The Loretta Young Show

5 жыл бұрын

LADY IN A CORNER
Initial broadcast: December 11, 1989
This NBC special television movie constitutes Loretta Young's final appearance on film, culminating a seventy-two year career in Hollywood movies and on television.
Lady In A Corner features Miss Young playing the part of Grace Guthrie, a successful and seasoned fashion magazine publisher who fights a hostile takeover from a sleazy tabloid tycoon. Problem is, Grace doesn't realize one of her closest advisers is on the media mogul's payroll, and is actively trying to force her into selling out her publishing empire.
The cast includes; Brian Keith, Roscoe Lee Browne, Lindsay Frost, Christopher Neame and Bruce Davison as Grace’s son, Bill Guthrie.
Brian Keith (David Henderson) was an American film, television and stage actor who in his six-decade-long career gained recognition for his work in movies such as the Disney family film The Parent Trap (1961), the comedy The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming (1966), and the adventure saga The Wind and the Lion (1975), in which he portrayed President Theodore Roosevelt.
On television two of his best-known roles were those of bachelor-uncle-turned-reluctant-parent Bill Davis in the 1960s sitcom Family Affair, and a tough retired judge in the 1980s light hearted crime drama, Hardcastle and McCormick. He also starred in The Brian Keith Show, which aired on NBC from 1972-74, where he portrayed a pediatrician who operated a free clinic on Oahu, and in the CBS comedy series Heartland.
During the latter part of his life, Keith suffered from emphysema and lung cancer, despite having quit smoking ten years earlier. On June 24, 1997, he was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in his home in Malibu, California.
Roscoe Lee Browne was an American actor and director known for his rich voice and dignified bearing. He resisted playing stereotypically black roles, instead performing in several productions with New York City's Shakespeare Festival Theater, Leland Hayward's satirical NBC series That Was the Week That Was, and a poetry performance tour of the United States in addition to his work in television and film.
In 1976, Browne was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Single Performance by a Supporting Actor in a Comedy or Drama Series for his work on ABC's Barney Miller. In 1986, he won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Performer in a Comedy Series for his work on NBC's The Cosby Show. In 1992, he received a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actor in a Play for his performance as "Holloway" in August Wilson's Two Trains Running.
Browne died of stomach cancer in Los Angeles on April 11, 2007, aged 84. He never married and had no children.
Lindsay Frost is best known for playing the role of Betsy Stewart Andropoulos on the daytime soap opera As the World Turns from 1984 to 1988, a role which was previously played by actress Meg Ryan. She appeared on Crossing Jordan in the recurring role of Maggie from 2001 to 2006. In recent years she has also guest starred in a number of series including Lost, Boston Legal, Shark, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CSI: Miami, and Frasier.
Frost is currently (2018) a fine artist represented by The Art of the Game Galleries in Los Angeles.
Bruce Davison is an American actor and director of television, film, and theatre. He is well known for his starring role in the cult horror film Willard (1971), as well as his Academy Award-nominated and Golden Globe-winning performance in Longtime Companion (1989).
He also was featured prominently in the X-Men film franchise - through X-Men (2000) and X2 (2003) - as antagonist Senator Robert Kelly. More recently, Davison appeared in Fred Schepisi's Words and Pictures (2013), had a recurring role on The Fosters (2015-2016), and shares the screen with Miles Teller and Anna Kendrick in Get a Job (2016).

Loretta Young was such a great actress. Amongst many of those in the Golden Age of Hollywood. She looked wonderful here. Well into her 70's. This movie at this time was about where we are headed. She didn't want trash. Now to me it seems like there is nothing left for the imagination. I love the days of classic film. They had class.

That's because people, men, women and children were taught to care about how they presented themselves, their families, school etc. Now nobody appears to care about themselves, hate themselves and others who have a little more.

