Everyone talks about Steffi being the only player in history to win each of the Slams 4 times, which is incredible. But what is also incredible is that she also successfully defended each of the Grand slam titles at least twice! No other player has done that even once! That’s simply AMAZING!!

@@SingChan0218 you are just an idiot. She successfully defend all slam before Seles came into the scene. Remember the number 10-5 (lifetime h2h) During Seles peak (1991-93) it's still Steffi who leads their h2h (3-2).

@dentist 2309, There are some who question her record because of the seles incident. And yes it was a horrible thing that happened however no one gave Steffi those wins she earned them. There were others who had victories over Steffi who had Their chances. I believe Arantxa Sanchez Vicario had at least two chances in two grand slams to beat Steffi. But in true form Steffi fought back and won. And that is because she is an amazing athlete in every sense of the word super fast a great serve and tremendous forehand. Then her nasty slice which some consider her weakness I think not. Not only can she use it so take you out of position it is also a offensive shot. Especially on the return where it comes at he opponent so low they struggle to return it. And that is why she has been able to accomplish what she has. Thank you for those stats I was aware of the first one but not the second. Aloha from Hawaii 🌸🌸🌸

The only player men or women who won at least every Major four times! No Court, no Navratilova, no Williams, no Federer, no Djokovic, no Nadal... This demonstrates her extraordinary versatility which had not reached any other player. Furthermore she is the only player men or women who achieved the "Super Slam" within one year - WTA Championship, Olympic Gold Medal and all 4 Majors 1987 (WTA Ch.) up to 1988 (Olympic Gold medal). Only two other players achieved a career "Super Slam" - Andre Agassi and S Williams.

This was Graf at her imperious best....she made it look so easy. There's so much variety in her game, unlike that of Monica Seles, who just bashed the ball from both sides of the court. It's no wonder that she won the most grand slams ( 22 slams) of anyone before the age of 29. Had she decided to stay on a few years more, she would definitely have broken Margaret Court's 24 slams. Serena has won 23, but she's 41 years old and still playing. To me, Steffi is ther greatest of all time. Period.

two of the greatests ever. in a time when wimbledon grasscourt were much faster than nowadays. what made it an overwhelming challenge for baseliners to win .cause there wasnt only one uniformed way of playing as it is today. the fast courts put serve and volleyers like martina clearly into the pole position. as the slow courts of paris favoured the baseliners. it was a battle of different playing systems, a battle of two generations and different personalities - and a battle between the two best payers ever. it was just unforgetable.

Winning on clay, turning around, winning on grass 4 weeks later, turning around, winning on fast hard court 8 weeks later! Helen Wills did it twice (1928 & 1929). Maureen Connolly did it once (1953). Margaret Court did it once (1970). Billie Jean King did it once (1972). > Until then the USO was played on grass as well. Martina Navratilova did it once (1984). Serena Williams did it once (2002). I was always impressed by her comments in interviews. She never made excuses and was so honest. And though she did come to net, she always honestly said she wasn't all that confident doing it. She would have won so much more easily had she been able to volley a bit better. But she does it again in the US Open in big points in the 3rd set to defeat Martina once again. She always had trouble with Martina. She barely lost the semifinal to Martina in NY in 1991. Had she won, she would have defeated Seles in the final. Not a slam on Seles, just that Steffi always won over her on Hard Court.

Volleys, half-volleys, lobs, overheads, slice backhands, short court forehands, one-handed backhands... What happened to the women's game? It was once as good as the men's game. Indeed, it was Steffi who brought complete parity by hitting forehands from the backhand corner. Guess it took too much athleticism and skill to play that way. So, after Steffi, the women's game devolved.

