1994-1997 Narrow Gauge Country: The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, K-27, K-36, K-37 2-8-2 Mikado!
The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad operated narrow gauge steam-powered passenger trains over the former Denver & Rio Grande Western San Juan Extension. Mikado-class 2-8-2 K-36 and K-37 coal-fired steam locomotives traversed this treacherous mountain railroad on 3-foot gauge track between Chama, New Mexico, and Antonito, Colorado, via Cumbres Pass. In 1994, "Mudhen" K-27 no. 463 had been restored and was making appearances on both passenger and "photo freight" trains. Freight trains were made up of historic freight cars, restored to operating condition by the Friends of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. Magnificent New Mexico and Colorado Mountain scenery top off this must-see video for those who enjoy historic narrow gauge trains still operating at the end of the 20th century.
