This game was the coming out party for Fred Stokes. Two huge plays on the Chargers 1st 2 offensive plays.

Stan Humphries who can be seen at 09:19 & 10:05 standing by Joe Gibbs would later become a Chargers Quarterback and take the Chargers to there only Superbowl in 1994.

GIbbs should have let Rypien go in 92 after his holdout and started Humphries, he was ready and Rypien really held the team back in 92 with horrible QB play.

It's funny how Dick Enberg mentioned in the second quarter the holdout of former Chargers RB Gary Anderson during the 1989 season. His holdout opened the door for Marion Butts to start his solid five-year career for the Chargers. Butts rushed for 4,297 yards and scored 31 times for the Chargers from 1989 to 1993. And his days in San Diego included one 1,000 yard season and leading the Chargers in rushing yards every year he played for them.

The Chargers may have been 7-9 in 1989 instead of 6-10 if Cedric Figaro would have gained possession of the ball and then intercepted that pass at 1:14:41 🤬. He probably wouldn't have scored because Earnest Byner would have caught him near the Charger 20-yard line. That pick could have taken away three points (a Chip Lohmiller 31-yard field goal) and the score would have been 14-10 San Diego. Figaro's interception could have led to the Chargers driving down for a touchdown or field goal and it could have been 17-10 (field goal) or 21-10 (TD) San Diego in the third quarter.

Oh man the one hour ten minute mark #91 is covering a receiver. #44 is rushing the passer? Whenever SD decided to dedicate #91 to rushing the passer was a good day for SD fans. ~Brian

Although their record was nothing to write home about the (1988 - 1991) Chargers were definitely not devoid of talent. They had solid players and a few superstars on both sides of the ball. Their Achilles heel was at the QB position and their management. Once Stan Humphries and Bobby Ross came onboard on 1992, they made the playoffs and that was after starting the season 0 - 4. Go figure.

In the Dan Henning years on offense they had names such as Anthony Miller, Nate Lewis, Marion Butts, Rod Bernstine, Quinn Early, Jamie Holland (so fast), Arthur Cox was decent at tight end, all-purpose back Darrin Nelson (underused), a young but productive Ronnie Harmon, a young Shawn Jefferson, and others. But the QB play was average at best. All those offensive weapons I named deserved better. Shit, in 1988 they had Gary Anderson, the underused Tim Spencer, and Lionel James (RIP) at RB but so-so QB play. Anderson had a 1,000 yard season in '88 but nobody cared but Charger fans and the line who blocked for him.

Two dropped interceptions in this game at 1:14:41 (Cedric Figaro) and 1:25:41 (Elvis Patterson) by the Chargers. And they wonder why they lost this game. If Figaro would have gotten his pick and Patterson would have gotten his, that's six points erased off the scoreboard for the Reskins. Chargers could have won this game 21-20. You NEVER drop sure interceptions in tight games.

Billy Ray Smith (#54) couldn't do what he did at 1:26:14-1:26:16. That shit is outlawed today. It's hard enough being a long snapper on PAT's and punts, and then having a dude line up over you while your head his down and in a prone position 😨.

The '87 NFC Championship has a copyright block on it but I do have '85 Raiders/Browns. I already have several other games scheduled but I'll try to get that one up in the next couple of weeks.

Coryell started losing his touch around 1986 and Dan Fouts wasn't what he was in the 1970 to early 1980s. Dan Henning from 1989 to 1991, never had a franchise quarterback to go along with running backs Marion Butts, Rod Bernstine, and Ronnie Harmon. Receivers Anthony Miller, Quinn Early, Bernstine, and Nate Lewis deserved better play at QB.