During Graf’s time still in 1999 the women became faster and more powerful and could beat Graf (who I love so much). Serena beat her at only age 17 and from then on the nature of the women’s game was already being revolutionized by the William Sisters (that’s the truth) with more power, more speed, athleticism, hitting the ball much earlier, standing in the baseline to return a serve with a winning return, strength from both forehand and backhand, the introduction of the Drive volley etc. If you followed tennis like I was in the 80s through to the 90s like I was, you’d understand the Revolution that was sweeping through the women’s game by the Williamses
@LDVTennis
@LDVTennis Жыл бұрын
@@kojoharrison630 Including the non-sanctioned match in HK, Graf defeated Serena the first two times they played. In the only match Serena won, Graf led by a break in the third set. Had Serena defeated Steffi all three times or defeated her decisively at least once, you'd have more of an argument, but Serena did NOT. ... Neither Serena nor Venus had the athletic ability to play like the men. By and large, the men center their games around the forehand and the ability to run around the backhand. They can do that even on clay because of superior footwork, agility, and forehands. As I said above, only Steffi achieved complete parity with the men's game because she had the athleticism to center her game around her forehand. That's the truth. Here's more of the truth: Serena, Venus, and today's women's game have an image problem. Too often, the women don't look like they are in the best shape. All the drive volleys and baseline bashing make for boring tennis. Steffi never had that problem. In all her videos, there is ample (sometimes spectacular) variety to her game and she always looks like the best athlete to have ever played the game.

@@LDVTennis As I said in my post I love Steffi and I loved her first before the Williams Sisters. Serena was only 16 and soon to be 17 when she played Steffi for the first time. Steffi was already well-established but you could see the emergence of the ‘New Order’ in women’s Tennis in the form of Serena and Venus and Graf was on her way out. Had she not retired the Williamses would have done to her what she did to Martina Navratilova. It was clearly a changing of the guard for all to see and everyone who matters in WTA recalls this emergence and the astonishing raising of the bar. The Williamses would have been too powerful for Steffi from both wings and they were much faster and returned every ball offensively while turning defence into ferocious attack all the time! They were studying in between trying to achieve Degrees and so stayed away from the tour periodically but when they returned they still beat everyone. As for the Williamses game being classed by you as boring, that’s your opinion and I don’t in a million years share it because they revolutionize the women’s game and all the WTA legends (BJ King, Navrat, Evert, Steffi herself, Davenport and all the commentators) always give credit where it’s due and they in no uncertain terms pronounce the Williamses (particularly Serena)as the best the women’s game has seen just by the sheer measure of their game style at their best and the fact that they changed the game completely!! These are the facts I’m sticking with because I witnessed it right from the beginning. I never thought My Steffi’s speed and athleticism could be bettered but truth is the Williamses proved it and changed the face of the women’s game. Anyway you take great care and stay safe 🙏🏾👍🏾❤️

The result never really in doubt. Steffi losing her concentration a bit in that second set, but really putting her foot down in the third set. It underlines I think how much confidence she lost 1990-92 when she could look anxious and lost on court at times. Amongst other reasons, I suspect 1987-89 took a hell of a lot out of her mentally and emotionally.

@Max E it must have absolutely devastated her. I think though perhaps a little bit of the rot set in a bit earlier. She played a very poor Australian open by her standards, scraping though matches. When she had to take several months off in early 1990 due to the thumb injury she also apparently said that she was surprised how little she missed tennis. So many other players like her who've had amazing runs over several years then have a dip (happened to Serena, Federer, Djokovic, Navratilova...) It must take so much out of them on so many levels. No doubt though that the blackmail scandal made things a million times worse. Sadly, Steffi is still having problems with her family. Her brother Michael appears to have really lost it mentally and Steffi has had to apply to become his legal guardian.