I'm sorry, you're far too late! The ATTITUDE and ATMOSPHERE in Hollywood has changed... The men and women in charge now have their OWN social agenda at play. They want you to accept their reality in movies and not the truth of life. Apparently, women are tougher, smarter and all round better than men, in fact, they don't even need them. They can do it all on their own. Men must sit in the corner. Romance and flirting doesn't exist.

Yes she was a beautiful woman inside and out. She had her first child with Clark Gable and had to hide it by putting her in an orphanage briefly and then adopting her. Her daughter found out the truth years later. If the truth got out, it would have destroyed Clark Gables’s and her career.

Please, Loretta Young was not a saint. She identified as a strict Catholic but she also had many affairs with married actors ( Spencer Tracy), marriages that she had annulled, a child with Clark Gable. So, she was a beautiful woman who was not perfect, but please she was just a normal woman. High morals? Well, she justified her actions while being sanctimonious. Still-- a normal woman imo.

I actually think that Loretta Young was awesome in both "Christmas Eve" and "Lady in a Corner". Of course, I like her in her classic movies, but there is something about her performances in both of these movies that almost outshines her early ones. Maybe these two movies reflect the kind of roles that she wanted to play in her early career, but they just weren't offered.

Surprised at LY being part of it since it shows the very thing it’s supposed to be against. Little girls had to pose for those photos practically naked. And the army women fighting half naked as well. I kept hoping her character would pick up Miss Dawson and kick her down the stairs. I certainly did not want her to end up in line for the main characters job at the end. 😬😩

I watched this entire movie because the comments were good. I hated it! all the arguing and then people caring only about stupid superficial things. I just don't get it.

I think she was 76 . And she still had her own teeth , her own grey hair and a shapely figure . A picture of wellness .

Even John Wayne had a plastic surgery and false teeth, and that was done in the '60's, so don't believe for a second that her much younger look is all natural! She didn't have such full face when a teenager.

In the early 1930s films, Midnight Mary, Employees Entrance, Big Business Girl, Man's Castle, They Call It Sin, and so many other Loretta Young movies in that era, she was the most beautiful and natural looking girl without all the glitzy makeup and severe hair styles that came later. I loved her pre-code movies more than her "holier than thou" later films.

The story idea was terrific. If it had been done with subtlety it might have been a terrific movie. It was as subtle as a jackhammer digging out rock for a new condo. I'm half way through now, don't think I'll bother with the rest. Bound to be a happy ending, no surprise there. Those 53 fords, especially the victoria as I recall the name, were terrific to see displayed in that way.

As always LORETTA YOUNG is beautiful and believable. And, a joy to see again so sorry she didn't get to portray Mother Theresa.

Did LY have a speech impediment??? Sure sounds like it in this movie. At times it sounds like she really is slurring her words. Something definitely not right there. At 76yrs old something's gotta give I guess! Amazing for her age however.

Miss Young broke one of her teeth, it was fixed but afterwards her speech was altered. It kind of came and went.

A dental problem and as we age our voices just tend to get deeper. I heard her lead a Rosary Group at the Desert Hospital Chapel not long before her death and her voice, although deeper was still mesmerizing.@@j.g.c.2494

@@richardmcleod5967 Mercury had horrible overgrowth in his upper jaw & a severe undergrowth in his lower jaw. His teeth were horribly misaligned & protrusive & fanned out completely covering the lower teeth & lip. That's what he needed surgery for. His teeth were aligned & pulled together & back so he could close his mouth, but he never had orthognathic surgery to correct his jaws, probably out of fear. It wouldn't have affected his pitch though if he had. I worked for dentists & orthodontists. Never did such repairs or realignment affect someone's ability to sing & especially if it's done early in life before it got as bad as his did. If he hadn't a least had his teeth aligned & pulled back on the upper the constant exposure to air would have resulted in bad gum disease & decay. He was lucky it didn't get that far & was at least able to get the aesthetics better. His pre-fame photos show it was much worse, in fact his upper teeth were so impossibly protrusive, not only was it very unattractive it was functionally bad & if he'd lived longer would have led to much worse dental & gum disease & pain. May he rest in peace.
