1988 Silver Buick LeSabre Update and Outdoor Stuff

Some promising news for the 1988 Silver Buick, some tinkering with a few other cars and a little coverage of outdoor stuff.
I suppose the incredibly inconvenient location of the coolant temperature sensor was yet another hazard of cars designed by accountants. After all, it would have cost more to run a wiring harness to a more easily accessible location, and we can't possibly have that!

When the GM manual instructs you to "fashion a loop of wire", you know you're in trouble.

That garage door sounds like a whining dog. Instead of replacing the sensor, you could wire up a potentiometer on the dashboard and make your own manual adjustment of what temperature the ECU thinks the coolant is!

Glad to hear the Buick is doing better than before. The component that's below the throttle at 3:51 is, in fact, the Idle Air Control (IAC Valve), which, correct me if I'm wrong, regulates the air to gas ratio. If the gas is higher than the air in the ratio, it could produce the bad odor (gassy smell). I replaced the IAC valve on my car since it was on the fritz, but idles without issues (better safe than sorry), changed the air filter for the engine (found a leaf in the compartment), and my car did have an oil burning smell (ended up being the PCV Valve), and smells better than before. My car ended up needing new motor mounts (sounded like a rocket in drive), cam sensors (takes 2 of them; took forever to start), and the crank sensor (timing was off, and would stall) to get the car running again. Now to get the cruise control working again and fix the intermittent ABS/Trac off/SVS issue. My car has over 94,700 miles on it, still runs like new (quiet as well).

Bill, I just replaced one on my 88. Use a 3/4 deep well on a swivel. Go in from under the throttle plate. Use a light duty adhesive to keep the sensor in the socket. It wont be easy but Thats how I got mine. If you can keep it on a 3/8 socket cool but I did it with a 1/2.

Tilled up the garden ? That means planting is not far around the corner. William I watch your videos strickley for for the Spring scenes now. I noticed a Robin in the background at the start of your video. Here in NB Canada we received another blast of winter overnight which has replaced any snow melt progress. There remains several feet of snow on my garden to date. I look forward to watching the garden harvest videos. By that time I anticipate tilling my own garden.

Interesting to know your results. I will keep that in mind. Technical writers determine those instructions, and it is often possible to cheat and R&R in an easier fashion. I know because I wrote repair and overhaul manuals for diesel and aircraft turbine engines. Keep going! Cheers

If you haven't already done so, I suggest going over all the sensors you can and verifying their operation in a similar manner, based on whatever charts are available. If the info is lacking, I think all the temperature sensors most likely use the same resistance scale. I'm pretty sure this is true at least on my 86 60V6 GM. Also make sure the 5v reference going from the ECM to some of the sensors is on spec. Basically, try to check out the sensors/electrical system as comprehensively as you can. It's not too unlikely to have multiple things operating out of spec with an old vehicle. But replacing that faulty CTS should make a world of difference.

Things that need oiling benefit long-term from a spray can of MotorKote lubricant. As an example, my daughter borrowed her brother's Ford PU, and I needed under the hood to fix something. I discovered a reluctance to close and latch. Sprayed the stuff on the spring and latch. Son asked me what I had done because his buddy had the same Ford problem. Voila!

I think GM topped an Audi/VW service manual on that repair procedure. Just needs a random "special tool" requirement that you fashioned from duct tape (since the real one cost more than the car to buy), and the phrase "installation is the reverse of removal" as the last step. For future reference, running rich like that almost always demands a check of the coolant temperature sensor. You can likely get away without draining the coolant (unless it needs to be changed anyway), I'm sure no other mechanic bothers.... even at the dealer! Has the old GMC been converted to a planter yet? Plenty of places to hang plants too.

Stuck, clogged or just plain shot IAC valve/motor is probably the likely culperate to the other issue. The most ideal location for a CTS GM could have ever conceived of. Guess they thought the car would be turned into a refrigerator before that sensor went bad :)

For a quality vehicle, I highly suggest a Nissan, and an older one (2005) at that. We had a 2005 Pathfinder SE and it worked extremely well until my father towed a 2006 Outback camping yrailer with it in overdrive. That said, I do not tecommebd trying it for yourself, as it will cause the transmission signifigand (and expensive, possibly irreplacebly so) damage and cause serious jitters at around 40-60mph on the open road. We ended up getting a 2015 Toyota 4Runner Trail (were going to get a TRD Pro, but mother said no, so trail it is). So far it is holding up well enough.

I really like the way the hood opens up on that Buick LeSabre. On my Buick Century it opens like pretty much every other car out there. Because of this video, I'm tempted to do a better video of my car than what I did before. Anyhow, I'm curious to know why you have so many cars and how you got them. I'm trying not to be rude, but I'm curious. Is it like you and computers? I'm like that too, I have lots of computers and I grab them when ever I can. I'm hoping to grab a Power Macintosh 7600 tomorrow.

Where can I get that manual? When I look up Genuine GM manuals I only get Chiltons or Haynes. I want to get that manual. My Buick is having a wiring issue somewhere. The Brown and white stripe wire from cam sensor to ICM is putting out 10 volts- problem is that is signal wire from the cam sensor! Shouldn't it have no signal until sensor is plugged and and passes over the cam magnet? Thank you for the video and your help. You got a new subscriber
@uxwbill
@uxwbill 3 жыл бұрын
Any GM dealer should still be able to look up pages from the original manual. Otherwise, you go to eBay as I did, and you might just get lucky. (I checked just now for a 1989 model year and found a few. Bear in mind there were separate books for electrical and body.) Not sure about the issue you're having. The signal may change as the magnet passes over it, and the sensor may also load any voltage on that wire down (something to think about in case you made a measurement with the sensor disconnected -- your meter is almost certainly a high impedance/resistance device).

After my sisters experience with a Ford, they are not in my good books. She had a Ford Puma (stupid little sporty piece of junk) Heater didn't work, cigarette lighter? Nope, Radio? It did after she found the damn code, Tyres? bald as a baby's butt, front wheel bearing gone, doors that didn't close properly, and that was just the obvious problems, we didn't get to dig deeper because she took it out one day and it just randomly quit on her, would not start at all. I did tell her the badge on the hood was the problem but she didn;t like my sense of humour. lol

***** As someone who owns, or their immediately family owns, products from all 3 of the big American companies, you're in a better position to judge than most people! The two Fords we had were fairly reliable; we had a Fiesta that was just worn out and was scrapped a few months after someone caved the door in, and a European Escort that would've lasted a lot longer had my dad not forgotten to add oil and it seized. The only things that went wrong on that car otherwise were the exhaust falling off and the gearbox dying (due to mistreatment by its previous owner - my aunt).
