My grandmother had this car in 90. Bought it new, and she absolutely loved it. She still talked about it 20 years after. I have fond memories of it as a young child, and always loved the futuristic (for the time) interior with all those buttons. Ha. Sadly, Sterling support was lackluster, and it started having the usual Rover “Gremlins” of the era. Engine ran great, but the rest of the car…….. Only Rover could make a Honda notoriously unreliable. I think it would’ve been a fantastically reliable vehicle if they had left one word out of that vehicle: Lucas. 😂

An underrated car that didn’t get the respect it deserved. I’d gladly own this.

No clue what US versions of the Rover 800 are like but my father owned one for a short while here in the UK. They seemed to be one of those cars that you either loved or hated (partly due to questionable build quality on some models). Personally I love these cars and now 30, almost 40 years on even here in the UK they are rare to come across. I wouldn't be surprised if there are only a handful left in the US.

The 827 Si had a very handsome design. I had no idea these were based on a Honda when I was a kid and thought they were an alternative to Jaguar or BMW (ok they kinda were I guess).

This is 1990, as evidenced by the “Motorweek ‘90” at the end. Aired sometime between Sept 89 - Sept 90. Sterling made a really boneheaded decision with this car that’s not often talked about. On the Acura Legend, a driver airbag was standard starting with 1989 models and optional in 1987-1988. Yet the Sterling, despite being much the same design and made from 1987-1991, never had an airbag. Seriously, why couldn’t they just use the Legend’s airbag system? Was it really that important to have that steering wheel design (which doesn’t even look as good as the Legend’s airbag wheel)? There was no excuse for the ‘89-91 Sterling to not have an airbag. The lack of an airbag probably cost the Sterling quite a few sales. November 9, 2023 6:08 am

These cars were assembled very poorly. Many had a long list of quality issues, and many were never really worked out. They lost a lot of value as time went on.

The early cars had issues, and they did get them sorted. Models after 1990 were far better built and much more reliable. Unfortunately the damage to their reputation was already done. The quality actually improved enough that Rover/Sterling actually started building extra cars for Honda in their factory.

What’s the difference between this and the Acura? Just the fake wood trim? New lights? Pretty weak! They didn’t even change the shape of the steering wheel!!

It was real wood on the Sterling hand finished too, Rover were good at the wood and leather on top spec models.

For one thing, the reliability. Leave it to the British to ruin even a Japanese design. If the build quality and the reliability was even a quarter of the Legend's, Acura would have good reason to be concerned> But it wasn't, so they didn't.

@@cubdukat engine, electrical system was all honda until rover changed the honda engine for their own KV6 engines. You was better off buying the 820 vitesse turbo ( don't think that made it across the pond) as they were very reliable.

@@cubdukatRover did all the suspension/chassis work so that bit wasn't all that Japanese, even on the Legend. It used Honda engines and transmissions. The problem is the Sterling was put into production too soon and the factory wasn't ready. Early cars used a mess of electrical parts and pieces from Honda and ancient SD1. After 1990 the issues were pretty much gone. However the damage to the cars reputation was unfortunately already done.
