This is one of a number of strange ideas that were circulating from the early days; HIV doesn't cause AIDS, what today in 2022 we might call 'Fake News'.
I remember AL721 the "real" cure for AIDS that turned out to be egg white. Along with many other crazy suggestions it was very sad to talk with scared, frightened and desperate people looking for a cure. Some turned to religion, which took over their whole lives, and others to this kind of denial. The problem is that the arguments which might have had some merit, got lost in the anger, fear and posturing of the way these ideas were presented.
Watch this along side both Right to Reply programmes.
The one for this programme: • 1990 06 16 Right To Re...
and the AZT one: • 1992 03 28 Right to Re...
You can read about Prof. Duesberg here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_D...
Wikipedia describes the director/producer - Joan Shenton:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joan_Sh...
"Shenton is well known as a prominent HIV/AIDS hypothesis critic; in 2012 investigative health journalist Brian Deer wrote for The Guardian that she "comes across as the queen of denial".[1] Shenton has no medical or scientific training. Yusef Azad, director of policy and campaigns at the National AIDS Trust summarized Shenton's views as "scientific illiteracy" and conspiracy mongering.[10]"

It is true that for those drug addicts , my country scientists did some research before, found out that drugs(etc:nacortin...) actually weaker human immune system , first many drugs found out to be a serious and major cause of weakening a human immune system, that is why for those drug addict , they are very easy to feel sick, most of the time you find them fatigue, skinny, very easy to be infected by viruses or bacterias and get sick.

Michael Callan died in 1993 . He was featured in the movie Philadelphia , he’s singing at costume party . Although , he was able survive for over a decade which was rare, he still struggled with bouts of PCP and other opportunistic infections and eventually succumbed to the virus at the age of 38. He worked alongside Dr Sonnabend, and R Berkowitz to create the first safe sex pamphlets . Mind you at this time he was a believer in the multi factor theory , basically saying no virus existed that caused AIDS, it was the result of an overloaded beat down immune system due to the many repeated infections including ,STI, hep c, CMV, HPV, parasites ,shingles . Michael was a beautiful young man inside and out from what I have seen and read -- I just read “How To Survive A Plague” by David France hence the additional insight

After all that Michael Callan said about the life he was living then most people only feel comfortable blaming a virus, it’s definitely not influenced by all the money thats generated 😂😂😂😂😂😂

Sadly, there were a LOT of people with HIV in the 1980s & early 1990s that took this idea seriously and went into denial that they had HIV, stopped taking AZT (with somewhat good reason due to it's high dosage toxic effects) and their HIV progessed to AIDS, eventually passing away due to AIDS-related complications. HIV was so mysterious and scary in the 1980s and mass serio-convertions initially started North America in the 1970s, but on the 70s HIV was even thought of, but was present. Doctors and scientists, in the 1980s, were struggling to find out how people got HIV/AIDS (formerly ARC/GRID) or how it could be possibly cured, along with the phobia and political red tape that surrounded it.

Stopping AZT mono therapy wasn't necessarily an irrational decision for many people. Because HIV develops resistance to single drugs fairly readily, AZT by itself only worked for 6-12 months and then became ineffective and the disease resumed its relentless progression. It was only when it was combined with at least two other antiretrovirals from the mid 1990s on that there was a truly effective treatment for HIV/AIDS.

I'm sure that this was well meaning at the time, but, with hindsight, has turned out to be totally misguided. Yes, it's true that HIV does not always develop into AIDS, but it soon became apparent that in most people's immune systems, the virus worked away at the CD4 cells on a continuous path.untill they were almost entirely depleted. The lower the cell count dropped, the greater the chance of opportunist infections. In my own case, I was asymptomatic for 25 years, and my CD4 count had dropped to 46 before the sh** hit the fan. Thankfully, our understanding developed, and AIDS is no longer a death sentence, but a chronic manageable condition. Trust me, you don't want it.

Now days young gay men want HIV known as bug chasers. They feel like it’s a right of passage as a gay man and do not fear this disease any longer. Bare back parties are a constant theme now and no one tells their hiv status nor wear condoms. It’s astounding to see where this fear started and where it is now. Gay men want “ the gift” so they can be liberated to have more sex with more men without worrying about hiv/aids as it’s manageable now days. It’s sad to see this trend in young gay men these days.

It's easy to criticise this programme with the benefit of hindsight, but this was early in the outbreak, and the scientific and medical community had little understanding of the disease at that time.

From Google Translate: "If the scientific community had little knowledge, how come they affirmed since 1984 that HIV caused AIDS? Before making these declarations they had to verify their hypothesis. These hypotheses were so bad that Luc Montagnier had to recognize that Hiv alone is incapable of causing AIDS, Montagnier was the one who discovered the hiv virus” And the debate goes on - in the meantime I’ll just deal with the realities of life today. (Y el debate continúa; mientras tanto, solo me ocuparé de las realidades de la vida actual.)

I want to ask some of these people what made them so confident in their HIV-denialism that they’d talk about it with their full chest on TV? HIV being the cause of AIDS is objective reality, like gravity and germ theory. It’s just a fact. What was it like being so wrong, and how much harm do they think they caused spreading HIV denialism?

That was comical when they thought poppers (amyl nitrate) caused AIDS. Even a child could comprehend how absurd that proposition was. Duesberg is STILL holding onto to his preposterous theories. 😂😂

Pretty sure his opinion on that isn't that black/white. Seems like he thinks they are more of a contributor to one's likelihood to manifest a particular immune state and symptomology.

@Zockblatt Shickleblender aids existed before HIV, you don't need a virus to have aids. African AIDS is from malnutrition, American AIDS is more from heavy drug usage. Also you cannot find the HIV in semen.
