Footage of the 1989 Pfingsttreffen Concert held in Marx-Engels-Platz (Schloßplatz) in Communist East Germany.
The annual Pfingsttreffen celebrations were held by the Free German Youth (FDJ) to promote the Socialist cause in the GDR. The concert was attended by various members of the Socialist Unity Party, including the head of state, Erich Honecker.
The concert was performed by hundreds of members of the Zentrales Musikkorps der FDJ in front of the now defunct Palast der Republik on May 14, 1989. Members of the FDJ dressed up in early 20th century uniforms of the Prussian Army complete with spiked "Pickelhaube" helmets famously worn by German soldiers during World War I.

East Germany respected Prussian tradition, this is evident under Erich Honecker's rule. In 1980, he restored the equestrian monument to Prussian King Frederick the Great in Unter den linden. After the 750th anniversary of Berlin in 1987, the GDR was allowed to fully embrace its Prussian heritage, and this footage serves as historical evidence to this statement. It seems today there are many debates as to whether or not the GDR embraced Prussian heritage. I believe this stems from the fact that many historical events like this one were lost to time and during the age of the internet they were no where to be found or discussed. This has a massive impact on how we perceive history and I think its important that this rare historical footage enters mainstream discussions and is seen by everyone!

One thing I think went sadly lost with the age of the Internet are these wonderful public concerts. I‘m under the impression that since the late 2000s, you just don‘t see these anymore. That‘s really some wonderful footage you found again! And Pickelhaubes never fail to impress! :D

It seems like they're referencing Der Hauptmann von Kopenick since the Officer is ranked as Hauptmann and he's leading a troop from a Garde regiment like in the story.

@@MaximusandHistory This also proves that Germany needs to be stronger, and have perfomances LIKE THIS way often, at LEAST once a year. Hard to believe 90% of the NVA is disarmed, proving that the modern Germany is too shy to allow NVA veterans to retire later. If only the ENTIRE NVA was integrated to the Bundeswehr and if Germany were united under a regime like in this video.

It's interesting that the permed and curly hairstyles of the crowd, particularly of the women, matched those of my classmates in high school in the United States back in 1989. Western influences must have been huge in the period right before the Berlin Wall fell. Thanks for sharing this video, Maximus. :)

I don’t think the styles were exclusively Western. Similar hairstyles could be seen in both East and West throughout the Cold War, trends and styles evolved in the same way on both sides of the wall.

Further to my previous post. Peter Hertel composed ballet Flick and Flock. This tune is a galop from the ballet. Josef Strauss composed a quadrille using music from the ballet. In 1995, Slovak symphony orchestra recorded it (Opus 187). Last movement is the galop.
