Found a mint one, back in 2003: 16v, 1991, Oak Green with 59k on the clock. I paid 3900 quid for it. I drove it once or twice a week for about 5 months, then sold it for 4k. I bumped into the young lad who bought it a few months later, while pissed up in Walkabout or some such shithole. He told me how much he was loving it, and his girlfriend reported that he went mental when she put her shoes on the seat. 'Good lad!' I said. I drunkenly offered him 10k for it, and he laughed and said no. I wonder where that lovely machine is now...

My cousin has Golf mk2 GTI G60 edition one in almost brand new condition. It is a thing of beauty.

I owned a 1990 8v Mk2 GTI and loved everything about it. No power steering or electric windows just a big smile on my face whenever I drove it. I noted the ClubGTI badge, back in the day I was the club secretary. Happy memories 👍

I have such good memories of my MK2 Golf. I was my first car, a black 1991 model with the 1.8 8V carburettor engine. I kept it for six years and in that period i learned how to fix it. Never let me down and took me wherever i needed and wanted to go. Last year i drove it to Wolfsburg, to see where and how it was born. 3 months ago, that all came to an end when someone smashed it up with a brick. I repaired it to a driveable condition, but found someone who wanted to buy it and restore it to its old glory. That good hope was also crushed, as that person drove it into a ditch at high speed. I shed a tear when i saw the picture of it in the newspaper.

In terms of passion there really is no difference between this and a million dollar Ferrari. Bravo to Petrolicious for putting the spotlight on the more nimble cars out there. Having said that, calling it a sports car might be overdoing it a little.

I used to own a bone stock 1990 GTI wolfsburg edition with bbs ra. Was from san francisco calif area. It was loved then neglected. Great drivers car. I sold it about 8 years ago to a guy who was taking it back to texas. Mine was developing the usual electrical issues even after new alternator and battery. Most likely an electrical drain somewhere. Great car. My suspension was beat. they just need love. Id rather have a mk2 any day over mk3 or mk4 vw

Probably the coolest GTI ever made. With the MK3 GTI VR6 being slightly behind it.

One of the most fun cars I have owned, much better than the mk3 16v, improved by some choice 2.2 Audi (same basic block) parts bin specials was actually quicker to 60 than Octavia VRS I had at the same time. If you can find a good one buy it!

I got one from my uncle who bought one out on a field for $700 10 years ago. He started converting it with GTI pieces but gave it to me 3 years ago coz he lost interest. I've since been slowly modifying and restoring it. It didn't even run properly! Just enjoying and loving the journey but the best has been the people I have met because of the car. Oh and every chance I get, I take it back to my uncle for him to drive. The smile on his face after every drive is the most rewarding thing!

That brings back old memories..i learned to drive in that car, my Mum drove one back in 94`. Loved it! Couldn`t have started my driving career with a better car..

My dad got a second hand Mk2 GTD for a really good price back when he was studying in France in the early 90s. Till this day, he still regrets selling it.

Thanks for the memories M8. I had a 1989 gti (US) and it was an amazing car. Despite getting broken into frequently and I was too broke at the time to fix the exhaust (i used coat hangers to keep it mounted, lol that would break after 100 miles or so). but the car was trouble free for the most part and served me well. I gave it to my brother with 100k miles on it, and he drove it for another 100k in college. Was still driving around the San Francisco area last time we saw it many years ago. I always envied you that got the 90 because I wanted those headlights.

i have a 1990 mk2 16v jetta in black, everything original other than suspension and exhaust. i love the damn thing and never see others out here in the US. Always get smiles and stories of ex owners wishing they never sold it. Its a full hearted spirited machine but the truth of reality is that age did not hold up too well with this car, its fragile and has many issues every couple months. its my first car but as a 17 year old in highschool and a job i cant keep up with it. itll be sad to see her go but i hope she goes to someone who can shock full life back into her and keep her proper :)

There's just something about the shape of the MK2 Golf, nothing will ever look as beautiful.

The Golf II GTI is an iconic car, but I liked the Scirocco GTX16v and the Corrado G60. My favorite from those hot hatch days though was the Kadett GSi16v, fastest hot hatch I ever drove on the German autobahn back then.

The Mark II gti IMO led the "hot hatch" trend. Those who are intimately familiar with these cars know their value, when the rest of the world catches on I believe this will be the next "bubble" car, so get one now. And as we say every week, great job Petrolicious.

You don't get more hot hatch than the classic GTIs. These have to be beloved by the UK fans. So accessable to the average enthusiast. It's what being a car guy is all about. Making a good car great and yours

My first car was the MKII GTI 1.8L 8v. I've had a few modern cars since then but nothing compares to the GTI as a drivers car.

VW GTI and Gen 1 Scirocco were my all time favorites-I used to dream about owning these in my younger years.

Some of my absolute favorite memories in life were behind the respective wheels of my 83 MK2 Scirocco [learning to drive a stick after my brother gave it to me, and driving back and forth from college in VT] and my 99 MK3 GTI vr6 [taking my son to the races at Lime Rock for the first time, and driving to the Canadian GP]. As so aptly expressed here, these truly are the people's sporting cars. Every day reliable [maybe not the Scirocco lol]. Fun. Quick. Analog handling and feel. Comfortable and useful. Not so powerful as not to be able to be pushed hard safely. Not so fancy as to worry [massively] about chips and minor parking dings. Accessible. I'd love to own one again someday, or maybe a Corrado, even a low budget [lol] 944 [I know, keep dreaming, especially as prices ramp]. But here's to driving quick, light, nimble little cars [and in my case riding low-hp motorbikes] and making it all fit in to an otherwise [fairly] "ordinary" life. I wish I had a 911 GT3 RSR [and an 1299 Panigale], but there's other things in life, and the living of it. And then there's the power of wishing itself. "Merely" very good is great in that way. Just like the GTI.

