I owned a 89 GTU Coupe and a 91 Turbo II Coupe for years and daily drove both. Out of all the cars I ever owned they were my favorite. I wish Mazda would make a modern version but I know the Rotary will never come back sadly.

The Mazda rotaries were ruined not only by emissions laws (diminishing the thickness of apex seals), but, also the fact that people didn’t treat them they way they should be treated - like an exotic Italian two-stroke. You need to top of the oil regularly, if not also adding two stroke pre-mix into the gas tank. And they should be allowed to idle and warm up before being driven, especially with a turbo. And never short-shift them, once warmed up, let them get into the high rev-range.

I had an 87 Convertible in Black on Grey that I bought in the early 2000s.. By then very few people knew exactly what they were looking at! I had so many people coming up to me who thought it was a BMW or a Porche or Austin or anything other than what it truly was.. I kinda got a kick out of it. You could take this car anywhere riding in style, from Beverly Hills to Laguna Beach and I often did. The most fun was taking long drives on PCH right next to the ocean.. Loved my RX7 Convertible!

Such a good looking car with excellent lines, and has aged gracefully. The rotary will always be novel ICE engine and while they did have oil consumption issues, they weren't terrible to work on.

When I was craving a vert and didn't have a lot of money I test drove a Suzuki Samarai, yep it was incredibly slow and corned like a frisbee on its edge but what really killed the idea was the most incredibly complex and ill fitting softop I've ever come across. I still marvel at how close I came to buying one......

I bought a used 1990 rx7 convertible in 1997. I had it 14 years, when I moved overseas. I wish I had that car back. Mazda slogan at the time was "it just feels right," and those cars felt great. The 1990 and 1991 had some improvements over the 88/89. Better stick, better turn signal. No one used the roof as a targa, what is the point? Also in arizona that think roof was a big help in keeping the car cool. It was a great car. Mine was even almost trouble free. Also I loved that I would only see one or two others a month.

I would love to have a garage with all series of the RX7's, another with RX5/Cosmo's, another with RX4/Luce's, another with RX3/Savanna's, (never was a fan of the RX2's so let's skip that as this imaginary garage is costing me an arm and a leg) :)) Love rotaries, especially old style ported (lbridgeported) N/A rotaries, braaap braaap braaaaaap !!

Yes, I had an RX7 Convertible and it's too bad Mazda didn't develop it further into the 3rd Gen. The Miata was fun, but the RX Convertible was more like a Grand Touring Machine. It had much more Style and was a very sexy car. Guys were a little embarrassed to be seen driving Miatas compared to the more Macho RX7..

It seems Mazda was perfecting their take on the British roadster formula with this car. Mazda could save money by modifying an existing platform and then apply what they learned to the clean sheet Miata. It was a good plan.

Can't help but compare the 80's & 90's cars' performance to my last small car, a 2012 Ford Focus hatchback SE. Even with the non-turbo 160 hp 2.0L engine, that Focus would have blown the doors off many of those cars in a stoplight drag race with a 0-60 mph of 7.6 secs, not to mention out handle most of them in a slalom.

The British and Italians dominated the 2 seater convertible market from the 70s to the early 80s so it was still pretty fresh back then.. Mazda changed everything about that..

It's of the times, of course they are comparing this to the British. Back then the base FC RX-7 design was imitating a Porsche too. Mazda was trying to compete with the European market. So naturally, car reviews back then had to compare it to what Mazda was trying to copy.

Eh. Not a very good car. You don’t take coupes and cut off the top. Look at the back sagging with the top down. You must design a car to be a convertible from the ground up. Plus low torque rotary and 400+ pound weight increase is not a good combo.

I know what you're saying but this car actually wasn't just a coupe with the top cut off and scaffolding bars welded on. Mazda actually designed it separately to be a convertible. That's why it's still got 70% the body rigidity of the coupe which was very good in the 80s.
