The 1988 race, under the first time sponsorship of
Tooheys Brewery, was won by Tony Longhurst and
Tomas Mezera driving a Ford Sierra RS500.
It was the first victory in the "Bathurst 1000" for
a turbocharged vehicle, and the first victory by a
four-cylinder car since Bob Holden and
Rauno Aaltonen won in a Morris Cooper S in 1966.
It was also the only time in the race's history that
there was a rolling start, as dictated by FISA regulations,
rather than the traditional standing start. - Wikipedia

What gets me is that they had Doug Mulray in to commentate under the belief that he's be more like his lewd radio personality. What they got was a person with a love of Motersport who acted in a professional manner!

Dick Johnson team had the err fast fuel all year but still ended up needing 3 cars cross entered to finish 2nd.

I was there that year, Phil Ward rolled right in front of me. He was sideways every lap and in the end off she went.

Not quite. Walkinshaw made the decision.to build his own car. Rest of the team including Perkins didnt know he was doing this.

The biggest mistake Ford made was to use the T4 Garrett turbo. Cosworth used Holset turbos in Indycart which used a twin scroll turbo that had very little lag and boost came on smoothly around 1500 rpm earlier than the Garrett . The twin scroll means it could run a low boost and still be 1.5 seconds per lap faster. Also tyre life would be greatly improved. Also the holset turbo could be run reliably with 3.1 bar boost.

I'm a Ford fan and of course love this race...of course. But, I really want to see Lowndes win one last Bathurst 1000. I love DJR Team Penske and Tickford but I love Lowndes as a legend of our sport.