I miss my car. He was at 89 GTI. But with square-eyed headlights. Made for the US market in Pennsylvania. 16 valve. When I was in school I read the accolades of motor trend 10 best. But finally got one ship box condition p - t. It ran well I had a hole in the floor pan you could see the road. Due to salt to keep the snow and ice off the roads. It came with might and snow tires. Went through snow like a snow cat. Handle curves like no other car I drove before. You could feel the squat in the corners stable. Fun card to drive. Had three cars. Not that I was rich. But it was cheaper to buy another car than fix the one I was driving. But temporary parked the car. Then while parked the car got flooded water to top of shoulder adjust seat belt. Then went to salvage yard a couple weeks after the flood. The car freaked out the tow truck driver due to the fact it had snakes in the car whether they were grass snakes copperheads I do not know but when I talk to the guy his face turned white. So the car full of snakes went to the crusher. After leaving it's final parking spot by a swamp.

I want one so bad my dad has one on the drive but it needs so much work doing to it, I’m thinking of taking it on myself and restoring it and having it as my own car

I owned a ‘91 Mk II that was Montana Green with 8V motor. I added a Techtonics exhaust and a short shift linkage, otherwise kept it stock. This video brings back nice memories of some spirited driving in that little box. Interior plastic bits would randomly fall off, but were easy to snap back in place. Door handle would break every few years ... but like everything on this car = easy fix (and cheap). Silly stuff aside, it was one of the more fun daily drivers that I have owned.

Excellent video, Andrew. I love my Mk2 too, had it since 1996 and am the 2nd owner. Ultra reliable and is still my everyday car. The perfect modern classic. Shopping trips, long trips, memorable drives on twisty roads, carries all my RC planes, economical, low-maintenance, it does it all. To the person who said a Peugeot 205 GTi is better (a great car, I've driven one), I would just say that it doesn't have the same build quality which is a huge point in the Golf's favour. You still see plenty on the roads but how often do you see a Pug? Grahame

It's funny to see how divisive the comments are..."unreliable, terrible, boxy" to people who haven't actually owned one! I have an '87 jetta 2 door and its an amazing car to drive and although it's not fast, it feels quick and has such great handling. The looks aren't anything spectacular, but they have held up well and have a clean straight look in a world of aggressive, over-styled cars

Bought an 8v GTI new in 1988. Grey met. Loved it. Needed longer legs in 5th though. 19mph/1000rpm makes for busy motorway driving. Used to get 42mpg on a run too.

I purchased a "90" GLI (in rough shape) and rebuilt the motor, changed tranny & motor mounts, all axles, gaskets, belts and clutch my self. Then I drove it for 3 years before it was rear ended and totaled.

Loved my Mk2 16V in Oak Green Metallic - such an amazing driver’s car. It was 3 years old when I bought it, and was the bees knees. I still think of this car as my favourite car; even having a 993 Carrera 4 now, I had as much fun in that car as the Porsche. Lovely video.

I love the Golf Mk II as it was there around my early teens. Mechanically trust worthy and solid - a wonderful car I still enjoy to see on the streets. A true classic but just as it is said, “useable”.

Years ago, I tried to purchase a Mk2 brand new. Could not make a deal I could afford so I let it pass. Later I wound up purchasing a New 2003 Mk4 20th Anniversary (25th to those in Germany) With all the toys. It was a fantastic car and brought me back to those days. Just a lovely car sir!

A mk2 gti is a good investment right now. There are still so many available because they were well built. But they continue to get more and more popular...there is always some genius braking one for parts to make an extra buck. other hot hatches like the 205 and renault 5s are more expensive because they are rarer...just wait until the mk2 has dwindled even more in numbers . the 16v..If you have one of these in good condition then you have a solid investment. A rallye or g60 is gold. I estimate the value of a mk2 after 10 years is likely to triple relative to the state of the car.

First new car I owned. It was the only way I was able to get my ass into a German car. Thing would run at triple digits all day and felt like it was doing 55 mph. Very fun car.

I owned 3 consecutive VW GTIs. A great performing car with the added bonus of flexibility of use.

We had one of these back in the day. It was a great car, really reliable with an engine that seemed to get better the more miles it did. I remember i was red lining it away from a roundabout one time and suddenly there was a huge cloud of blue smoke behind me. I thought id blown the engine , but it was fine. Strong car.

I used to own one 8v gti, one of the latest here in Spain m-my reg plate. When handling it correctly it had a great mpg... but who want to drive such a car in a correctly way. Its a great car for small roads like these

I have a 92 GTI 16v I bought in 99. These are not at all common in the USA. Over the years, I have added Neuspeed Sway Bars and front Stress Bar. Neuspeed Shift Kit with Weight. All new suspension components and KW Coilovers. Just put a new headliner in at an interior shop. Fixing it up for the 3 yr old and new infant to get around town when we are not on the long tail bicycle. Getting it reliable for a 1500 mile road trip to a reunion car show in my home town. I debated selling it, but I think I will just make it as reliable as possible. Maybe paint it in time (same original Tornado Red).

Great video, it's all about the 16v, dropping a 2.0 ABF really makes a difference.

You can do few simple mods and still keep it original, like the WUR mods to the K-jet and put an exhaust cam on the intake side with a bit of a lumpy idle, that would make it go pretty good and still be technically original :)
