I had an ‘86. Most fun year of my life!
@rockineighties5 жыл бұрын
All the comments about how fast cars are now compared to this IROC with the TPI intake. Does it really matter how fast cars are now? Are they as fun to drive when you can't race them in daily driving conditions compared to how fun it would be to drive an '89 IROC that you don't have to get up to high RPM?! I own a 1997 Trans Am and I want a TPI intake on my engine, speed not being a care of mine when I want those lower RPM thrills that third gen guys talk about with their cars. I will stress this all to you, just because something is new doesn't necessarily make it better and we all focus too much on high horsepower numbers to ever be able to enjoy them when daily driving such cars. When all you can do is enjoy brief launches from green lights up to 50 mph before hitting traffic or going too fast in a speed zone, that slower IROC seems to take the cake when you need to go fast in a newer car to really enjoy it the same way at the same torque level! Think about that!
@67Zink5 жыл бұрын
My sentiments- Perfectly. I had a 3:73 gear and a 2500 Stall on my 5.7 and it was a trilling stop light racer. In a way it was more fun then my friend's LT1 and LS1 in normal driving conditions on the street. Unless you feel the torque at low RPM and own a TPI most get lost on paper high HP numbers.
@scottsmith65715 жыл бұрын
Get an 89 turbo trans am it’s a sleeper and it went 13.4 1/4 stock
@rockineighties5 жыл бұрын
@@scottsmith6571 Eh, I have had my 97 Trans Am for too long. I love the interior styling as much as the exterior, although she now has an LS style Trans AM hood to finish off the "look" I was going for. My biggest complaint is the engine, I resent having to rev up to beyond 5000 RPM before I can start enjoying the car, I just don't drive that way, I keep her below 5000 and my shift limit is actually at 5000. This is where I did research and since I am happy with my current axle gear ratio and don't want to stroke the engine since I drive her in winter, and since I can't throw a truck LS intake on my LT1, I had to look back at the predecessor intake to the LS1 intake, and that was the TPI! I already have a complete TPI intake system off of a '91 Camaro and the TPI base off of a '91 Vette so that I can use the EGR tube. I just need a machine shop to add material to the Vette TPI base and rework the bolt holes so that it can directly bolt on to my LT1 heads and so the ports will be properly aligned. Since the car is reverse-flow for coolant the original coolant passages in the TPI base don't need any modification, they simply won't be used! Short of wanting a 117 or 120 LSA cam with slightly less duration to mimic my stock cam and paired with 1.7 rockers, I should then have the thrill ride I am seeking for a daily driver.
@phillyphilhouse795 жыл бұрын
I don't know anything about cars, but couldn't you make this car go a lot faster by adding to the engine like they do in the fast and furious movies? Or would you have to replace the motor with something more powerful?
@williamfreeman33315 жыл бұрын
It was actually fast for it's time as far as all completely stock cars go.
@venomous1svt5 жыл бұрын
This car in Red was my very first car when I turned 16 back in 1996. Fun car & seemed very fast back then. Crazy how now compared to my Z06 vette & ZL1 Camaro it would probably feel slower than my regular daily drivers. But still a Iconic car, Wish I would of kept it & put it away in storage way back then
@3dsmaxrocks699 Жыл бұрын
I just turned 21 in 1989. Went up to Butler PA. and there was a little car dealer right before Zanotti's motorcycle sales that had this EXACT same car. Drove off the lot after about 3 hours of paperwork. Beautiful summer day. I'll never forget it. Joe Jackson's Steppin' Out was on the radio. Drove thru downtown Butler....turning heads at every light.

Though not considered powerful by todays standards I still think that TPI intake is the best looking one GM ever made. So much more stylish than any that came after.

@@edmelungeon2239 a World Class T5 can handle a lot of torque, I even prefer T5 over T56 because they are lighter. They sell automatics because American buyers prefer them. There's two kinds of T5 from that times, the ones in the V6 (non World Class) that can't handle big power, and the World Class in V8 that you find even in Mustangs. I been running my 2000 Firebird with one and a Land Rover 4.6 engine (AKA Buick 288) and it runs smooth.

I remember how the IROC was significantly faster than the base Z28 do to different gearing. I also remember the 5.0 5-speed was significantly faster than the 5.7 liter with automatic. The guidos were always in denial and bragged about their "bigger 350." Mine was an 85, carbureted Rochester Quadrajet, and i was fortunate to have a COMP Cam. It might have been about 275 horsepower. Rare combo 5-speed and locking T-tops. I cracked the driver's side t-top thanks to body flex and a hard shift into 2nd.