wikipedia googletranslate 1990-1992: Press hype and a new rival Graf's unbroken dominance continued into April 1990. Between 1988 and the Australian Open in January, she won eight of the nine Grand Slam tournaments played. After her third win in Melbourne, Graf won in Tokyo, Amelia Island and Hamburg. She had not lost a game since the French Open final in June of the previous year. Graf's longest winning streak and their superiority meant that the expected victories were only measured by the number of games played or the total duration of matches. Pundits speculated on the few victories left to erase Navrátilová's record of 74 straight match wins. In the spring of 1990, father Peter Graf was targeted by the German tabloid press. The Bild newspaper claimed an affair with a nude model with whom he had fathered a child. At the height of these revelations, his daughter had to admit defeat at the German Open in Berlin for the first time to the young, up-and-coming Yugoslav Monica Seles. It was Graf's first loss after 66 straight wins, the second-longest winning streak of all time. Last year, at the age of fifteen, Seles brought Graf to the brink of defeat in the semifinals of the French Open. She became more and more a serious challenger for Graf, who also suffered an unusual number of defeats against other competitors during this time: in 1990 (in Melbourne against Mary Joe Fernández), 1991 (in Wimbledon against Gabriela Sabatini) and 1992 (again in Wimbledon against Monica Seles), Graf won only one Grand Slam tournament per year. The other Grand Slam titles went to Monica Seles in 1991 and 1992. On March 10, 1991, Graf had to hand over the lead in the world rankings to Seles for the first time. This was preceded by a defeat against her former doubles partner Gabriela Sabatini at the WTA tournament in Boca Raton (USA). The final of the Olympic tennis tournament in Barcelona in 1992 also brought a surprise: Graf, the overwhelming favorite, lost to the 16-year-old American Jennifer Capriati. However, Graf won three out of five games against Seles when she was number one in the world. btw wikipedia googletranslate : 1990-1992: Press hype and a new rival Graf's unbroken dominance continued into April 1990. Pelm FBPNDD @Raju Saha with the same good training for her, circumstances ect, sure, martina navratilova is more talented than serena williams but is also tactically smarter, which in turn e.g. maybe that led to the fact that martina had refined her strokes and movement sequences a little less than she would/will do if she sees herself in more and more distress and or it would be tighter, I don't know where I would list , so far , martina in terms of talent , or rather so far not seen many vids to games with her but so far probably on 3 - 5, on 2 hanna mandlikova, on 3 maybe monica seles (difficult so far, with under because of her , at least about 1990 - 2000 , unusual for most players two-handed playing style (also she is more left-handed than right-handed) , .., wikipedia :" .. The 1.78m tall left-hander used both her forehand and backhand ambidextrous. More unusually, she didn't wrap around when changing sides. Given her ambidextrous playing style, Seles was able to play extreme angles play, which opens up the opposing field wide. The two-handed style of play also ensured a highly concealed execution of the shot, making it difficult to anticipate the shots. One of her trademarks was her powerful vocalizations when hitting hard shots. This characteristic has repeatedly caused controversy with opponents (among others Nathalie Tauziat, Martina Navratilova, Katerina Maleewa) who asked them not to do this during the competition. .. "

the main reason is may be widely unknown among international tennis fans. Grafs crises was caused by cracks in what had been her undestroyable fortress of emotional stability and mental strength. the place where she could leave behind outside pressure and expectations: the family. it was exactly the day before the final of the German Open 1990, when germany biggest tabloid let a bomb explode: "bild" headlined that peter graf had an affair with a young redlight destrict girl who was blackmailing him financially, threatening to make their affair public; additionally she (falsely) claimed being pregnant - what lead to a pictured tabloid headline on the frontpage: "is this steffis sweet little sister?" the affair dominated german press headlines and public for weeks - and caused cracks between steffis parents which eventually culminated into their divorce. It doesnt need much psychological insight to assume the affect on steffi. being unbeaten since 66 consecutive matches and on the reach to break the all time record of 72 consecutive wins, Graf lost the next day first time to monica seles in two sets - and also lost two weeks later in the french open final (where she wasnt able to close the first set although she had 5 consecutive setpoints. Reflecting some days later on that day, Steffi said: " i shouldnt have played the berlin final. physically i was on the court, but mindwise i was far away"".there is also an article on bleacher report, quoting steffi : "i did not just loose against seles. i lost against german press. i ll never stop hating these people who destroy my family for money". the longtime effect on Grafs game is documented by her match results: Steffi is not only loosing against monica. she is loosing to a lot of players . players who before didnt have any chance to win. Its the beginning of what culminates in loosing the number 1 position. the stabbing of monica seles by a deranged "fan" of steffi is tragic in multiple ways: tragic for monica who beytrayed of the chance to continue her unbelievable run of success .its tragic for us who were betrayed of an already prickling rivalery. and its also tragic for steffi who not only felt deeply shattered that this idiot was refering to her; she was also betrayed of the chance to show that this rivalery was may be far from being decided yet. she was betrayed of the chance to regain the top position by competition. Not many were and are aware of the fact that Steffi was in reach. At the time of the stabbing, she had permanently tightened the distance. If Graf would have won some weeks later the French Open, she would have been number 1 again.
