1993 Las Vegas Riviera. Semi 1- Archer vs Strickland; Semi 2- Reyes vs Potier (Canada) @35:20; Exciting final - ARCHER vs REYES @1:19:16 Amazing 9-ball throughout. Perfect commentary and position tele-strating by Mike SIGEL. Plenty of shotmaking that amazes even SIGEL. (Sorry about my fuzzy low-budget VHS taping.) And be sure to also watch THIS amazing Efren Reyes match: • *Magical* EFREN REYES ...

hey LY , I know sigel is great but have you watched him in his 200k match with EFREN , SIGEL was like a wiggling squirming little girl who was actually afraid to shoot a ball , then all he did was cuss and complain after that I lost a lot of respect for sigel

Thanks for the kind words of appreciation, Mac for my pool classics preservation/archiving efforts. Makes it all worthwhile. And I still hear from many of the featured pros who like myself, are in a "more advanced state of youth" with words to the effect of: "Was I ever really that young, and playing so beautifully?" *I love it* .

I worked Johnny at his poolroom in Marietta. He and Kim Davenport ran the place . Shawn Putnam was our house player . There were pros in there all the time . I saw some great players during those huge tournaments.

Chris: You'll greatly enjoy reading this: forums.azbilliards.com/threads/archers-place-marietta-ga.527462/ It's a thread from AZBilliards (the largest billiards forum on the Internet) and it's all about Archer's various Marietta pool venues over the years. The fizzling Archer-Davenport relationship factors into many of the 276 posts within the highly interesting thread.

@@raycarltonbilliards5798 well I was actually really close friends with Johnny and Kim both . I play myself so we would spar all the time . I was Johnnys kitchen manager and helped out doing different things at the tournaments. Kim and John definitely had some major difficulties in seeing eye to eye on things . It was a madhouse most of the time . Just filled with childish drama .

Archer had a serious laps of concentration at 18:00 and 19:46 where he doesn't just miss the shot, he misses them by a substantial amount. You'd expect to see an intermediate player miss them by as much as Archer misses them. Having said that he played brilliantly other than those two shots and anytime you are victorious over the Pearl you know you played very well.

Agree completely; he certainly is one of the best pool commentators ever, because of his deep knowledge of all pool games and his instantaneous tele-strating skills. No one's faster or more accurate at predictive tele-strating. Buddy Hall is/was nearly his equal, though much less so in the case of instantly perceiving Straight Pool (14.1) problem balls, patterns, and navigation routes.

For many Americans and Canadians in that time period (and even now) it was more reflexive to see, hear, and pronounce, the word "Efren" as Ephram because of the multi-season, hugely popular FBI TV series starring the oddly-named Ephram Zimbalist. In any country, sound-alike prenoms and even surnames are routinely and erroneously conflated even by highly literate folks. Can happen with any language.

40:10 Reyes does something I've not seen before. At the end of his stroke on a long hard shot which he missed, he lets his cue slide forward through his fingers on his final stroke. I've seen some PBIA instructors discussing the proper grip. I have always advocated for letting the cue rest naturally, cradled in the hand without gripping it. Reyes is probably the greatest pool player of my time and I leave it to you to decide what kind of "grip" he is using.

All pros -- even world champions -- have "hack-like" performances now and then. They're not machines (except perhaps Mosconi, who was indeed a "ball-pocketing *machine*" (a common honorific routinely bestowed on him). Bad performances by top-level people happen in all sports and amongst entertainment artists. Again, they're not machines.

Sigel and Hopkins routinely mispronounced Efren's name when commentating and in casual conversation. Producers gave up correcting them thru their headsets and just let it ride. I guess we all mispronounce something at times.

*Always?* You know better than that, Charlie. In his *prime years* the higher the prize money, the more certain Efren wins -- notably in special productions like the 2005 IPT Reyes-Sigel $200,000 *win* ; the 2006 IPT Reyes-Morris $500,000 *win* ; the Reyes-Strickland $100,000 Color of Money *win* The fact that shady promoters didn't always pay him the full amount doesn't negate the victories.

I dunno if anyone was more dominant than Johnny in the 90s but that is just 9 ball. Same goes for svb in this decade. Efren is right there with but nobody and i mean nobody that has ever walked the earth is as good as efren in 1 pocket or 15 ball rotation. Course i cant believe i can say this now but john schmidt? Might be the best to ever play straight pool. That record he broke i thought would never be broke. Ever! That to me might be tbe greatest achievement in the history of the game.
