Duke got revenge on undefeated UNLV en route to first ever national championship.
Defending national champion UNLV entered the game on a 45-game winning streak. Led by All Americans Larry Johnson and Stacey Augmon and excellent backcout of Greg Anthony and Anderson Hunt, they were looking to become the first Division I undefeated national champion since Indiana in 1976.
Duke was led by center Christian Laettner and PG Bobby Hurley. Freshman Grant Hill also played big role.

What a game. It felt like Duke outplayed them in the first half yet UNLV led.

UNLV was on a 45-game winning streak going into this game. And you have to wonder if UNLV believed they could crush Duke again like they did the year before. The morning of this game, the Rebels went to a High School gymnasium for a shoot-around. Tark the Shark had a half-concerned, half-pissed look. Ross Porter, who called games for UNLV from 1978-'93, remembers that "at the end of the shoot-around, Jerry told the players 'you guys are going to lose tonight because you're not focused enough on this game.'" Duke, in contrast, came in with no pressure. And they had a Freshman who was turning heads around the game in Grant Hill. It was visible from the tip-off that Duke was a more focused team, and it showed all the way.

That shoot around by UNLV you mentioned is the same way Duke was acting that Sunday between Final Four Saturday and National Championship Monday. They thought beating UNLV was the National Championship even though it was only the Semis. Coach K had to light into them in the middle of that Sunday practice that he had to excuse himself from the practice. Upon returning, the players apologized to him and they had the greatest practice ever. Obviously, you know they won it all the next night.

@@jayzee7538 In the Year in Sports 1991 video, Coach K's biggest concern/challenge was what would happen if they beat UNLV. Based on what you said, it's probably accurate. The Jayhawks never had a chance.

Duke going nuts after winning this game. I remember reading next day after the game they were all acting cocky and unfocused heading to practice and even started practice unfocused. Coach K didn't like what he saw that he ripped into them big time and stormed off the court. After cooling off some, Coach K returned and saw a different team. The Players apologized to him and from that moment on they had maybe the best practice in NCAA Basketball History and then beat Kansas for the National Championship the next night.

that unlv team was like mike tyson. you didnt think anyone could beat them because they were that dominant. all it takes is 1 game or 1 boxing match to lose. howevver. if this were nba style, i dont think duke beats unlv 4 games in a 7 game series

Great game. But the Talking Heads love 20:15 to point to these teams as super teams. I find them highly overrated. Although I think Uconn might’ve only beaten them both by 12.

I still say something was strange in this one.. point shaving????lol... UNLV was the best team not just that year but quite possibly the best college team of all time... they could have beat some pro teams with that squad. Most were 5th or 6th year seniors.. not uncommon today..but unheard of back in 1991...lol... If you could put that UNLV squad up against any ..even the unconn squad that just won back to back championships... they would cruise through them.. unconn likes to run... shhhhhhiiitttt... UNLV invented running.. thats all they did.. up and down basketball...they were grown as men playing against kids...lol..somebody got rich that night...lol

Goes to show you know nothing about how gambling works. 😂 The vast majority of money is made on the spread, not on who wins. It's a hell of a lot easier that way because in order for the outcome itself to be fixed Duke, UNLV, and the refs all would have needed to be in on it.
