Game 1 - Pistons 109, Lakers 97
The Lakers played without Byron Scott, who pulled a hamstring in practice before Game 1, and were unable to slow down the Pistons' backcourt. Isiah Thomas scored 16 points in the first half to take the Pistons to an 11-point lead. Already shorthanded without Scott, the Lakers had to go deep into their bench when Michael Cooper, A.C. Green, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Orlando Woolridge all got into foul trouble. Detroit opened the second half on an 11-3 run and never looked back, cruising to a 12-point victory.
The Pistons were led by Thomas, who finished with 24 points and nine assists. His backcourt mate, Joe Dumars, added 22 points, and guard Vinnie Johnson scored 19 in 21 minutes off the bench. Magic Johnson and James Worthy each scored 17 points for the Lakers, who lost for the first time in the 1989 Playoffs.

As a Lakers fan I hated the '89 Finals. Without Magic and Scott they didn't have a chance. Dumars and Isiah were so good in that series.

Those two injuries thwarted the Lakers chances to threepeat. The difference in 1993 with Chicago is that the Bulls were healthy. The bad boys here had the same problem in 1991. What happened to L.A. in 1990? The Lakers made the finals again in 1991. They didn't even make the conference finals in '90.

@@brianmears3388 The Lakers had internal turmoil between Magic Johnson, the other players and Coach Pat Riley. Many of the Laker players revolted against Riley, and it was shown when they played Phoenix in the second round.

No disrespect to the Lakers, but as close as the Pistons came to beating the Lakers the year before I personally don't think it would have mattered if Byron Scott or Magic were healthy. The Pistons were not going to be denied. The series would have gone to 7 games. Of course we'll never know but take it from a Detroit Piston, Lions, Tigers and Red Wings fan. You win you win, you lose you lose. No excuses.

I agree. Even the Orlando Arena and Miami Arena--considered to be brand-new, state-of-the-art venues at the time when built in 1988/1989--are both just memories and holes in the ground now. The Pistons have shown no interest in a new arena since the Palace opened because it's still considered a "modern" venue.

Had Scott and Magic not been injured, this series could have been another classic! The Lakers were 11-0 in the playoffs till the finals and were playing as good as they did in '87- especially Scott! Even though they were swept, they were right there till the end in games 2,3, and 4! 10 days off after sweeping Phoenix killed them! Pat Riley ran them hard, and Magic and Scott both tore their hamstrings!

@Daniel Le Isiah still played after he sprained his ankle and, though he wasn't 100% in Gm. #7, he was still slightly effective. Scott missed the whole series and Magic played 1 1/2 games. So- no comparison my friend! Also, it's only Pistons fans who label it the "phantom foul!" Laimbeer fouled down-low, pushing his hip, which threw his balance off. Plus, the Pistons still had the ball with plenty of time to win it in Gm. #6 on a last shot, and they blew it. So, both of your points fall flat. Having 2/3rd's of the greatest backcourt in history out, who combined averaged 40pts a game was too much to overcome in '89. Had Scott and Magic played, I guarantee the series would have gone to 6 or 7 games. They swept their way(11-0)to the finals and were playing lights-out basketball, especially Scott!

Byron Scott and Magic were injured in this series. There should be an asterisk on the Piston's 1989 championship. Thomas knows this in his heart. He never truly beat Magic.

+Jc Future Yawn....teams deal with injuries all the time. Not giving the team who won proper credit is poor sportsmanship. Send your complaints and letters to Pat Riley, who decided to operate a Lakers boot camp before the Finals, effectively ensuring injuries.
@jcfuture1045

+Frank O During a session of NBA Open Court, Thomas himself said he wished that that the Lakers had been at full strength, so he could feel like he beat a true Laker Showtime team. You want to beat your opponent at his best. Winning something by default is never satisfying for a true champion like Thomas. It has nothing to do with sportsmanship. Maybe you're satisfied with beating your opponent when he is weak and down, but Thomas is not. He's a true competitor.
@franko8858
@franko8858 8 жыл бұрын
Jc Future Well, yeah, but to say there should be an asterisk is a bit much. You are invalidating their championship. It might not be truly satisfying but teams win all when other team aren't at full strength, or have injuries, but it is a part of the game.. So, should we just say no one won that year? Whose to say that they just don't beat them any way, regardless of injury? And assuming that "im satisfied with beating my opponent when he is weak" is a bit much too, as you are overgeneralizing.
@jcfuture1045
@jcfuture1045 8 жыл бұрын
+Frank O So, are you satisfied with their 1989 Championship? Or are you not satisfied? It seems like you're satisfied with it. If I was a Pistons fan, I'd be disappointed and put the asterisk on there myself. But if you're satisfied, you're satisfied.
@franko8858
@franko8858 8 жыл бұрын
Jc Future I'm not a Pistons fan at all. So, you make it sound like the Pistons should say, "wow, we won, but we really didn't win because the Lakers weren't at full strength. I guess it shouldn't count. Oh well. Maybe we should just give the trophy back." I'd be satisfied, you win, you win. They are so many variables to winning, and it goes well beyond injuries and what not. Maybe you play a team you don't match up well against and you get knocked off. Maybe something goes in your favor, like a lucky break. You are acting like this is some kind of crazy thing that happened, when in fact, it's not. It's sports, and players get hurt, and things happen. And, for what it is worth, the Pistons deserved this, regardless of what happened.

Mahorn's back problems was the reason he was left unprotected during the 1989 Expansion Draft. According to teammate James Edwards, the Pistons decided to protect him over Mahorn in that draft at the last moment. Edwards was talking to the Minnesota Timberwolves. He expected to be picked by the T'Wolves, but that last-minute decision changed that outcome.
