getting out padding-up to deliveries he needed to play and our tail was far too long. Emburey coming in at number 8 against this bowling attack was ridiculous. We were totally outclassed.

Great bowling no doubt, and that last morning was darker than most Summer evenings tbf.

I accept this was great bowling but my God England were utterly hapless at times. Proverbial pack of cards

windies took a dump on everyone in the 80's but england more than any other..two 5-0 series wins and this was 4-0..aus at least got 1 win in every series against them..england has decent players but seemed gower always struggled against the windies..was botham injured in this

Yes Ian Botham missed whole season with a back injury, and was never the same bowler again. Last hurrah for Botham was against Australia in the cricket world cup in 1992.

England was shit for 20 years. They did have Botham Gower and Gooch

Gower was overrated. Technically gifted but gifted his wicket far too cheaply. Contrast that with Border, S. Waugh or Miandad, even - nowhere near as good strokeplayers as Gower but far more successful at Test level. Batted for their lives.

Dreadful from England, but then again the Windies were very special then.

I loved those old school commentators Graveney and I'll Ingworth. They'd seen it and done it... and recognised then lauded the likes of Malcolm Marshall,'s abilities. Often though, contrary to many, I found Richie Benaud a bit miserly, almost begrudgingly praising while criticising English batsmen.

I noticed Capel at 6. Hmmmm....the English must have had their reasons. That attack of the West Indies though, was simply too classy in know how, consistency, ability, professionalism, hunger, drive and... Well, led by Viv Richards... NUFF SAID!!! :)
@Wally-H
@Wally-H 3 жыл бұрын
Your point is correct, although that's a little harsh on Capel as he did make centuries in county cricket and was picked as a genuine all-rounder, plus Downton actually didn't do badly with the bat in this series when compared to his peers in the England side. Emburey coming in at 8 did show a tail that was too long though, hence your point overall is correct. Against this attack you need better batsmen at eight and nine for sure.
